It's not ideal, but there's not much of a choice where I live - a summer resort area. It draws a lot of "seasonal" people for landscaping, house cleaning, etc. Some of them will take a check, but they're in the minority. About once a month I go to the ATM. Beyond that, I use plastic for just about everything.

I heard that mattress stores just have very low overhead and they're heavily marked up, so they can get by selling a low number of mattresses.
I did some napkin math and if half the people in a city of 100k buy a new mattress every 10 years, that's about 96 mattresses purchased per week. Even if you cut down the numbers, it still is kind of surprising to think about how many mattresses people are buying.

There is a Mattress firm near where I lived. I bought a mattress there because it was decent price, and the place was going out of business, so it was on sale! That was something like eight years ago. Wouldn't you know it, the place is still going out of business! What a long sale! I was younger and unaware of how much the business is a hustle. If you are new to shopping for a mattress, watch out for any place going out of business. It's a scam. Shop elsewhere. Learn from my mistake :P.

Well MattressFirm is a giant in the mattress business, I would assume part of the local store model is having more localized delivery for online orders, but some people do still want to try out a mattress first, just that it only takes a few minutes and the store likely doesn't need to sell much to stay afloat compared to like a mcdonalds.

Exactly. People do still want to try out mattresses. You might not realize you actually like something more plush than firm and so on. Lifestyle changes could mean you need a different type as well. As you said it's just usually you go in, try a few, order one, and leave. You're not there more than like 20 minutes most likely. So yeah you're not likely going to see many people in there.

Exactly. Overhead is quite low in those places. One sale is usually enough to last days. They usually either don't have employees or a very small number and only like 1 person a day for daily things. Also as said you don't typically see anyone there because it's an in-and-out kind of thing. You go in, try some mattresses, order one, and leave.
