Convenience. Being averse to change. Those would be my guesses for why people accept it. As I said elsewhere here I just cut out Netflix years ago myself and haven't really bothered with TV/movies much since because for me it's just hassle to find an alternative that isn't shitty in some way or other too.

I can't hear a single line of dialogue anymore without maxing up the volume, and I have to throw my headphones off in a panic everytime someone slams a car door or there is music. There are probably ways to get around this with some type of h4xx0r stuff, but I haven't used a computer since Napster and ICQ was hip, and I suspect something like that has to be involved.

I'd also reccomend checking out local media places. I dont know about DVD's, but ive found some great music stores with second hand vinyl/cds. My car still has a cd player and I love listening to them on longer drives.

Tubi has drastically increased their commercials, though. A 1.5 hr movie takes like 2-2.5 hrs to get through now. Commercials every 5 mins it feels like. And their movie selection is all direct to video crap now.

I thoughtlessly dismissed it for years, but then when searching for a movie I wanted to see, found Tubi was the only one hosting it, and from that day my eyes were opened it has an impressive library of movies and shows. Was even more impressed by its massive catalog of LGBTQ+ movies, which as a lesbian something I'm oft starved for, especially ones that aren't some pretentious period piece that has them die or nonsensically break up cuz society as if gay couples didn't exist in history.

Thanks. Youtube ads are atrocious - useless, scammy, in weird spots. Back in the day when we had Hulu they would play the same ad repeatedly during a show, sometimes twice in an ad break. That's the kind of shit that's intolerable for me, along with LOUD, and insulting ("your life sucks and you're a loser but if you buy our product and/or service you'll be a god amongst men!" type shit). Might have to check it out.

I grew up dealing with commercials so it's second nature for me to just ignore them. It's wild to me that so many people have such a vehement hatred of them nowadays, when I just don't care about them enough to hate them. And I mean, advertisements do have to exist in some capacity, for customers to know that your product or service exists at all.

If I got livid every time I had to pause what I'm doing, I'd probably have pretty high blood pressure. We have a few retro stores here that have buy 4 get 1 free or buy 1 get one. And huge liquidations. I used to just biy games from them but.... lately.. everytime i go in i get 5 or 10. At a time. Its so cheap... and i have stacks of old dvd drives for computers. Also good to have the original just in case the mpaa ever tries their shit on me.

I've had Plex with a Lifetime Pass, and it's been great, but lately, they are pushing more and more things I don't care about. As it is, I can't even use the LG app on my TV without an internet connection. It's probably gonna get worse later down the road. I still use Plex, but mainly for music with Android Auto while I drive. I've since began using Jellyfin.

4K UHDs are unfortunately going for a lot more as the critical mass has dropped as most people don't mind the low quality on low tier streaming. Which is a bit of a shame, but still, for the most part I'd rather pay and keep the physical copy stashed away forever.

Its kinda a mixed bag. I have so many movies i honestly rarely watch stuff plex has. I do like the live tv option for background noise. But i have 1500 movies and almost 400 seasons of shows. Its more or less like a tubi platform. Maybe someone else has more experience watching its lineup.

I buy old computers on marketplace for like 20 bucks and steal the drives. I dont need 4k but its nice but bluerays are more prone to cracking because the top protective layer was manufactured. 05mm thinner than dvds and cds. All burned media from 98-2005 is still in great shape. I like the offline option. Just in case we gotta go back a few decades of tech.

You might want to learn basic soldering and how to drain voltage from capasitators/CRT's. Most old stuff needs some recapping and other TLC before plugging them in.

I would but honestly... im questioning the longevity of magnetic tape storage. 50 years of degradation is about a 20% magnetic decay. Even in perfect stored climate. Eventually cds and dvds will have the issue of plastic degradation and oxidation of the foil layer but i feel like it might last longer.

nah man, you can run your plex server on a potato. Im far from being an IT guy and I made my server just fine with just youtube tutorials. Currently its running on my 3rd PC which is mostly like 10+ yrs old parts (I think the gpu on it is a 770 4gb, which was pretty good but back in like 2015)

You might want something just for better transcoding. Plex lets you down scale resolution for better bandwidth but i play games on the same computer and i never notice the load with 3 ppl on it. My computer isnt top of the line. But i do have a decent cpu.

You can set up your own media server with plex. Its free for home use( intranet) but to access your server outside its a small fee now. I have movies tv shows and my music on my server. As well plex has free shows but if you pay you get access to live tv channels as well.

So with plex you can create your own media library with your own PC/server. Then you can stream your own videos just like netflix.
To do it locally ( Your own tv with your server on the same network for example) is free.
If you want to access your library from outside networks you have a small fee (either one-time or monthly) I never paid for it though
I have a PC dedicated for the library just bc I dont want my main PC being open 24/7 but you dont need a dedicated server really
