I'll settle for my Italian made hiking boots. 1000 miles of walking in Spain and Italy and they hardly show wear. I'm even using the original laces but they are showing that it's time to replace them.

The thing with expensive shoes is that they come in all different sizes and widths that off the rack shoes compensate for with padding. 1/4 sizes not just 1/2. Narrow, to EEE widths. When a shoe is fitted to you it's like walking on clouds even when it's just cork and leather.

When I was in the army, I had 2 pair of boots that were the best fitting boots I ever wore. When their soles wore down, I took them to a show repair place and got new soles added. I loved it and still have those boots, 20 years later.

You can buy used high quality handmade dress shoes for $40-60 instead of disposable cheap shoes. Wear them a few years and have them resoled for $120 and get another 15 years out of them. Much less waste and employs local craftsman.

Not a lot of cobblers left around, these days. Every single one of them in my area closed up over the last 20 years. Only ones still in business do super expensive custom jobs. No cobblers for the common person anymore.

At first they are but the idea is that the natural wear of the leather actually creates the grip. Still not as grippy as modern rubber outsoles though for sure

As you saw, you can get a thin rubber tread applied to them. I did it to all of my leather soled shoes. I used to take them to a shoe shop but I did the last one myself with a rubber half sole and shoe goo. Not perfect looking, but it feels fine

The thing that pisses me off about all these "high class expensive shoes" is they have no fucking grip. Smooth as ice on the bottom. Some dumb fuck wears that shit and "slips" on a wet floor, I'm going to literally laugh at his broken tailbone. It's his own fucking fault for wearing shit shoes.

Most common reason for the upper to wear out quickly is that the shoe doesn't fit particularly well so it's getting stretched in weird places.

I like watching the process of working with leather but I would never wear any of these because of both style and lack of comfort. Honestly most of these look like they would be worn by car salesmen. imo 🤷

With one exception perhaps the vast majority of these have cushioning made of some sort of cork paste sandwiched between leather. I just don't see how that can compare to the support and materials of modern shoes. They are definitely not meant for the wild, but I would further say they aren't really meant for walking any real distance at all because city/pavement walking is actually hard on the foot.

That's true of some, but definitely not all modern shoes. I used to work for one of the main sport shoe brands and a lot went into the various tech to not only be wear resistant but light, supportive, breathable and waterproof etc

The cork paste actually takes the shape of your feet after a while when you wear them.
I basically only use leather shoes because of foot posture problems (long story), very soft inlays are bad for me, so I had to get used to it.
They actually get really comfortable after 1-2 weeks of wear.
That being said, I absolutely understand why you wouldn't want leather soles on the bottom, they're really impractical. Everything damages them, and they wear off much quicker than any other type of sole.
