I'm not knocking this... I used to sign these kinda petitions, but have they ever resulted in any actual changes?... I feel like as long as politicians are receiving crates of cash from whoever we're petitioning against are they really inclined to do what the people want?... then again I'm in America and the voice of the people is always overridden by that of the sound of huge bribes and luxury gifts.

Occasionally they do but it's generally a long multi-year process and often the outcome isn't exactly what was petitioned for. It depends a lot of the interests of other stakeholders involved.

In the EU these things work sometimes. I have a friend of mine who managed to advance a disability-related law through this kind of mechanism. We’ll need 10 sets of eyes on this and I will want to contact the organizer for follow up, but there is a fighting chance.

It's not a simple petition. It's an official mechanism of the EU for citizens to bring issues to the Parliament. Very few of these ever managed gather enough signatures.

Arizona has a citizen's initiative clause in the state constitution. Short of it is, if you can get enough signatures, the proposition *has* to be put on the next election ballot. And if it passes, it cannot be removed or modified except by another citizen's initiative. The politicians hate it, given how often they try undermining it. Around here it's good to pay attention to the petitioners. The latest subversion I've seen is astroturfing bad legislation a petitioner was collecting (1/)

The line pushed is "expand school choices" but they are almost exclusively used by people who would be putting their kids in private school anyways (so no realistic effects) and they take money away from public schools (already cash starved). This would be especially bad to get passed in this way because it'd take another initiative to remove or change. (2/2)

In fairness, astroturfing a citizen's initiative is a new one. They are usually good. The last big initiative to pass was legalizing abortion. The usual attacks are things like trying to pass restrictions on what counts as a valid signature or the time frame in which signatures may be collected.

Signed it. But as a german, I wouldn't hold my breath that it actually bears any useful fruits, should it be succeed in being parliamentary adressed. Too much misplaced guilt in too old heads and too much money made in arms deals.

Not only does this need to pass 1.5M signatures, a certain number of countries need to surpass a specific threshold. And Germany is currently under that threshold. So a signature from Germany does help.
