It Was Always About Controlling Women

Thankfully she’s escaped from Howdy Arabia and is now getting the care she needs, but I doubt she’ll be able to set foot there again in the near future.

And what’s happening here will happen all across America if you ever let the GQP win again, because they *will* ban it nationally. States Rights was always a Lie.

And you’ll have US AG Ken Paxton under Donald Trump or whoever, chasing people down in New England and California.

You have been fucking warned.

Well, if you allow one woman safe medical care, then you have to provide it for ALL of the women. It's a slippery slope./s

Ugh. It should be no ones business what she does or decides, between her and her doctor only. Eff those who think otherwise.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Basically no doctor will perform an abortion in any case when the supreme court of that state refuses to provide any assurance they won't go to prison. Doctors are absolutely not going to risk not only permanent professional and financial harm, but actual PRISON, for their patients (and shouldn't have to). So many OBs will leave.

I think all women of childbearing years should get the hell out of Texas!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I hate that we know her name. She should’ve been able to try to handle all of this anonymously. There’s no reason she had to be outed publicly while going through such a horrible situation. Not to mention all of the hate that she’ll have to deal with from the pro-life crowd now.

2 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

This baby was wanted. The fetus will not live. She and presumably her partner want to preserve her fertility by doing this abortion so they can try again. She is not some evil baby-killer. This demonstrates that anti-choicers' arguments are in bad faith. It is absolutely not about protecting babies. There is no baby to protect here. It is about controlling women, and hurting their existing kids, other family who depend on them. Any society that lowers women hurts everybody. Sad times we live in.

It's fucking horrifying reading the full opinion because they blatantly lie within it - the opinion seems almost in favour of Cox as it says that if her pregnancy is life-threatening she is entitled to an abortion and all she needs is a medical professional to attest to that. The fucked thing is that not only does it offer zero protection to the doctor making that diagnosis, they also flat-out say her doctor didn't call it life-threatening when she literally used those words in court.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, its a very negative opinion because it protects the main point of the law which is to intimidate patients and providers. It also requests that the Texas Medical Board, appointed by the governor, define medical necessity. Its good that the law was challenged at least but not a good result beyond the attention its getting.

Exactly. It was just cover. And a game to them.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was a motte-and-baily argument (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motte-and-bailey_fallacy): They wanted to ban abortion, but whenever challenged they could retreat to the safe haven of "reasonable exceptions".

Stay away from America. Got it.

Since the pregnancy is life-threatening, would it be self defense if she shot anybody trying to stop her from leaving Texas for an abortion?

The City of Houston just had municipal elections and of the 4 At Large City Council seats, Conservatives won all 4. Houston is a Blue city, but Conservatives got out the vote and progressives did not. Please, please, do not let this happen in your community! Vote Blue in every election in every jurisdiction until we can change the power at every level and vote the MFers out!

Why would she get an exception? She's not the knocked up mistress of one of our family-values Christian pols.

Thing is, if she goes back and is obviously not pregnant, doesn't she run the risk of arrest and/or imprisonment? There really is no 'win' in this situation in that case. The Lone Star state is lost to the Confederacy. Time to pull out all Federal funding and support and let them sink or swim by their own bootstraps. PS: Mexico can take the land back. There isn't anything useful there.

Texas, what a garbage state.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Good. Voters there need to learn who they elected. If she won the case, some Texans might have thought the existing law was 'reasonable'

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And yet, nothing will change. People who think the law should be repealed will still vote for Abbott in the next election just because he's in the "correct" party.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Once again: Texas is gerrymandered to shit, and this has caused low voter turnout. And I know what you mean by "they need to learn" but no one deserves this dangerous imposition - not even repubs whose emotions have been manipulated into supporting the policy. They are being told by powerful ppl that babies are being murdered, and anyone who questions that is admonished for being a baby killer. So how does one incite change and rationality against such strong gut reactions? Asking for a friend

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was never worried about her. She was picked the same way Rosa Parks was chosen. She was the perfect face for why abortion should be accessible. As soon as she was at serious risk, she was going to be flown to a friendly state.

As for change, it happens. Just never fast enough. Look at Kansas, their last election was pretty shocking.

Change comes, you just have to keep pushing for it regardless of the setbacks

This would conflict with the US Congress' enumerated powers to regulate foreign & interstate commerce under Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 of the US Constitution. "The Congress shall have Power"... "To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes". https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Constitution_of_the_United_States_of_America#Section_8

I’m scared. Biden is very beatable.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 13

If T**** skates through the indictments (he's old, white, and rich, so...) then we have a very serious problem in 2024. Fingers securely crossed that he doesn't, because the next runner-up is Ron DeMeatball, and it's looking pretty grim for him. Biden needs to have a flawless 2024 and the entire support of the Democratic party and rational voters, otherwise America's slide into fascism will become a plummet.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Biden is a problem...especially since he and the Democratic establishment seem wedded to the war crimes in the Middle East. The only hope is that the GOP keeps demonstrating that they're orders of magnitude worse. It's still a shitty situation all around.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 17

The Biden admin has done a decent job of balancing Israel's right to self-defense and stressing the need for aid to Palestinians. The problem is that alot of ppl (like you perhaps?) seem to put their heads in the sand and blame Israel for everything that's wrong over there. (Reality is this: both sides have intransigent radical factions that keep perpetuating the conflict, and neither side's decent people are willing to rise up and truly stop them).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

A lot of people like me are unwilling to absolve Israel of their responsibility to not murder tens of thousands of Palestinians. They have literally all the power in this situation, and because they have the unwavering support of one of the most powerful countries in the world, they're perfectly happy perpetuating the violence. The US vetoing the calls for ceasefire was unacceptable. It *will* be a stain on Biden's legacy, and neither the US nor Israel have anyone to blame but themselves.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then the US should do what every other UN country did and push for a ceasefire. The stated reason for not doing so is that it "plants the seeds for the next war", which is horrible rationale for the continued genocide that is happening. Biden has done well with his presidency thus far, but getting involved at all in this conflict as the US has, will lose him votes. The criticism here is quite justified.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Everyone always underestimates him

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

God I hope so.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There’s another poll out that has him beating Trump by 4 in all the swing states. And that’s not the first, but the media don’t report this. And these polls are highly flawed; they basically only talk to people who still use landlines. And if those silly old bastards are that split then Trump’s in serious trouble. Basically Biden can totally win *if* people ignore the bullshit and actually put the effort in.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good, we should continue to do that. We should continue to remind everyone that if they don’t get out and vote for him personally, he will lose by one vote.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Everyone also underestimated Trump in 2016. All it took was a shitload of lies to get him in office. What do you think will happen if Biden shows any sign of weakness just days before the election? There are way too many voters out there who still don‘t understand that the 2024 vote decides if they live in a democracy or in a dictatorship. VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

That hit home hard... the Texas Supreme Court is a death panel. The only thing that saved this woman is she can leave the state, but what if she couldn't? Death sentence by another name.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

They're doing their best to prevent people from leaving the state like her. Many red states have been trying to pass laws that would allow them to prosecute their citizens for procedures they had done in other states. It's fucking sickening.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I’d tend to say it was somewhere during W’s presidency.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We already reached it and are fast approaching the point of no return for saving our current system... We have to unify, there are just too many directions and distractions to form a united front to provide moral and social support to resistance against this. Who knows though.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Taking physical action is a big step and is unlikely without a "person in power" to morally and protectively allow for for the move into violence. Socially regressive sides of the arguments have always had this as their platform is built on the inate idea that they are more valuable than the group they are attacking.
The left needs this and the entire purpose of the right media machine is to slow this formation down and confuse and separate us.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And all because they are too sca'wad to speak up against a senile old reality host.

Some people will die for their country's fight against tyranny. Republicans won't even speak up against it.

Old-school Republicans? Sure, they're afraid to speak out against him, because he's weaponized his supporters against them. The few who have ever said something unflattering about him have been bullied in line or left the party. MAGA Republicans, though? Scared? They LOVE him! Dallas, here. I came to this state for the Army back in 2017, and I've been stuck ever since. I'm HOPING we get out this next fucking year, first half of the year. I have a real shot of getting my family out via promotion, it's just terrifying. Just need a spot to open up and the right people to want me. (Not in the Army anymore, so moving doesn't come quite as regularly)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the thing. It's so diverse here in Houston. Same with Austin and San Antonio. It's the politics that's making things worse. With Gerrymandering, it's allowed so many to transform this state into Y'all Qaeda.

Same up here in Dallas. The CITY feels great, on a micro level. I'm terrified of the state government, not particularly my immediate surroundings. Especially as a fuckin queer woman.
