We could easily prevent ramming attacks. Every single death to a ramming attack is a massive, outrageous failure on the part of the event organizers and the government. It is cheap to build and move vehicle-proof barricades and they should be a complete perimeter around the crowd area. There is no excuse for this failure and it keeps happening.

I agree completely, but sometimes they happen when there is no special event, it's just an ordinary day. When the incel who drove down a sidewalk in Toronto in 2018 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Toronto_van_attack ), it was just a random Monday with people going about their business.

Yeah, I think we should have more barriers on sidewalks in general. It's good to have barriers between cars and pedestrians, mostly in case of accidents. A single well-placed bollard might've stopped that Toronto attack. A wall of bollards would've stopped it for sure.

Sicherheitsverwahrung would be the word, that circumvents the limitation of 20 or 25 years of maximum imprisonment. And that ass would have qualified.
I'll also note that I'm not shitting on the work of the police here. They did as much as they could and preserving their own lives is high up there in terms of priority.

They already knew all they needed to know about him. He had been send back to Germany for trying to enter Syria to join ISIS, sentenced for violent crimes and preparation of a terror attack. The German justice system had been fully aware of him. Just like they had been aware of the islamic terrorist who killed 13 people and injured 67 in Berlin in 2016. Today our politicians repeat the same thing they said 10 years ago: "We need to check if something needs to be changed." and then do nothing.

And, like you, I do think the bigwigs will do nothing more than say something to appear empathic, and then do nothing to adress the situation.
In this case a tracker on his feet could have helped, or - given his allegiance - just throwing him into prison for potential endangerment of the public. We are not without options after all, they are just not properly used.

“Non-lethal” is a bit of a misnomer- it’s more accurate to say “less lethal”. Almost every weapon system/HTH training has the potential to kill, even if used properly.
That said, SWAT-style units don’t regularly carry as many less lethal options that work in open areas as compared to patrol officers. Their job is to engage the most dangerous suspects, and are armed & trained accordingly.
They’re more likely to carry tasers , beanbag rounds etc. when doing crowd control and the like.

Maybe they could borrow a taser from a patrol officer, if they can't carry one around in their enormous vehicles just in case of such an event. I mean, we _do_ generally prefer that the pigs try to arrest suspects, not execute them, right?

While I’d prefer people get taken into custody instead of being killed in the streets, that’s not always a realistic option.
First of all, a person with a knife already attacking and killing people is absolutely among the “most dangerous”.
Second, bullet resistant body armor is actually less effective against knives than firearms.
Third, if there was a nearby officer equipped with a taser, it would be THAT officer’s job to use it. Handing it off to a SWAT officer is nonsensical.

I'd consider someone with a firearm considerably more dangerous, personally, but yes, I'm not saying that the SWAT team was an inappropriate choice. Rather, I still don't think the state's default response to any lightly armed suspect should be "kill them and sort it out later". As for the last part, I suppose I should admit that the "borrow it" suggestion was slightly tongue-in-cheek because the obviously more sensible solution is for their cops to have those as an option in the first place.

Yes? Trying to take down a known-dangerous person with at least one visible weapon in a non-lethal fashion just exposes people who arent psychopathic mass murderers to undue risk. Less-lethal munitions are in no way 100% effective, you dont gamble someones life in a situation like this on if a taser or beanbag will stop a charge
And before you say it, "just shoot the legs!" is hollywood bullshit

I don't think that risk really applies if he's running toward a group of armed and armored cops, not innocent bystanders. Sure, there's a risk one of them might get hurt, but I think there's supposed to be some acceptable risk, there. Allowing them to use "I was afraid" as a blanket excuse for executing someone invites... American style policing. They could at least _try_ the taser and bean bags first.
