Ever since starting HRT, my sound sensitivity has increased to the point where I'm genuinely distressed by very loud or repeated claps of thunder. It's mildly annoying, but also hilarious because I am *not* beating the puppy girl allegations.
Man I miss thunderstorms. Grew up in GA where they were fairly frequent, now I live in Socal, there have been like 5 in the past 20 years. The weather here sucks, sunny all the time, how boring.
My roommates dog was raised around loud noises and gunfire so he sleeps right through it. When my Dane hears thunder or fireworks she tries to get under my skin to hide
My Yorkshire Terrier was also brought up around loud noises. He used to run outside to bark at the thunder. He passed this on to his Westie sister so she now does the same.
We have some wild turkeys that frequent our yard each day. Every evening at 6:30 they fly up into the trees behind the house to sleep. Whenever there is thunder they are very vocal about their disapproval. "BOOOOM!..gobblegobblegobblegobble"
About 5 years ago my doggo started really being afraid of storms, then 2 years ago he went completely deaf. Doesnt give two shits now. He's 15, toothless, deaf, and just beginning to get cataracts , but apart from that he's still as spritely as ever.
Instead of recording the dog’s terror and laughing they should have at least tried to comfort him by talking or giving him pets. If I was there that’s what I would have done. After shoving the laughing idiots out of the way.
I hate when there is a thunderstorm. One of my dogs is hyper sensitive to sounds and will actually react to thunderstorms where I can’t even hear thenthunder yet. Once the storm hits, she is in sheer panic mode. I did not like the clips of people laughing at their pets. Those pets are terrified. Keep them close, move to a more central location in the house where it’s the quietest and just be there for them. Soothe them. Nobody likes a panic attack.
I watched the resorts cat wander around during the thunderstorms we had in Mexico. Didn't have a care in the world, but would scram if it heard you coming to say hi.
So I do have to wonder. From this video, it looks like being afraid of thunder is at least a somewhat intuitive reaction for animals. So with that being the case, when did humans stop being as concerned about?
Our memory is better than most animals, so after a few storms we realize it's just noise and we go about our business. It also helps that we have sturdy structures to hide in, and other amenities that keep us busy.
I for one would be DEEPLY concerned if I were outside. That shit is scary!
Inside I think it's just being able to reason, and maybe age/exposure. My ex-feral cats don't give a fuck about thunder or fireworks, probs b/c they've been exposed when living outside for so long (they're indoor now)
Little kids are scared of it too, usually. But as you age, you realize how low the risk is, especially if you're inside when it happens. If you're outside, you should be concerned and take precautions. If it's close, make sure you aren't the tallest thing around, lie on the ground if you have to. And stay away from tall things.

I think most people still react with a startle when there is a loud, unexpected boom. Children certainly are afraid of thunder. But we have basically a lifetime of experience that says "thunder isn't really a problem" so we've learned to taper that reaction. People who are outside when lightning strikes nearby tend to react pretty much exactly like these animals.. "oh shit, find cover!"
It's just like the guy said - we experience it and remember that experience, over and over. Fear toward a loud noise is natural. Humans can rationalize, loud noise + rainy conditions + flash of light = thunder = not a direct threat. Some people's pathways are stronger than others. But that's essentially what takes place. Animals don't have the vocabulary necessary, but habituation can take place and they can grow accustomed. For more, look up habituation in crows towards cars.
I don't think it's thunder. i think it's "OH FUCK LOUD NOISE!!"
We (think we can) identify it as thunder and know we're in a safe building. Animals probably aren't always sure if it's something about to fall on them, or a predator, etc etc.
But animals can do this to a point too. My dog doesn't react to thunder at all.
