The Role: Gosling was originally cast in 2007 as grieving father Jack Salmon in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lovely Bones.

The Method: Believing the character should weigh 210 pounds instead of his baseline 150 pounds, Gosling gained 60 pounds by melting cartons of Häagen-Dazs ice cream and drinking it whenever he was thirsty.

The Firing: When he arrived on set, director Peter Jackson was shocked by the physical change because they had a completely different vision for the character.

The Replacement: Gosling was let go just days before filming began and was replaced by Mark Wahlberg, leaving him, in his own words, "fat and unemployed"

Happens to women all the time. He'll be fine.

I love hearing about the insane lengths some people go to gain weight, when there is I, who will gain 60lbs in sympathy when I watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Yeah not a good idea to just go and make decisions like that on your own.

It's interesting that learning this and knowing his career path, I have to admit that talent comes through troubles and prevails, because damn, he's really good and successful. Fat Gosling looks also good.

... why in the hell would you not check with the director first?

5 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Because a hot-shit actor thinks he's above the director, producer, writer, and everyone else.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Ah well, I’m sure his new gig as Ghost Rider will do him just fine.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He's with Eva Mendes. Nuff said.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

That's a stagering difference between those two images. Makes me wonder how different I'd look if I lost some weight off my fat ass.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He dodged a bullet cos boy did that movie suck

5 days ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 2

Wat. Gosling is 6ft tall. 150lbs is ridiculously underweight.

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He seems to have landed on his feet.

The director of Copland ordered Stallone to gain 60 pounds for the role. His method? Cheesecake. Lots and lots of cheesecake.

Sounds like a party to me

5 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I’m sorry but the interwebs says he’s 6’0-1/2”… 172-180lbs normally. 150lbs is ridiculously thin. (I weighed 155lbs senior year of high school.)

I would have made the excuse that my wife Eva Mendes, keeps me well fed.

5 days ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Were they even married by that point?

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nope. They met on "The Place Beyond The Pines" in 2012. Lovely Bones predates that by 5 years

Eva: THEY TOLD YOU WHAT???

I find it perplexing that you would substitute Mark Walhberg and Ryan Gosling. Like, it's like substituting Skittles for dark chocolate chips in a cookie recipe. (Walhberg is Skittles)

5 days ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Especially because the antagonist looks a lot like Gosling already

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Wahlberg sucks the sweat off a dead donkeys balls. True story

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Skittles? That's being a bit generous. Maybe Candy Corn...

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't be mean to skittles

I try the ice cream method any time I drop below 60KG/132 pounds, or use a lot of butter in my cooking. It doesn't help that I'm mildly lactose intolerant and don't learn from previous lessons

I don't like Peter Jackson. He took too many liberties with Lord of the Rings and obfuscated everything with grand visuals, which were great, but he activelly went against the source material. His biggest crime was the fact he left out Tom Bombadil, because he hated the character, not because it would have padded the runtime too much, but because he hated him. Tom Bombadil was important character for Tolkien, and it was a red flag... Then the Hobbit happened...

Dead Alive and Frighteners are good tho

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A fact nobody wants to hear: The Hobbit was a bedtime story he told his children. He originally wrote it down because he was confusing details and his kids kept calling him on it.
Old Tom Bombadil was a character he made up in their toddler tales, his own “The wind in the willows” (which also had an ill tempered willow). That’s why he is primordial in the later books, "Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before river and the trees…” Literally the original cameo.

Tom was horribly jarring for the story. No sane director would put him in a serious live actions version of TLOTR

4 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Tom is not important at all. A fun character but not necessary.

210 pounds of Gossling for (assuming) 150 pounds of Wahlberg .. that must be in the top10 worst trades in the 21st century

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

60 pounds ≈ 27 kilograms or 4 stone, 4 pounds

5 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

210 pounds ≈ 95.3 kilograms or 15 stone

5 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

150 pounds ≈ 68 kilograms or 10 stone, 10 pounds

I hated that movie. Who wants to watch a pedophile abuse and murder a child, then get away with that?

If I wanted to watch something as disgusting as that predator getting away with it, I'd just watch Trump.

5 days ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 6

And the moral of the story was basically "you just have to get over my death and not bother looking for my killer"

5 days ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

So...
hear me out...
what if...
because of that...
he got fired like that on purpose?

5 days ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

He could have easily just said “no thanks” to the role.

4 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

yeah but... ice cream...

4 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Im happy then that Gosling wasn’t in that movie and it got assigned to Wahlberg.

4 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

*racist, fuck him

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Wahlberg is a garbage request pos tho

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not everything needs to have a fairy tale ending, what would be the point of engaging with any new story?

5 days ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 8

SPOILER ALERT!!

Then why the pedophile ends that way? It sounds like a happy ending. Karma doesn’t fucking exist in real life. Plenty of monsters die happily without any consequences.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Karma does exist, but it's not a mystical force, it's building a supportive environment.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

That’s not karma, that’s another thing that you are naming karma. Please, don’t use a word that has a meaning to name something different, it messes conversations and takes people to confusion. Karma by definition is a mystical force based on the acts of people, that bring equilibrium and some kind of justice. No my friend, it doesn’t exist. You can chose nurturing, fostering or stewardship for that, but not karma.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe you should actually get the meaning right if you want to correct someone about the meaning of a certain term.
But you are right, it was incorrectly formulated in my comment, what I meant to say was, a mechanism similar to what is meant by Karma does actually exist. Also known as "paying it forward", and it does work, because it makes the one who received the free help more likely to also help someone in the future.

The movie has a sentimental and whimsical flair to a tragedy. If you want to portray a tragedy well, I don't think you should use whimsy.

5 days ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Never watched Pan's Labyrinth? Del Toro is known for using whimsy to explore tragedy, it helps people cope and deal with horrible things.

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Jackson not being as good at it as Del Toro is doesn't mean the approach is horrible and should never be done.

No joke. I tried reading the book when it came out (I was in HS) and couldn't finish it. Never understood why anyone actually enjoyed it other than perhaps as a learning tool for those in psychology, social services, etc.
Was taken aback and disgusted when I found out it was being made into a movie.

4 days ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I only saw the movie once and that was in a HS Psychology class.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A friend recommended the book and let me borrow it. I read the whole thing and felt like shit the entire time thinking there would be a payoff or clarity. I asked him why he told me to read it.

"That's not my book. I never said that."

Yo, what the fuck?

4 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I also gained sixty pounds for a role. Excuse me, sixty pounds of rolls

Generally a good idea to speak with the director about life-altering changes like that. But hey, I see he's got a nice future for himself, so whatever works.

4 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Fuck that speaking to someone if that shit was in their vision they should have told everyone before final casting happened.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mostly actors do stuff like this to free their availability for something else without directly quitting and pissing off the studio.

4 days ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

Wouldn't he need to use that 60 pounds for something tho yknow? Not just spend the next 6 months working it off with all that professional help

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And instead he did All Good Things and Blue Valentine

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

60 pounds is a major health risk just to have some vague plausible deniability.

The muscles many of them gain for their roles is also risky. One of the many reasons I prefer animation to live action.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It doesn't have to be at all. It depends on the diet. You can bulk on fish, white meat chicken, fruits, vegetables, rice ect. and there is no real risk. As with all things physical you just need to pay attention to what your body is telling you.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It takes years to bulk up in a healthy manner. But getting a cut look in under a year is just not healthy let alone possible sans drugs.
