#43 I'm like this with grocery store/restaurant tomatoes specifically, but that's an issue of the kinds of tomatoes that get used - the ones bred for a long shelf life or handling shipping well tend to do it at the expense of flavor. (Fortunately I live in an area with a lot of farmer's markets so a personal rule of 'buy the tomatoes from somebody who grew them' is relatively easy to stick to.)

#38 Before you think "Well the interwebs wasn't so heavy back in diallup days" you probably never had to discover, except occasionally on sunday evenings or sometime, that ISPs did not have a line for every subscriber. The biggest and best may have had 1 for every 3 or 4, the lower tier and regional ones might have been 1 for 10 to 15... so yah, you would have had low chances of getting on, and they'd probably have the maximum session time set to 20 mins or something so you'd get bumped a lot.

I can remember hitting my AOL dial-up after dinnertime in the mid 1990s and seeing I was in a queue ("Currently 811 out of 12755" kind of shit).

I had cable Internet in 2002 in Coeur d'alane Idaho. Long before YouTube, there was Winamp shoutcast; endlessly streaming ATHF, invader zim, Sealab 2021, and Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham music videos. It was my first apartment, I was 18, worked at Taco bell and played lan games all day. Life was good.

#43 my sister and nephew are allergic to tomatos, so growing up we never had them in anything. Ketchup was fine because of how heavily processed it was. But the first time i had a tomato on a sandwich i was 14 and was like what the fuck is this red slimy bullshit?

Raw tomatoes are gross. Cooked tomatoes are proof God tries to correct mistakes. Fight me.

4 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 9

Raw tomatoes have their place, but my wife eats them like fruit. Just half a tomato, sliced, for breakfast. So gross

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

My wife will pick a tomato out of the garden and eat it like an apple. Seeds and juice running down her face. Absolute savage.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I love how so many people have very strong opinions on tomatoes. I think that’s horrid! Like biting into an onion!

#43 Its almost like cooking something changes its flavor profile and can make it tastier. "Oh my kids like chicken fried steak, beef stew and carne asada but don't like steak tartar" The FUCK you talking about?!

4 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

Yeah, there are very few foods I can think of that I'd say taste the same cooked and raw.
a LOT of raw veggies are not for me but I like them cooked

#25 My family wasn't poor, but they were frugal. That's why we had great family vacations. We never had steak. But, one time mother found some on sale and we had steak fore dinner.

My older sister, who was about 5, took her steak into the dining room to eat it. My parents asked her why. She said it was too loud in the kitchen, and she had to bring it into the dining room so she could taste it.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#43 i used to be like that. It may have been a texture thing.

#8 That's far too many uteruses... Uteri? How does one pluralize uterus?

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Wombs. Pronounced like bombs.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some bombass wombs for sure.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The etymology is Latin so uteri but nobody would care if you said uteruses except weirdos. They know what you meant.

I'm beginning to think that taking care of Pippin is a lot like other people's experiences of raising kids.

#8 @op if the baby (in this case: babies) isn’t where it’s supposed to be you might not get very big. It’s rare but more common than you’d expect that women go to the hospital bc of abdominal pains and it turns out they’re in labour, without them having any idea that they’re pregnant. And with this woman, maybe it showed a bit but she did also just give birth so being a bit bigger than usual wouldn’t be strange.
But, bloody hell, what a nightmare! I don’t even want to be pregnant with 1 baby…

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Also saw this quote from the article - “From rural areas, people don’t know what is wrong with them. They don’t know how many children they are pregnant with and sometimes whether they are pregnant also,” Basu said." She also didn't get an ultrasound before giving birth so that also contributed to the surprise element

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ffs. Honestly? Blame it on HER?! One of the reasons I’m happy I don’t have nor want kids is bc I’m getting more than ready to burn the capitalist/racist/patriarchal society to the ground. (Saying this from Sweden. If we don’t get a government change in September, we’re doomed. Not that our govt isn’t already actively working on dooming us, but still).

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean if you're saying that from Sweden... damn we might really be fucked.

#43 I love sliced tomatoes on sandwiches and in other dishes, but if you are trying to say a raw tomato straight out of the garden tastes the same as ketchup, or spaghetti/pizza sauce, you're absolutely insane or cannot actually taste anything.

4 months ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 4

This. Precisely this. The insinuation that raw tomato is the same as any other form of tomato is insane. For me it's not even a matter of taste, but of texture. I can't stand the texture of raw tomatoes, or sun dried for that matter. The taste is fine though, so as long as they're blended or very finely chopped, I'm good. The meme comes off as "Hurr, durr, if you like fried chicken you must like raw chicken too!"

4 months ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 2

I cant stand the texture of tomatoes. Love tomato sauce, though, as long as its not chunky.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I hate raw tomatoes, too acidic. Cooked tomatoes taste great.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a raw tomato hater, you won't make me eat that moist acid gooey spit. Once cooked it completely changes texture (and taste) and it's fine. I mean, you won't eat raw flour, and yet everyone like bread and pastries.

4 months ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

Anyone who thinks tomatoes are gross, is my enemy.

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 18

Oh damn i meant this as a kind of harmless joke but i guess shook the hornets nest :D i love toe mates

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's also about how flavors can be more then the sum of their parts, raw tomato tastes like sewage smells to me but combine that with beef, cheese, and bread and it's a perfectly nice vitamin-packed flavor enhancer

4 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

When my brother and I were pickier eating kids we said, "a tomato is an ingredient, not a food"

4 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This. There's something about raw tomatoes that tastes horrendous to me, like how a crushed tomato leaf smells, but cooked it's fine.

While we're talking about fruit; fresh peaches are divine, while cooked ones are just barely tolerable. Apples and pears seem fine in either form.

4 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

I love raw tomatoes, and most things made out of tomato...

...except tomato soup and tomato juice. Those will both make me gag. I can't stand the way they taste. Go figure.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Same. I grabbed what I thought was an apple out of the fridge when I was a toddler and took a huge bite. Nope. Tomato. So upset! Such trauma! I can still remember it to this day, three decades later lol

4 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

As a tomato fan: You are absolutely correct.

Especially if we're talking about those gross, oversized mealy tomatoes they sell at the supermarket. Smaller tomatoes (cherry, grape) generally taste way better, and the big ones can be workable if you core them like a pepper. But all of them are improved with things like heat, salt, oil...

4 months ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

I generally love bigger tomatoes (herilooms, beefsteak, etc) because smaller tomatoes are very sugary and acidic. I love a lot of prepared tomatoes, but tomato soup is a blight upon the universe.

4 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Herilooms & yellow tomatoes have less acidity (that’s what my Gma said anyway) - I love them. Fresh grown in the summer with a little S&P is superb!

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah man, I love that acid. And more importantly -- so like, the part of the tomato with the most flavor is the juicy pulp surrounding the seeds, whereas the worst is the flesh right next to it, that pale and mealy placenta that all of the seeds grow off of. In smaller tomatoes, the ratio is a lot more skewed towards pulp, and as you get bigger there's more placenta filling the middle.

I'll allow the comment about tomato soup as long as we agree that sun-dried tomatoes are heavenly.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sun dried tomatoes are stellar!

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#21 what is this?

4 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Actually, this is fluoride. Used to be foam in that thing, and you had to hold it there for five agonizing minutes. If was gag inducing if any of it touched your tongue. Only kids had to do it at that time. I HATED it.

Idk what they’re referring to by “step on a plug” though.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Electrical plugs, in the US anyway, have sharp metal bits that hurt almost as much as a Lego when you step on them.

4 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh! Ong yes! I’ve done that haha!

If you are grinding your teeth in your sleep, you need some form-fitted plastic dental splint. For that, they take an imprint of your teeth by pressing this thing with some ... putty? And I don't know who would complain about the taste. All I remember is the instinctual, irrational panic, that some of that would fall into my throat and I would choke to death right there. It's basically dry waterboarding.

4 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They also do this for braces. It’s the WORST.

4 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No grinded teeth here - but had this for braces and retainer. Horrific experience.
