There are a few miniature shots in the film, if you're paying close attention. The loop at the end of the movie was done with a model. The fighter jets that show up are really fake, too. I still love Blue Thunder!

Shit forgot about the fighter jets, yeah those were practical effects I think, the loop at the end was with a massive RC model (well, massive, but like, pretty big - read something about it in a RC heli magazine once upon a time). Still a great movie :D

When I was finally able to convince my father to get an VCR back in 1984 (cable TV wasn't available in our area), Blue Thunder was one of the first movies I rented. My parents weren't movie goers so I had to wait the 2 or so years it took for a movie to make it to network television before i could see it, in edited form (networks actually did edit movies content back then). Awesome times. Sudden Impact was the first movie I rented. Go ahead, make my day!

Many scenes were made with miniatures, because the modifications made the helicopter too heavy. In the TV pilot you can see it struggle a bit to take off.

My dad used to fly a lot with helicopters as an emergency medic (as passenger) and got to know lots of pilots. He told me often that they were nearly all former "Heeresflieger" (German ground forces aviators) who were trained to go tank hunting with these small, unarmored, nimble Bo-105 (The helo you can see corkscrewing and looping in the opening of James Bond Spectre. I think some of this comes from "when sci-fi is becoming reality" or some tech is advancing. Around that time helicopters were becoming cool as a high-tech military tool compared to decades before, IIRC the US military assist/assisted in various ways with movies/TV that'll show off US gear in a good light as a PR exercise. It's a very visual thing that's easy for the audience to appreciate so does well on screen

Yeah. I'm sure it's probably still a thing, but back in the day it was a huge priority for the military to work with Hollywood to show the various military branches in a cool light. Paid off for them. Just look at Top Gun and how enrollment into flight schools and Air Force recruitment shot up after that film.

I wanted to be a pilot in HS. Secondary was computers at that time. I was the short kid in chess club and computer club. The recruiters there told me to fuck off (literally). 30+ years in computers later and no regrets.

I read up on this a while ago. From what I remember, the first seaso(maybe two) was all original, but it was so expensive that the studio had no interest in continuing it despite the popularity, so it sold it off. The people who bought it never shot any new action scenes and just coasted on existing footage as they milked what they could from the pre-existing popularity.
