When people read "America is racist" they tend to think about the black population and the civil rights movement. Most of those who today love to claim Irish descent, fail to remember that it was perfectly ok to discriminate against the Irish. Most at least know about the oriental internment camps of WWII. But when films like BTTF3 have throwaway lines like "he killed 12 men, not including Chinese" - that's not a joke, Asians didn't even really count as killing people.

So was the subsequent enfranchisement of women and slaves somehow anti-Constitutional? I don't think it was. In my view, the expansion of voting rights achieved a greater realization of the values expressed in the founding documents, not a betrayal of them. The Constitution allowed for profound social progression without having to recreate the state from the ground up. That's because the values in it exceeded what the framers could personally live up to.

I'm not calling the framers saints by any measure, nor do I give them the credit due to later generations. But I do think that the system they created had some genuinely progressive ideas in it, and thus to call it all "utter horseshit" is, in my view, unfair and inaccurate. I think the framers were *more* progressive than the current regime, and the current regime is *betraying* the parts of the framers' vision that are worth preserving.
