they have similar shit in the UK; heros in teams of four arrive at an intesection in balaclavas, cut down the cameras, then scatter. Make it too expensive to keep repairing them, and make sure you get the cables when you cut them down. make it hard or impossible to repair them until the replacement budget is gone and they stop putting them back up

We did. Read the 'Patriot' act of 2001. It had been written up as a fascist wet dream even before the airliners hit the towers so it was all ready to be voted on. It's used to seize drug money or just 'money' from immigrants with no bank accounts. It doesn't catch terrorists - foreign or domestic.

Is it a thing? Yes. Is it very useful as evidence? Not really. Several studies have indicated that it's not very reliable as evidence, since a person's gait can vary by a fair amount in slightly different circumstances (which is why something as small as a rock in your shoe can alter your gait substantially).
It's also only considered supportive evidence with low evidential value, so the only way it would likely make a difference is if there was already a fair bit of evidence against you. 1/2

I'd say you're more likely to be hindered by the discomfort of a rock in your shoe if you needed to flee on foot than you would be helped by the altered gait if you wound up on trial.
If you really want to go that route, go to a discount shoe store and get two identical pairs of shoes, with one that's a size or two bigger. Put a bulky insole pad or lift in one of the larger shoes, then wear that one and the normal shoe. Throws off the gait, probably to a larger degree, but isn't uncomfortable.

Most paintball guns don't look much like proper firearms, but then again, neither does a cell phone or a wallet. Some cops act in bad faith when they have any excuse to do so.

To be fair, they got him cause the same vehicle got seen *by all the cameras* in and around all the sites where one was cut down. The fact he took solar panels is just furthering evidence to be used against him.
And I say this to point out they have programs and models that can accurately show where you have been throughout their entire network and that the same car was seen close enough to each site was enough.
Which is terrifying cause they don't need a warrant for any of that info.

I think we’ll see some progress on this front. Supreme Court recently ruled that a warrant was needed to use gps tracking and fell under certain protections. It’s an interesting listen/read on the SCOTUS website.
