There's a (literal) cult in my state masquerading as some flavor of Christianity where the members have to sign over all of their property (house, car, etc.) and paychecks to the church, who then give each of them an "allowance" out of THEIR OWN FUCKING MONEY in the amount they think they can live on, and keep everything else. And there's no shortage of people in and joining the church. They went from a smallish building to a giant one with Romanesque stone pillars out front.

I don't feel bad for those people. For some of them, it isn't faith, but rather the social stigma and the lack of support and community outside of religion.
If we want to put an end to it, we need to acknowledge that the lack of government services keeps some who want to leave trapped in their communities.
Most preachers know this, which is why they are hostile toward abortion and education.

What's funny to me: the church I grew up in hated the Evangelicals and called them fake Christians. One of the more common sermons was to bash their "Prosperity Gospel" as being completely made-up by their leaders. The idea was that 10% of one's assets were to be sacrificed annually to gain forgiveness for sin, but that was only until Jesus became "The Final Sacrifice" and now a simple prayer and faith cover that. Tithing to the church is completely optional by the Bible they claim to read.

The later ideology of tithing is that one shouldn't amass wealth, and should give any excess to the church or towards helping others to prevent that (charity is fine, but the church I grew up in also promoted going out and doing things directly, like feeding/gifting items directly to homeless people and panhandlers). The idea they pushed was that the church would use the money for charity, but that it's even better to do those things yourself, as Jesus would have.

More importantly, around about 400 years ago people realized that maybe it was best to stop with trying to declare who is or isn't a "real" Christian, because that was leading to far too much killing/warfare/etc. Yeah, I think greedy shitbags like this guy aren't followers of Christ at all, but like, I don't belong to his church.

I'm saying the institution of the church, the actual organized arm and the people who run that which hold the doctrine (like for example the catechism, which is explicitly a set of questions and answers as to how things should be interpreted according to the church,) should be holding people representing their faith accountable by punishing them for preaching things well outside the faith.
