To be fair, I've known the rack to strip on manual windows... and they were often easier to force down from outside. Typical problem with old electrics though was the wiring cracking up in the door hinge area, you could splice them... that and the lube getting washed out of the works by perished window wiper seals. Anyway, both types have problems and need sorting out after a decade or so hard use.

Don't worry, when power windows came out on low end vehicles they, too, also broke all the time. I had a driver's side window on my Saturn that worked fine going down but would only go back up about a quarter of the way. I'd have to open the door and get my palms on both sides of the glass and manually raise it to get it shut again.

My grand niece was trying to get me to roll down the car window so she could tell me something after I dropped her off at her house and she was doing a pushing motion and I had no idea what she was indicating. Then she looked exasperated and started doing a rolling motion and I immediately put the window down. Lol I'm old.

The new slate EV truck which is supposed to be the cheapest EV on the US market has them, there is no factory option for electric windows.

You will be able to buy a module and add power windows after the fact, however. That's kind of the whole philosophy behind the truck. Everything is a la carte. Add what you want, when you want.

Slate builds 1 truck at the factory line, which massively simplifies production and makes it much cheaper. If you choose to upgrade in the future, it will cost more than if you got it built that way, but you can get a $25k EV truck!!
Besides, on a small 2 door truck with a/c, crank Windows aren't even a big deal. Easily reach both to operate

I remember my cousin's old car had these. I went with her and my other cousin to the store or something. Apparently she had child locks on the rear passenger doors for her kid. We got to our destination, they got and left me in the car and I was trying to call them because they left me in the car. I noticed it was a roll down, so I rolled the window down, opened the car from the outside, rolled the window back up and locked the door and ran to my cousins. This was a few years ago too.

Let me tell you about my friend's brand new '86 Chevy Cavalier where ALL of the crank windows broke within the first year... lol... not JUST the lift mechanism, the crank handle stripped out on two and the knob fell off another... of course none of that was the worst thing about the car, but it was pretty memorable being trapped in that car with three windows that wouldn't roll down and a halfassed dead/dysfunctional AC in humid 98°F weather on the dead standstill BQE... ***memories***

I asked and she said "I can't find the button". I explained the crank, and that's it's called 'rolling it down'. A few years later when she got her first cell phone, I went to our attic and pulled out an old rotary phone and explained that's where the icon comes from, and made sure to teach her that's why it's called 'dialing a number'

I remember the liquor company I worked for using Mead Rental trucks in NYC in the 80s... the windows were all cranks... which was almost a moot point as the windows would either not roll down or not roll back up... still not as bad as the passenger door opening up by itself on a turn ( yes I almost fell out) and I spent the rest of the day with it wired shut with a coat hanger.

Cranks only work well when they can be easily reached. My MGB was fine with cranks since I could reach the passenger side with no problem, but every other car I've driven really needed power windows.

I had bought my wife a Mercedes GL450 and when she passed away I sold it and bought that. I don't miss all the computers. This has most of the technology of a new car without all the computers. Automatic dimming high beams automatic wipers power locks and windows and temperature sensitive climate control even cruise control. The nice thing is everything is something someone can work on without a computer.

While it's rare, you can strip the splines on the regulator and then it's a bitch. Like if the previous owner broke the crank and used channel locks instead...

That works as long as you set the clamping strength on the vice grips correctly otherwise it strips the splines even faster. We had a fleet truck roll into the shop at one point where the regular splines were just a straight tube due to the vice grips slipping. It was a trick where they just gave us the title to the truck instead of paying the bill.

Ya, that reminds me, I once changed the power window motor in a Volvo, it would then roll down about 6-7 cm then back up no matter what I did. Called Volvo they said the body control module needs to be re-flashed to learn the new window motor. This was years ago, I can only imagine how bad it is now. Replace a headlight bulb? Reflash required, change the cigar lighter? Yup, reflash required…. fuckem

I think I recall the fee for the re-flash was one hour minimum charge (hook up the scan tool, connect to the web and download the flash update kind of thing) plus some other fees on top so, no it wasn't great (180.00 an hour was their shop rate)

Many cars with automagic windows have a window re-learn, so the window knows the start and end points of travel and can stop if your fingers get in there too early. Most times there is a method to do it without a bidirectional scan tool, but not always.
