notoriousplb
These results based on a poll of 1600 people when 30 million voted.. Yeah that's bound to be accurate!!
Butane9000
The problem is often that young voters lack wider experience with the world at large. As time goes on beliefs change. We'll see what happens
Saustino
Another great way to put it... "youngest most naive people with least life experience and wisdom want to stay in EU"
TheEightfoldPath
I'd rather think the reason why older people voted leave is because they've seen how things have progressed.
NocturnalDaedra
Democracy at work man.
jackbos
Alternately: "Those with wisdom and experience are trying to make a better world for the next generation by making a tough decision now."
soupy
Hard earned wisdom at that, being the ones to originally vote in.
lurkingoldman
Listen to your elders. OK, downvote to hell. But did you ever consider they may have learned a thing or two?
ImTooLazyToComeUpWithaWittyUsername
So basically youth are full of ideas where everyone loves each other and the world should be perfect like the Bernie supporters here.
Trikk
People who lived before the EU became what it is today and have lots of experience left, people who get their news from social media remain.
PSTimeArt
and the % of 25-49 (so not old people) it's more or less the same
lucky13kenny
"hurr my grandpa is so stupid sure he seen a lot but it's not like he occasionally browses Huffington Post or anything"
wompirebat
Now compare the percentage of each age group that actually voted. Usually a much larger percentage of geriatrics vote vs younger voters.
Hayashima
I'm guessing retired people have more time on their hands whereas young people are busy looking for work / school / drink / upvotes
Mikemikemike23
Because a poll of 1652 people is extremely accurate...
HereComeTheOffensiveComments
My thoughts exactly.
MechanicalArmada
Dumb American here.. did the youth not flock to the voting booths to voice their opinions?? Or were they simply outnumbered?
DoorCellar
The baby boomers outnumbered us
toby3612
Couldn't be bothered as usual, only 43% youth turnout. They posted a lot on facebook though if that counts for anything?
LeGlitch
Tough luck but younger voices dont weight more. That's democracy. When the majority switches back different decisions will be taken.
onassi2
Definitely not because young people tend to vote based on feelings and emotions (they do).
ThisIsFrigglish
Those who recently attended institutions awash in EU subsidy money think they should stay in the EU? The hell you say.
Hiyougami
I'm £30,000 in debt. Really feeling that subsidy money guys.
ThisIsFrigglish
I rather wonder how they'd feel about aligning themselves with Chase Morgan and JP Stanley, two of the most rapacious corporations on Earth.
thetrickstheyplay
So it's "I only like democracy when it goes my way."
MagicalMeows
Valid point but democracy also includes freedom of speech - in this case the right to complain without being against the principles of it
AGiantTransWoman
Now you know how the US feels about this years president, dicks.
SomethingAwesomer
Fucking god damn cheers! This drives me crazy living in Europe. People think it can't happen here. Well, good morning, folks! Here it is!
GoogleFucker
Well, the Apple didn't fall far from the tree.
Hayashima
You could always vote blank (too bad no one else will)
Saustino
This is always the best way to win an argument.. "You're opinion doesn't matter! You're going to die soon anyways!"
Thule
Those who lived the longest in the EU have had enough.
valkuma
Another way of looking at it, the people who never voted to join the EU are the most likely to suffer change aversion
toby3612
They also have less life experience to base their decision on
schneeeman
Absolutly true, wise words internet friend
SomethingAwesomer
Riiiight. I'm pretty sure it was the old folks who fucked us into a recession in 2007, too, and the young folks who dealt with the fallout.
MikeAracter
Criminals come in all ages.
cujo67
And far less time in the working world
hearthstoneaccount3
and will have less time in the working world due to automation taking over most industries. Times are a changing.
legitliar
Yup and 80% of over 80 year olds voted to leave
faiersdoerfer
Source? Sounds interesting ..
legitliar
I kind find a source on the internet but it was on the radio earlier... :/ sorry
ScootyPuffSr
Now add a column for voter turnout to see which age groups bothered to vote.
Lolikins
Exactly. Same thing happened @ local elections in Romania. Young voters couldn't be bothered to show up and then were angry about the result
Disto
This was pretty high on the turnout, including masses of young folk.
toby3612
43% youth turnout doesn't sound like masses. Bottom line is they didn't bother to vote and are now blaming everyone else
Disto
That statistic is from the general election. It is being frequently misused. There are no specific turnout numbers released yet.
DragonOnSteroids
While 72% is high, it still means more than 10mil people didn't vote. Considering the margin was just over 1mil this is not insignificant.
ShadowWuulf
This has been a fantastic day for the UK :)
Hayashima
For better or for worse, Brexit will be the example of what happens when a nation leaves the Union
Bentarmbenny
So the ones who have lived the longest in Eu want out and the ones who have never known different want to stay and this is a shame why ?
hearthstoneaccount3
Because the old people will never have to live with the decision so why did they get a say in the first place.
Bentarmbenny
Because they have experienced a Britain that's part of the eu and a Britain that isn't and regardless of how long you might have left......
Bentarmbenny
......to live you should be able to have a say in how your country is run .
hearthstoneaccount3
Disagree and we're never going to agree on this. Votes should be weighted heavily on age left to live.
Bentarmbenny
That's ridiculous ! "Thanks for all your hard work now shut your mouth and let the kids handle things " !?
philcollinsdrumbreakdown
those who've spent more time building the country they want to be know more about what they're talking about.
legitliar
'Make Britain great again' they said.. So we should take over India and make people slaves again? :/
madetheaccountjustforyou
Or parts of Africa, or Australia, or Ireland. You could wipe out the Tasmanians again except you didn't leave any from the first time.
LonleyOnesie
I wanted to see Britain try...we will cut its dick and feed it to our cows... wait...

Nahh, last time Britons where truely great they lived under Danelaw.

Last time, we did it by introducing cricket and subjugating them while they got their heads around the rules. Won't be so easy now

I guess no-one told them that the 'Great' part of 'Great Britain' is because we're the bigger of two islands.

I'd actually be a little happier if we made moves towards a new empire, as opposed to sitting in the North Atlantic shouting at Muslims 1/2
DickDastardly404
And generally being obnoxious and overblown about ourselves without any sort of reason to think we're deserving of the title "great". 2/2

PEEING
They voted for a future the youth did not want, and now we're forced to live with it.
kakkapyllypillu
I honestly don't think that a vote of a 21-year-old weights more than an old persons. Most 21s don't know jack shit about politics.
IGoogleItForYouSoYouDidntHaveToYouLazyFuck
Most old people don't know shit about politics either.
kakkapyllypillu
Point being that a vote from a 21-year-old can't and shouldn't weight more than one from an older person.
madawgg
Better move to scottland and wait for the next referendum
keybladers
I don't think Scotland will be allowed in the EU and thus they stay unless the EU is willing to take a negative member to give Brits a FU
ArcticPanda
I read somewhere Scotland is going to have another referendum to leave the UK so they can stay in the EU.. Same for Northern Ireland
AcidXenon
How dare people who have a right to vote, vote for what they think is right. God damnit.
ElBivo
Not that I agree with Brexit but with age comes experience and older folks see the ramifications of staying very differently than kids.
smaug777000
Can't you guys vote again in 10 years?
Schmedes
Well, the older and more mature people generally should make decisions, unless we want toddler votes to count.
hereforthensfwreddits
Yeah but in 10 years they won't be around, nor will they be the majority. You can vote to re-enter the Union.
RazgrizDarkheart
In all honesty older voters would be more affected because their pensions would become way less valuable...
Treblaine
You can have another vote in 20 years when they'll most likely be dead or too old to care, and now YOU will be voting against the youth.
derwulf
Pithy statements are great, but this ignores that percentage of each group that voted. Because if you didn't vote, don't bitch.
ChuckIHadADoubleBuurgerrr
Pretty well mirrors US politics as well.
caboops
And guess what, a lot of those young voters change sides as they are entering the working world and learning more.
bosstonez
This is extremely heart breaking. What a bunch of fuckwits.

I'm 19 and voted leave AMA

Where do you live? what's your educational background? are you an immigrant or child of immigrant? Are your fiends immigrants?
SamInbound
Dorset, good, no, no.
2shortplanks
Who did you vote for in the last election? Do you know who your MEP is? What's your opinion on the Human Rights Act?
SamInbound
Labour, I couldn't name you him but I know he's conservative, but if I heard his name I'd recognise it. Big fan of human rights
AcidXenon
Same here. I swear the remain party think the only words we know are "immigrant" and "leave". How dare someone to research into thing.
Thymesink
why....?
SamInbound
Because something needed to change. Otherwise things would keep getting worse. At least now that is a small chance things can improve.
Thorbane
And a larger chance things just get worse anyway.
SamInbound
Then at least we tried to change
SamInbound
Also I thought the remain campaign fucked it up. The scaremongering was crazy
pandalicious
What type of scaremongering? And what was different about the 'leave' campaign?
Gingerninji
24 and ditto. It wasn't really an immigration thing for me more that the EU had so much influence over our laws, policies i mean come on 1/2
Gingerninji
You can't sell a banana on its own or one that isn't curved right because of the EU. IMO its not fair someone living in another country 2/3
Gingerninji
Has so much power and think they know whats best for the country they don't reside in. Can't see America Russia or Auz being dictated to 3/4
Gingerninji
By a foriegn countries. Rant Over.
IShouldBeStudyingRightNowInsteadOfBrowsingImgur
Why?
SamInbound
Why what
SamInbound
Because something needed to change. Otherwise things would keep getting worse. At least now that is a small chance things can improve.
pandalicious
Elaborate on 'things getting worse' and 'things can improve'.
SamInbound
Hard to do with so little characters. Basically underfunding in all major public sectors and the billions we pay into the EU.
m0nkeyCm0nekydo
Because he/she cares about the future of their country. The same reason I will vote for Trump
iusedtokickfootballs
justyouraverageaussiegirl
Iol if you're voting for Trump you don't care about you're future, that man will run America into the ground
caboops
You're confusing president for king. We have things called checks and balances to prevent drastic swings either way quickly.
justyouraverageaussiegirl
So you're voting for someone who will make a fool of the nation while congress basically overruns everything? How great thou art, America.
madetheaccountjustforyou
They outnumber you and it's a democracy.
wrathbaby
That's called oppression by the majority and is why in the US we have a Democratic-Republic. It doesn't do it's job, but it's why we have it
ThatFellow
It's only a democracy when the people who want what I do are in majority. Everything else, it's unfair!
Ensano
That's one of the fundamental problems with democracy
MikeAracter
We agree...http://imgix.scout.com/132/1320840.jpg?w=620&h=413&fit=max
ajm1991
That everyone's vote matters equally? Men will make it to 79 and women 83 on average so they get more votes too right? And fat people less?
blainetog
That everyone votes for their own self-interests rather than the best interests of the country.
cslewisck
"Best interests of the country" is what the leave camp was voting for too. And I happen to think leaving is in the best interest of the U.K.
ajm1991
"A democracy will exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury"-Tytler
ajm1991
You hit the nail on the head.
madawgg
"In the best interest of the country" is literally a slogan used by Chinese and Soviets to silence the dissidents. Who defines the 1/
fistermatic5000
The majority doesn't matter? "Everybody's voice should be heard unless they disagree with me"
Ensano
Looks at the state of California for an example. 45% voted yes for marijuana so it didn't pass and 23% voted for one of the several judges
Ensano
And they were elected and given some serious powers.
malachiteopaljasperobsidian
Luckily you have the choice to move.
huckfinney
Yep, because everyone should just leave their home when one thing doesn't go their way. Jeez. Why is this a go-to?
malachiteopaljasperobsidian
Because if somebody hates something that much they'll find a way to leave. Or stay and fight if you care that much.
madetheaccountjustforyou
Yeah, the Many who outnumber your Few having a voice in their governance. So terrible.
Ensano
It's the uninformed having just an equal say as people who know what's going on. It's why elections have turned into popularity contests
Ensano
