Ok, so this is actually a favorite topic of mine. This kind of chair likely got its start in the French salons under Napoleon, and at that time were used for gossip. But they actually became popular for use as courtship chairs, during the Victorian era and America's guilded age. Designed so a couple and their chaperone could all see one another while being an "appropriate" distance apart. There were other kinds of courtship furniture too. 1/2
A couple could graduate to an S-shaped chair for just two people, with a chaperone still in the room but not as close. (some people only had the s-chair, while wealthier families who hosted regular social gatherings would often have both) Eventually, usually once betrothed, though sometimes reserved for newlyweds, a couple could be trusted to sit on a loveseat. Other variations also existed. Some more common, like the all-the-way-around bourne setee. Others rarer, like the confidant couch (2/3)
(or the wingman couch, as I like to call it) Which was a loveseat with a chaperone chair attached at one or both ends, so that a lady's made, governess, or valet could chaperone/wingman the couple.
I assumed one would survive. I mean what's the point of killing people to keep something secret if everyone is dead? Unless you're some sort of secrecy perfectionist who doesn't trust themselves not to spill the tea...

I think someone mistook "private" for "secret" somewhere along the way

I think it would be pretty non-secret obvious if three people were sitting in the secret discussions chair.

Looks like a smoke circle waiting to happen, complete with an ashtray mounted in the center.

It'd work a lot better without the pole in the middle.

It’s a chaperone chair for two young people courting and one elder for respectability

But two can keep a secret if one of them is dead

No. It was designed to share a single electric lamp for reading.

How is it different than just three chairs next to each other?
