I’m really not a terrible person.

Long story short... since she was in third grade my SIL has been on a mission to get my, now 16 year old, niece diagnosed with anything and everything to excuse her child’s horrible behavior. She’s been diagnosed with adhd, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, ODD, and autism. (Interesting to note several doctors have insisted she’s not autistic, but that’s the diagnosis that’s stuck for Mom)The child is rude and inconsiderate. She teases my 11 year old son relentlessly and neither of her parents say a word to her about her behavior. When I speak up she pitches a fit. Needless to say I keep contact with this part of the family minimal. She’s been at a very small private school for years but will be start at a large public high school next week. She fully expects to “run the place within a week.” Not only will the teachers not put up with her shit the other kids are going to tear her a new one. It sounds cruel, but it’s what she needs.

If she has an IEP the teachers will be working with her behaviors.

Maybe she does have some issues? Have you considered that? Have some sympathy asshole

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Poor kid

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

Kid and mom need a psychiatrist.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If she treats your son poorly, and your sister isn’t willing step in, then sadly I don’t see a place for them at your table.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

This. They should vehemently prevent her from getting anywhere near OP's son.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

As someone who works with kids who have mental health issues a lot of the ones you listed stem from unsteady home environments and trauma

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A lot of the kids I’ve worked with public school either gives them a reality check or makes it worse

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But you don't want her to be literally eaten alive, right? Because that might actually make you a terrible person.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

I got bullied so badly physically I was pulled from school during my final exams to recover and cops were involved, while you niece 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

sounds like she needs a tune up it should be her parents job as parents not school, that will ruin her and any shot of education she has.

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

If she does have bipolar/ borderline personality disorder, it’s not something to mess around with. Get help.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I feel you may be a little too invested in this.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 5

She's gonna be the coolest kid in school, you sound like a fkn nerd.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Go do some calculus, nerd.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have Borderline Personality Disorder and some of the traits you listed are very much a part of that. It’s hell living with it. 1/

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I also know that my behavior can be toxic. DBT therapy has helped a lot. People like you are no help though. Cut all ties. For her sake.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Maybe you should blame her parents and not a kid, who was raised that way, and will suffer ALOT in life because of it.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

For the record. I was a similar level of cunt as a child. With many Drs putting me on many medications. That did nothing

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Turned out it was thyroid cancer. Don't assume, because a dr was wrong. That the answer is she's a cunt.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Where does this attitude leave the children who have real mental health struggles under the bad behavior?

7 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

It fucks all of us equally - the kids whose struggles get written off and the adults who become stuck and too afraid to ask for help.

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

This so much this

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is your niece the cash me ousside girl?

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

No. Howboutdat?

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

To be fair, she could be in the spectrum a little.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

With all of those dx's, she should be getting treatment for most if not all of those conditions. Especially as a young child.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Quite christmasy spirit there , OP. Well done for a being a douchebag

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

One thing I've learned from working with disabled children is that being an asshole is a learned condition, not a medical one

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Barring some really rare conditions, agreed. ODD and CD are a thing afterall.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lots of young people need to go through that it seems. You can even see them here on imgur and tell they don't have real world experience.

7 years ago | Likes 152 Dislikes 14

I was a bully until middle school when it reversed. Now I’m an anxious bleeding heart empathic introvert.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Big fish in a small pond

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or she'll become the bully everybody fears & one of her victims will return to school with a suitcase full of weapons & kill everybody.

7 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 5

No way, zero tolerance totally works. Honest.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I bet you're fun to have at parties.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

This seems likely. Now I’m worried.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

If it happens, blame her parents for not parenting. Sounds like the girl needs the belt.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Driving a kid to suicide os much more likely. Don't worry the body count is likely to be lower.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Youre a liar OP. You dont just get handed a BPD, ODD and ADD diagnosis together.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What? I've seen collections like that. Terrible when they converge but a lot are related. Like ADD, ASS and schizophrenia.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

She’s been to many different doctors. These are over the course of the last 9 years.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

As someone with autism public school is the right thing as it shows you you can’t control shit

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 6

Also autistic, disagree. There other ways. Mentally scarring a diagnosed teenager doesn't seem the right way IMO. Kids are insanely cruel.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Also Autistic, I was bullied physically so badly for it that I had to be removed to recover because all the teachers made public note of it

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Public school was the worst thing for me. I would've sunk forever had I not been taken to a school where I actually had time to not be 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

2/3 miserable every single day cause of the entire student body hating me and the amount of schoolwork being too overwhelming. I admit that

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

3/3 it was very much a me problem, but private schools put me in an environment that understands what I had to deal with daily. It saved me

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

As someone with autism I agree with this.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Who the fuck says that for real

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

Shitheels that have never been on the receiving end of their own bullshit.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lets put a living raccoon in their pillows

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like my cousin. She's been diagnosed with sociopathy and NPD. I can't stand the little twit. Her mother is an antivaxxer/oils peddler

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

Diagnosed with sociopathy? That can explain truly horrific behavior. Lets hope she learns.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She was getting in shit for harassing her younger brother, and actually claimed "oh my God, I can't see!" to try to feign sudden illness.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Crazy asshole...

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You know what? Good. Now buy her a plane ticket to Africa. I hate antivaxers but I feel like it's an opportunity here.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Seriously... Seems like a decent plan.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It sounds cruel, and makes YOU sound like a jerk.

7 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 15

Cuck

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 21

Look what ya did you lil jerk

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

In what way? I’m a jerk for thinking a teenager needs to know the way she treats people is inappropriate?

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 28

For gleefully revelling in a child being harmed. Its gross. Rather than see her get help you'd rather see her go through hell

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 9

School might not teach her that. Other kids who are just as horrible could latch onto her and might reinforce her behavior.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

What if she does have mental issues and you're a bad human being?

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 15

Cuck

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 22

Cluck

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You can have mental health issues/disabilities and still be an asshole. It comes down to knowing right from wrong and by 16 you usually do.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Unless there's literally a mental health issue interfering with that directly. Or the ability for impulse control etc.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I’ve been watching this unfold since she was a toddler. I am an ESE teacher who works with kids who have autism all the time. That said

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 19

I am likely a terrible person for reasons unrelated to this post.

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 17

Yeah that kitten did nothing wrong :(

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe you.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Im with you. My brother was babied by our parents because of how smart he is. Never got plunged into normal society. Now hes an awkward jerk

7 years ago | Likes 596 Dislikes 13

Would you rather he be a drop out with a record? Seriously, some of my students are in that sinking boat

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why not neither?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a great plan, but if I go off my students who just get in trouble over and over, some maybe would do bette in a dif environment.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Makes sense. Keep up the good work dude.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's fucked up. If he is smart, he would need more discipline and guidance than others. He is the one who had to cope with stupid society

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Hah! I was "the smart one

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in my family and my mom showered me with discipline because I had to cope with all the stupid people, family included. It was "homework 1/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and perseverance" and I managed to cope... decently? Your comment made me laugh.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a shame. That's gotta be hard for him. It's hard to shake the effects of parenting in those years when you're building your self worth

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like my cousin will turn out this way. Except he’s not a jerk. Just babied like crazy. He’s 14 and my aunt treats him like he’s 6.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In what way? Does she feed him?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not enough characters. He’s a small kid since he was sick all the time when he was little so she can still carry him around somewhat

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Adam?

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I was always the smart kid in the family (per my parents words) so I never really had to work for anything. Now that I do, it sucks ass.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Same. By stroke of luck I found a job (restaurant) where intelligence and hard work are revered and the managers are so good at 1/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

distinguishing the two and praising only the hard work part. The 4 years I've been there have really shaped me.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some folk need a generous helping of “knock off the bullshit.” But some parents don’t drop the hammer.

7 years ago | Likes 1113 Dislikes 12

If she has ODD then tough love will not work. These people feed of confrontation.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

CHANCLA. Kids these days need CHANCLA in their lives. Even some parents deserve a CHANCLA in their face once in a while

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Boundaries. If parents don’t give them, kids will keeeeeep trying to find them in new and horrible ways. Say it with me folks. “No.”

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My nephew has Asperger’s but sometimes he uses it as an excuse to be a rude, stubborn shit. Has his mom jump for every bullshit quirk.

7 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

I sometimes can't help but think "it's because of my Asperger's" and it really takes away a part of who i am, sometimes i wish i 1/?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2/? Didn't know i had it so i would still be able to look for things to better about myself without thinking maybe it's because of the ASD

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It’s probably safe to assume the answer is “Yes, most likely my ASD has at least a little effect on everything I do.”

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And just give an effort towards your own continued improvement, regardless of that consideration.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

When I was a kid, I tried pulling that shit. Didn't get me anywhere. Every time I ever mentioned it as a young adult, I severely regretted.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

We had treatment for this back when I was a kid.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 12

Shame its considered child abuse now.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 17

“30 day free trial” lmfao

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My chaotic brother used to pick fights with my dad for as long as I can remember. Some people just don’t give a shit.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Many people can't see the difference between a spanking vs beating up a child. It blows my mind.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There is also the CHANCLA alternative to discipline

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

not the CHANCLA; LA CHANCLA!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Missing a reference to Jumper Cables...

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Most professionals don't just hand out diagnoses without a reason. Your niece sounds like a troubled kid. I hope that HS is helpful to her.

7 years ago | Likes 418 Dislikes 13

Yeah, even if it's not all real sounds like there's something going on

7 years ago | Likes 132 Dislikes 0

It took me way to long to find a supportive comment! The parents are probably tired and want to avoid a meltdown. Being a parent is hard

7 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 8

It's far more than hard. But that's not an excuse to get a child diagnosed with that many issues and on medication when they need a parent.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I’ve had one doctor try and diagnose me with mitral valve prolapse without any testing done. Another doctor after 20 min try to say

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

That I’m bipolar (I absolutely am not nor have anything in my medical history to suggest otherwise), etc. It absolutely does happen.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Oh, and I don’t have mitral valve prolapse. I have PVC’s and the nitro that kook wanted to prescribe me would’ve been horrible for me.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If you shop enough you can get any diagnosis

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

Yeah she’s still young. Bullying can cause some permanent harm.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Most, sure. But if 20 doctors say 'fine, just badly behaved' and the parents listen to the one that says 'adhd'...

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's just an excuse for bad parenting. That "oh, don't mind him. He has ect" I've met alot of parents like that in my time being a parent.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My sister in law is bipolar but doesnt take her meds, bipolar disorder is a frightening thing to deal with, you just never know where the

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mania or depression will take them. She has a very high opinion of herself while manic, but tried to kill herself when she crashed into

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Depression. Kid could be a brat, but I would consider taking her to behavioral specialists.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thats if they are actually diagnosing her. Mom could be lying to excuse guilt/justify doing very little.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

....which is why mommy had to doctor shop for one willing to?

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 13

Many people "doctor shop" to find help that works.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Agreed, but if you go to tons of professionals who come to the same conclusion and fixate on the ONE who gives you the label you want? ....

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I mean, you know the difference between finding a doctor that works and window shopping until you find a dissenting opinion you like, right?

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

If multiple doctors have insisted the kid isn't autistic, I tend to wonder if they ever actually got that diagnosis in the first place or /1

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If the mother is making it up or if an irresponsible GP just threw it out there as a suggestion to get investigated /2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And mum has now taken that as a 'diagnosis'. /3

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

When my sister was that age, the doctor handed my parents a book on handling strong willed kids and said just hit her with it :)

I was a nightmare as a 3yo but ended up with a doctorate, married, lots of good friends. Mom says w/o her tough love I’d prob be in jail

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I mean, they are 3. They aren't exactly well developed yet in general, so give it a bit of time before worrying?

She's been receiving services for over a year. She's had like 6 dif evals. Every professional that has evaluated her has been worried

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Girls can be hard to diagnose. My 18 yr old coasted through school. Good grades, good behaviour. She shutsdown in public and has meltdowns..

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At home. So teachers didn't see it. She refuses social interactions. So cant get her to go see anybody. Anxiety and depression dont help.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But we are working through it. She has friends online now. Life is improving.
