I have health issues. I was sole/primary caregiver for my husband for 5 years after his cancer diagnosis. You betcha I wear masks. I wear masks because I have asthma and pollen gives me problems. I wear masks because I’m not the only human on the planet.
I’d like to thank all the GQP folks for following the words of their Christ for caring for the sick and poor and widows and following the example of the Good Samaritan. No wonder you want bibles in every hotel room. Talk about identity politics—I get so tired of loudly-self-identified so-called Christians—not a one of them are worth their weight in stale spit.

Aside from the fact that this law shouldn't exist at all, a year in jail for wearing a fucking mask is insane.
Filanwizard
this county is on Long Island which from my understanding has a lot of retired NYC cops and is very trumpy.
modis
Congrats. You’ve just set a precedent for allowing the government to mandate or ban ANY article of clothing.
Imagine being so scared by unfounded conspiracy theories that you ban medical devices designed to protect your voting demographic.
admiralawesome4213
I live near Nassau. I can promise you that this won't hold water in the long run for multiple reasons, and the second it makes it's way into the health industry and they start asking for clarifications, more info, alternatives, etc. or the rest of the county realizes and groups together to sue/remove them from office those politicians are going to change their tune real fast.
LuminoZero
SO glad I moved out of Nassau County.
For those who don't know, this is Long Island, NY. Roughly 30 mins to an hour outside of NYC. There are Republican fascists EVERYWHERE. Nowhere is safe.
copperdomebodhi
Alt-righters mask up when they want a riot. So does Antifa when they're there to punch back. Can you guess who's going to get their first-amendment rights violated?
Stefnos
easy way to fix... next time one of those "law makers" needs surgery.... no masks

Cancer patients can just get fucked I guess? along with people with compromised immune systems and so on.
capnadorable
I was disabled by Covid 3 years ago, in all the support groups for long COVID sufferers we get posts almost everyday from new people being disabled, it’s disabled millions of people and is continuing to do so. Watching society while knowing what I know is absolutely insane. Many people are getting disabled and don’t even realize covid had anything to do with it since most people don’t even test anymore. You can’t know Covid disabled you if you don’t know you even had covid.
redsmerf
I first read that as "Musk ban". Imagine my disappointment when I realized what it actually said
Wirefish
Yeah, sorry about that. I wish, too.
RockKickass
I’ll never understand why they care so much about other people wearing mask…..or being gay, Jewish, black…
Wirefish
Being other than white males, really.
OriginalAndWitty
Wait, so surgeons can't wear masks now? Just sneeze all up in your open heart surgery? Cancer patients can never leave their homes? People doing jobs around hazardous materials just have to suck it up? Time for the feds to come in and 'nope' that shit.
fr0stbyte124
Keep up that kind of talk and you'll lose your hand washing privileges.

So the next time a klan rally marches up or n@zis, they can arrest them FINALLY?
backrideup9
No, no, not like that.
Corrodias
Oh, you silly goose. As if.
RoYoMi
While would they arrest themselves?
FireSolvesProblems
Those are hoods not masks, totally different.
Kinkyboinick
but, like Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus being in the same place at the same time, it would be hard for the police to arrest them....

Is this what "small government" and "freedom" look like?
glocksout
Small government means using the violence of the state to enforce dress codes
dingo8yrbaby
"Small government" and freedom for themselves (no taxes, no regulations) but "Big government" for the rest of us to regulate what we do with our bodies and our lives.
katolu
Next time the Proud Boys et al. are in town, we'll see if that mask prohibition stands.
Perkunas687
They limit it in this way, but a cop can still amble up to you and harass you about your health.
glocksout
I mean this should ban Nazis but we’ve already got case law saying that’s protected speech

So... 50% or more of the Jan 6 "demonstrators"? Every accusation is an admission with this lot.

https://nypost.com/2024/08/06/us-news/nassau-county-approves-mask-ban-after-fiery-public-hearing/
"The legislation bans anyone over 16 from wearing masks or other face coverings on public streets and property, except for health and safety reasons or religious customs."
"Police will be the ones to decide if a mask is being worn for a legitimate purpose — something the bill’s adversaries warn may lead to discrimination against minorities."
Beards and sunglasses risky in Nassau if bill signed?
Ranb40
There is nothing on the Nassau County website for this bill yet. https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/581/Laws-Regulations-Codes

I'm sure this will be challenged in court pretty quickly. Most of the time, I'm literally the only one wearing masks in enclosed spaces nowadays around where I live. I do it because I am immunosuppressed and take care of someone who is unable to be vaccinated due to a type of blood cancer.

I’m 46 and have cancer. I will not abide nor will others telling me to take OFF a mask. You fucks couldn’t keep one ON.

What about workers wearing dust masks? Just breath out to stop from getting pneumoconiosis?
FallingStar7669
It's way easier than that; a law like this is unconstitutional: the First Amendment should allow masks.
dbbbbs
Goo question. And what about Halloween?
JustSomeDudeInMichigan
I broke out in shingles on my face I wore a mask to hide it cause it didn’t look great. This is probably the dumbest law ever
sellingmysoulforupvotes
This doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of holding up in court
iamgnat
You sure you want to take that bet the way the courts are currently stacked? This SCOTUS has been so off the wall with how it rules that I think trying to predict any ruling that falls in there lap is just plain guess work.
JadeNB1729
(1) It'll still do a lot of damage to people who don't want to have to fight a court case just to wear a mask, and (2) I wouldn't take it for granted that US courts will make any sensible decisions.
PrincessLeliana
Why would you ban them and not just mandate that you don't HAVE to wear them? Also it says that you can wear em with a medical condition
RecurringNightmare
remember all those "it should be a choice" people? it wasnt about not being forced to do the right thing so they could do the right thing voluntarily, it was about not doing the right thing, which was already obvious back then, but they also dont want others to do the right thing because that makes them look bad...its about normalizing the bad and wrong things...and demonizing the good and right things...
sadurdaynight
B/c the goal is to be able to arrest anyone they want. The way you help a minority class gain majority rule is by finding ways to incarcerate those you don't like, and turn them into 2nd class citizens with criminal records and no voting power. Masks are a first step. It sets a precedent that the gov't can "regulate" that kind of stuff. Pretty soon they're start passing laws for other petty stuff. They want to flood the zone with laws, so people don't know when they're breaking one.
jayman0123
cut out the white portion and carry it in your pocket/purse/wallet. if you see a pig waddling up just be prepared. it's formatted to print out on a 8.5x11" paper and be the size of a business card

It's police discretion whether your medical condition is convincing enough. That should tell you a lot about their motivations with this.
ImgurIsOutOfUsernames
That's not how the system works.Granted, this whole thing is stupid, but what will happen is you will get the citation and then you'll go to court to present any extenuating evidence, at which point the *judge* will decide to throw out the ticket or not. It won't be the officer's decision. Again, I'm not saying this isn't insanely stupid, I'm just saying that showing "proof" to a cop isn't how it's going to work.
delecti
The police don't decide whether you get *punished*, but it gives them discretion to ruin your day. They already have enough of that kind of power, laws like this which give them more are bad.
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
The exception only means you have to carry medical documents with you (which should remain between you, your physician and your health insurance) and cops will decide ad hoc if they believe your attestation is legitimate and your condition sufficiently bad or if they'd rather fine you $1,000 and/or throw you in jail after roughing you up. Based on factors like your complexion and presumed political alignment.
Mmbear
So the first time a cop asks for your medical paperwork without a warrant its a federal crime. Im sure all the legal battles to come wont be expensive at all. And for what? To appease some anti vaxxers who are probably going to die of a communicable disease before their next reelection.
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
In other words, it's the usual eugenics shit. Make it a violation or crime to do something harmless and victimless, like loitering or growing certain plants or having a panic attack while being bullied by cops ("resisting arrest"), and selectively enforce it in minority communities in order to financially ruin them with fines, or imrpison them & deprive them of their voting rights, or try to escalate the encounter until there is a flimsy excuse to shoot the "suspect" right there in the streets.
BobAllen2004
Because to the right, government is not about allowing freedom of choice, it's about control.
Wirefish
Any law that is vague on the exceptions means the exceptions don’t matter. “You can have an abortion if the mother’s life is in danger” effectively means “once her systems are shutting down and she’s in sepsis, we’ll consider it”. How about caregivers? Can they wear masks to protect the people they’re caring for? What about all the jerks who just read “masks are illegal” and attack people with “valid medical reasons”? NO. Masks are health care!!
Nikolai5
The far-right believe in the elimination of disabled people, not just minorities.
AnonOmis1000
Does it exclude Halloween masks? How about dust masks for construction workers and carpenters? Respirators for painters? Welding masks? Mascara?!?
jayman0123
it does. the ban is on anyone over age 16 or "This law shall not apply to facial coverings worn to protect the health or safety of the wearer, for religious or cultural purposes, or for the peaceful celebration of a holiday or similar religious or cultural event for which masks or facial coverings are customarily worn." - https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/3192?fileID=247451
Hercules99
Why make a crime?? That's a bit much. Why wouldn't they want someone wearing an n95? Who is it hurting?
NekoMiko06
The assumption is that if you’re hiding your face then you’re up to no good (the fuck happened to our fundamental right to privacy?).
houghten
Because if something is a crime, the police have a paper-thin excuse to shoot people over it. Even if the penalty is usually a fine. And, as always, disproportionately applied to black and brown people.

He could have had a mask in his pocket. I had to shoot him!

DarkZalgo
Nah, half decent facial recognition can tell who you are with or without a mask.
stercusmoriturussum
I had in my memory that current commercial facial recognition in real life conditions only gets ~90% recognition rate on a good day - and that's without masks and if the ethnicity of the person to be recognized matches the training data.
DarkZalgo
I work for a time & attendance company that sells a time clock with facial recognition that uses like 6-7 year old hardware/technology. With a single picture taken for enrollment it can easily recognize me with or without a mask even if I'm not directly facing the camera so long as I'm within like 8-10 ft.
tinyCabbage
Here you go, talking about things you know nothing about again. So it's infrastructure engineer, doctor, cybersecurity expert, psychiatrist, mechanic, facial recognition expert now?
silhouettegundam
Masks do almost nothing. This engine's tests >99.9% accuracy with a mask. I interpret that to mean compared against non-masked hits and not accuracy in general

Only ignorant Americans believe the nonsense about the greatest, free-est etc. ALL other comparable countries have better living conditions, health care, life expectancy, crime rates, freedom of worship, freedom of lifestyle, vacations, minimum wages... A land of myth, oppression and violence.

there were a few weeks in mid 2001 around when Shrek 1 released that were pretty great. Other than that it's been various levels of awful.

There have been times in Americas past where we have chosen better representation
Times in my childhood where fascism was decidedly uncool
I’m hoping those times come back again
I’m hoping I can help create the America I always dreamed of because the current situation isn’t fucking cool & I don’t want to leave things like this for my loved ones.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I would argue that even in those best of times, with the best leaders, huge segments of our population have been tormented and has their dignity stripped because they weren't the right race, religion, gender, gender identity, or were just too unlucky to have been born in the right place.
smorsdoeuvres
I would have to agree with you 100%
Hopefully we can find ways to make some of this nonsense better for everyone- especially those that have been so systematically overlooked & abused
