The worst thing, perhaps, is that a lot of them aren't even motivated by some kind of malice or hate. They're motivated by "When he's gone, the things being dragged in his wake might slow down, or snarl up completely." They don't give a damn about him, just stopping what he helped set in motion with the hopefully once in several lifetimes unique combinations that let him break past so many so-called hard limits.
