My cats don't do these things because I trained them and provide them with enrichment items suitable for them. I also try my best to play with them daily so they're not starved for interaction.
Cats are very intelligent and, in my experience, they love puzzles. If you don't give them things to do, they will find things to do.
The same kind of people who let their dog jump up on people or chew on furniture and just laugh it off and dismiss it. The same kind of people who let their kids throw tantrums or act out in public and just dismiss it. These types of people exist everywhere and are more common than I have patience for. If my dog starts acting up it's probably a failure on my part. They either need more stimulation and are bored, or need to learn/be trained about what is acceptable.
Some are more resistant/easy than others, it's true. Not debating that fact. But good trainers/parents can usually make good progress with even the most stubborn of animals. There's a reason why the expression, "there are no bad dogs, only bad training" exists after all. Predisposition is a real thing and I don't want to minimize that. But at the same time it's important to recognize that even the "worst" of animals/kids can be trained to do better than their baseline.
As someone who held a no kill shelter for cats, and had 2 oranges no less. Yeah the cats kinda don't care lol. I love them bc I love animals, bc animals>ppl but uhhhhhh. Dogs either wanna play or cuddle. Cats wanna see the world burn (i resemble that remark just not my shit plz)
And here my dumb ass kitten/cat proofed my apt. before I brought one home. I love cats but hate a stupid mess that's my own damn fault. Biggest mess they make is with catnip flower and when I say so. That's what the giant evil vacuum cleaner is for. Pets aren't supposed to be for likes, they are for love and literally part of the family!
My younger brother rented from a lady with a cat. It's name was Baast which I'm told is an inch into Egyptian name for cats. Anyway that little bastard decided to knock over a jar from the top shelf in the kitchen in the middle of the night and my brother walked in and out of the kitchen without stepping on any of the class luckily
Videos like this make me so glad that Scoop is a good kitty. She will sometimes knock things off the nightstand playing with them (and continues to play with them), but she doesn't do it just to knock them off. When she wants to play with her favorite feather toys, she comes and asks or sits by the toybox waiting for me to get the hint, looking at them and at me when I pass. However, foil and citrus rinds didn't work with her when she was a rowdy, post-feral kitten either, just like that one tv,
Yup. I gave up keeping my kitties off the counter (tried everything). They now get treats there daily lmao. But since my couch is too fluffy the only thing they scratch is the fabric bed frame, which they like to demon crawl underneath, but thats whatever. I try to keep one out from behind the TV but she hasn't knocked it over (yet). Theyre very good kitties!
Scoop understand "no" and "Ow" (our safe word, I guess) very well. She also knows the difference between me saying "ow" to let her know she's getting rough and me actually saying it in pain. The first, she stops and considers what she's doing and how serious I am. The second, she panics. We're very bonded, so she doesn't want to hurt me.
Fortunately my cat has no interest in human food. Now the dog's food, and glasses of water, different story. He's obsessed with having a sip of anyone's glass of water, despite having his own fountain that I clean and keep full on the regular.
Not gonna lie, when my cats started doing stuff like this I shot them in the butt with a nerf gun. It shut that kind of bs down quick fast and in a hurry.
And yourself as well. As soon as you see something you don't like and you can change things, do it so they don't do it a2nd time(read get a chance to do it again) and learn to keep doing it
So true. If you don't provide some interesting outlet for the animal's energy with toys and scratching posts, etc, they'll find their own. And you're not gonna like it.
Way too many people do absolutely no training past potty training and expect their cats & dogs to just conform to human behavior, norms, and the concepts like rigid acceptance of rules.
Then, they persist in asking the pets questions, "why did you do this", what's wrong with you"? Single word commands, with a consistent tone really does work.
My moronic stepbrother is legitimately convinced that other animals understand human languages (verbal and body) and that humans are the odd ones out unable to intuitively understand the verbal and body languages of other animals. He won't clean the litterbox more often than once a month and yells at his cat for her stress responses (that he insists aren't stress responses but "quirks" that she has to learn to stop doing). I hate him so much.
I've had cats my entire life and you absolutely CAN teach them, it just doesn't look like teaching dogs or people, and it requires knowing the cat's personality and what's important to cat software. My cats have pretty universally hated being on counters and prefer scratching THEIR stuff vs my stuff.
There are also citrus sprays that they hate the smell of that can be used on some surfaces. And then you rub catnip on the things they *are* allowed to use. And make sure cat trees are sturdy and tall so they can get a good stretch while scratching them. Otherwise it won't work.
Then sticky tape for the win. Works with 3 different cats in my adult life. It started with areas they were able yo reach air the sticky tape. 2 tried with our tvs but were deterred pretty quickly. Our most recent just gave up bc too many surfaces had sticky tape on the edges. Took a couple of weeks, eventually removed all tape. Cats successfully trained. Tbh the most current will every now and again rip at the carpet, but these days we got lazy in that sector
Make known what is unacceptable. I see evidence of my cats jumping on the kitchen counters all the time, but they sure as hell wouldn’t do it right in front of me.
This is because cats only comprehend conditional rules. They can't understand that there's an agreed upon rule that "I'm never allowed on the kitchen counters"; they only understand it as "I'm not allowed on the kitchen counter *when mosichui is present*." It's the same with many breeds of dogs and why we have so many home security videos of pets doing exactly what they're taught not to do once the owner isn't around anymore.
Exactly! This is why we make sure not to have anything in the house that can hurt them, not even on top of the fridge. Their treats are locked away during the day and their food is stored in a bin with a twist on lid. We have to be smarter than them to keep them safe.
Not just them, but our other property too. Having shelves with delicate things on them only secured by their weight and having cats don't mix. The cat's natural instinct is to climb to the highest points in the room and they simply can't comprehend the concept of valuing property or not breaking things. Because property or saving non-food resources is a human concept that other animals don't have the mental capacity to understand. Same with rabbits and cables; you can't teach them not to chew it
EatYourSoylentGreenAndShutUp
Most of these could have been avoided if they stopped filming and intervened.

Science cats.

Maybe if people put down their phones and intervened instead of just watching, their pets wouldn't be doing this stuff.
OmNachoMama
I've had cats for more then 40 years, and they got into all sorts of stiff, but never like this
sneakypoo
Oh yeah, and how many internet points would that get ya, huh? You didn't think about that, now did you!?
Crispy4Skin
This proofs the earth can't be flat. Otherwise cats would have knocked everything off.

Right to Jail. For cats…. So I guess a kennel.
LittleAzie
Cats are going to do cat things, and that chaos is part of the glory of having one as family.

I never understand why people just take videos of this stuff instead of trying to stop it, gotta get those fake Internet points I guess

Though you are correct, no amount of training can tame certain dogs or cats. I've had a few of each that refused to be truly domesticated.

Dogs just know they've done something wrong when they misbehave. Cats tend to look you right in the face like you're weird for not liking it

I have over time had 3 male castrated outdoor cats since they were kittens, and I've never seen shit like this.

Those cats weren't bored.

exactly. I waited almost 10 years on getting the 2nd cat, because I wanted to be sure that I lived a place where he could go outside if he wanted to.

Teach. Your. Pets. Super simple stuff.

I don’t know if we taught it cat not to get on food surfaces or we just got really lucky that she happens to humor us by not going on food surfaces

Teach your cats? Do you know any cats? All they learn is don't do that shit when someone is watching and close enough to stop you.

I had a cat for 16 years. A little effort as a kitten and he never jumped up on to tables or work surfaces, nor did he scratch furniture. Wasn't hard.
MeanMisterClean
When trying to make a point, avoid using unreliable personal anecdotes. It's not hard. Also, all cats are not the same.

No, I don't think I will.

Wrong. Aluminum foil and sticky tape can teach them ‘never’. They will stop trying eventually.
