The original gif

As many of you have seen http://imgur.com/gallery/dXLM00p , minus the horrible spelling from a classmate (hes a civil engineering major so we can let it slide) on the front page. I, the nephew, would like to explain this more and ride on the coattails of that frontpage post. I'm mad at myself for not posting it to Imgur, because I knew it would do somewhat decent, but knowing me nope.

1st maze

The Idea of the assignment was to build and program a robot made out of NXT legos that would solve a maze without touching the walls in the fastest time. Touching the walls would cost 10 seconds each time. My idea was that if I bypassed the wall and took the 10 seconds i could be the fastest.

2nd maze

As you can see in the 1st and 2nd maze there is a week spot right at the start that if you can get over, or in my case under, you can go straight to the finish.

the Robot

To somewhat verify that I am actually the nephew, here is a picture of the actual robot. Instead of following the rules, like everyone else did, I decided to do what has never been successfully before. The only other time something like this had been attempted the group didn't successfully program the ending of the robot so they had to rely on the wall to knock them over. My first idea was to go over the wall, but it exploded (and as Dora the explorer taught me), so if you can't go over it, and is too stubborn to go around like a loser, then go under. the idea was to use wheels to lift the wall so the robot could go under, Luckily I was able to make it compact enough to turn in the starting area and work. I was the first to successfully finish the maze in my schools history, and I'm the last to go under, because they outlawed it right after, because the slamming of the plexiglass could shatter it. In the race for times, I came in 3rd... but for a mechanical engineering major not bad.

Cat Tax

TL;DR I made thing and it worked

Had to do the same for my mechatronics class. Except the teacher changed the course for every group. And had to finish and go back to start.

"... So I Kobayashi Maru-d that challenge." "What?" "He cheated"

How were u the first to finish the maze in the school's history, yet only finished 3rd for time? Were there 3 other prodigies in your class?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait, maybe I misread but if your'e the only one to ever complete it in the schools history how are you 3rd in time it takes to complete it?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right!? Now i'm skeptical this person did any of this.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nature doesn't give a shit about rules, you keep right on doing it you brilliant bastard!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's engineering. You're *supposed* to cheat. All the greatest advances come that way.

10 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 2

We don't cheat, we learn the rules and find ways around them.

engineers: lawyers of science?

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Never thought of it that way.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Look at formula 1. They employ dozens of lawyers and engineers just to find the grey area of every possible rule.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Sometimes its a matter of wit instead of speed to win a race. Fascinating stuff.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

In my elementary school club for this, the teacher wouldn't let me do anything because I kept correcting problems on my own. We ate shit -.-

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Work smart, not hard.

Thanks for the Dad Advice. I'm gonna go call my dad

Alexander the Great would be proud.

Captain Kirk too.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I too would like to ride the coattail to the front page. Up, up and away!

This isn't the original Gif! Gifs have been around for years, YEARS!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

This guy should be meeting the Prez, not the clock bomber.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

In my class we were each given two NXT bricks. I turned one into a controller for the other.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the way you think! Keep it up the good work! :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no cheating in engineering! Only results matter.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

"because the slamming of the plexiglass could shatter it." clearly ( pun intended ) none of them ever tried to shatter Plexiglas before, eh?

Intro Engineering class had a ball throwing challenge. I used a loophole in weight limit rules to make giant slingshot, won by 50 yds.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Next, design a robot that can hop over the wall and still make it to the end. Unless that's been done already...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dank

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I programmed a robot once. I programmed it to ram anything that triggered the bumper. So full reverse then full forward.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This made me laugh, picturing a robot aggressively running into progressively stronger structures.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always love when a design is so simple and still falls within the design envelope and rules that they have to change the rules. It's 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 a category you can be judged on in competitions like FSAE. Good job!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did you come in 3rd? How was something faster than that?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Because I touched the wall 2 times 20 seconds was added to my time

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Two?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When did you touch it a second time? Or are they counting it flipping cus that's crappy.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is it the last wall at the ending?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well your gonna make a great engineer thats for damn sure.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You're* Hopefully you're an engineer. Apparently that's a valid excuse for poor grammar and spelling.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

*sigh* sitting here trying to give positive reinforcement to someone for doing something cool and I get grammar nazied.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

To be fair, "your" and you're" is an EXTREMELY simple thing to learn. Its basic English. Take 60 seconds and learn, it'll help your life.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1. This wasn't from OP, 2. This is the Internet. We take no prisoners.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

OMG IM IN LIPSCOMB ENGINEERING TOO

OMG someone knows!!!!

Ayy! Jonathan!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"brake"... *cringe*

10 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 10

'Legos', double cringe. The plural is the same as the singular, you engineering-denigrating asshole.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

the one time someone actually spelled it "brake" and they actually meant "break"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make it double

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's no stopping him

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

once again he is a civil engineering major, what do you expect...

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 7

I expect anyone in college to know how to spell.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 7

YouMust not set your expectations so high.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

He hes a point

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technically "he" is the group of bond girls

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Might wanna ease up on that...you made a few errors of your own!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I know I did. It was a quick post because I had to write a paper so I didn't really check for errors

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Mechanical engineers, eh? What do you expect? ;)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In his defense, you made more mistakes in your post than he did in his.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Mechanical engineers to not be assholes? Pet peeve of mine when people pick on CE (I'm not CE, but all my ME profs were dicks about CE)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Eh we are friends so it's more of joking around than picking on. Nobody here is dicks to the CE but ya I can see how that can be a pet peeve

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Almost everyone I know who can math hard, can't do so well with the putting the words together thing. It's fine. :-)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Plexiglass wouldn't shatter...they were just pissed that you didn't follow their rules.

10 years ago | Likes 676 Dislikes 2

Tell that to hockey arena glass

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Right. Maybe if it fell off the roof

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Would have to be a very tall building if a piece that light is gonna have enough speed to shatter on impact with the ground.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plexiglass (acrylic) it pretty brittle but polycarbonate would work nicely or lock the walls in place if it bothers them so much.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, he did follow their rules, it's just that their rules had a flaw.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What rules?... 1. Start at the start, 2. Get to the finish (and stop).

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They should have just made it so the walls can't be lifted instead of changing the rules.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Creative thinking is not rewarded in school. BUT DON'T STOP DOING IT. The world needs people like you more than you know!!

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

If you build a robot to remove a kidney, do you want one that just rips it out or one that carefully maneuvers to remove it.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And I'm sure the other kids can make a robot that does what you want.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How about instead we use nanobots that don't do cutting but repair the kidney? Or safely remove a dead kidney? Or replace kidney function?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ya think?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately. I have OCD, so it's hard to not think.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or that you found a loophole rather.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Speaking of loopholes, Garfunkel and Oates have a great song about one.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

MFW he puts it in the wrong loophole.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for that. I found that quite entertaining.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

glad you did. I thougght so as well

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't the long edge the weak point? I would expect it to potentially shatter that way.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My boy ball team did something like this we beat out actual engineers. We weren't invited to compete the following year...

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Damnit BOT BALL.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Let's stifle creativity and thinking. . . Yeah, that will teach them." Do you want Hitler? That's how you get hitler

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I have trouble disputing your rather amusing point.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was saying it's bullshit you guys weren't invited back. Also, the joke about hitler's art work.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know what you were saying and I find it funny

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry, at first glance I read 'disputing' as 'deciphering 'for some reason!!
