This was deliberate, like New Coke in the eighties. Toblerone did this to get old product off she shelves. When they "reverted" to the original spacing they cheapend the chocolate, but you couldn't directly compare to the old bars.

The people making Chunky soup are doing it aswell. They've gone from a short fat can that holds a certain amount to a tall thin can that holds 20ml less (if memory serves). All in an attempt to sell more while giving less.

A couple weeks ago, I bought a store version of the Chunky Chicken and Dumplings soup. I've bought it for years - same stores, same brand - and it's usually pretty good for the price. This last one had TWO dumplings in the whole fucking can. And it's not like they were replaced with extra chicken or veg. I'm so goddamn tired of this bullshit.

Most food products are doing it, they are just doing it very slowly. Toblerone didn't get away with it because they tried it in one go. I worked in retail for a long time and got to see companies fucking everyone over, very slowly, for years.

Another sneaky thing is when they change recipes or processes for a cheaper product. It might look the same, but you're getting a worse batch every time they do it. Today in many cases we're paying more to get less food that tastes worse compared to 5, 10, 15, etc years ago. The quality gap compared to getting ingredients and cooking yourself has exploded, but it's really hard to have the energy to make all those meals!

My wife will not stop (rightfully) complaining about this. Great hair wash or skin care product with good ingredients comes out. Then a few months later the ingredient list changes, while the packaging otherwise stays the same. Cheap crappy ingredients, same price, same presentation. She's taken to buying stuff like that in bulk because she can't rely on having good products available for sale.

So I live in NYC, and up until a year or so ago, you could find 2lb bricks of cabot cheddar cheese. Now it's impossible, I can't find 2lb bricks anywhere. I swear it's a form of shrinkflation, but rather than raising the price on the 2lb brick, they just don't sell them, forcing you to buy the more expensive-per-ounce smaller bricks.

It's probably been a couple years now, but I noticed stores here in Canada stopped selling 450g (~1 LB) bars of cheese, and now they all come in 400g (~14 Oz) bars. I ... don't recall if I've ever seen a 900g brick - at least not of the grocery store brand cheeses that I typically buy.
