Now I can get a 5 meter reel with a controller and power supply delivered next day from Amazon for around $15-$20. I've been working at the cutting edge of LED lighting for over 20 years. The prices keep plummeting even for pro stage gear and the quality just keeps getting better. This tech will be available at the consumer level for cheap in a few years.

if it can be made small enough and high resolution enough, Cosplay will mix it with clear acrylic to mimic things like the holographics used in scifi props.
The effect is nowhere near as convincing with two lenses (your eyes) that aren't motion-tracked. For now, the closest you can get to this is with an AR headset, but all of the available ones suffer from only filling a tiny part of your field of view. VR is best for the wow effect (and there are some great underwater, flying and space applications and games), but headsets are inconvenient and the novelty wears off quickly.
Surprisingly, from the other link, the bigger sheets are WAY lower than that: 59.5" x 118.5" @ $495 = 3.6 cents/square inch! Or $5.60/sq ft! Assuming I didn't screw up, that's in the same ballpark as the cheapest wall tiles. I'm sure, installed, it'd be a TON more, but that's still kinda "wow".
I'm astonished it's so affordable. I'm sure there's some hidden cost (expensive protective sheeting in front of it?) Pricy electronics? Still, if I ever want to redecorate some wall of my house, I'll definitely look into it!
Star Trek had a dedicated room that was used for nothing else for this, if you mean the Holodeck. There were most certainly not screens lining every wall of everyone's cabin.
Ray Bradbury wrote a short story called "The Veldt". It's about a techno playroom with full screen walls that these parents install for their kids. The playroom is EXTREMELY immersive and the parents somewhat neglectful of the kids. The kids get obsessed with this "serengeti" mode (what the Boers called "the Veldt") with realistic animals including predators and prey etc. The last scene is someone wondering where the parents are and the kids are just idly playing in the room in Veldt mode.../1
I mean id argue it depends on what the LED walls are showing, The stuff in these videos is going all in for the same reason gaming computers at trade shows run full unicorn diarrhea, It catches the eye. I suspect companies like Corsair know most people lock into a static color in the case of PC lighting.
