I've never heard of the idea that their shit made it harder to climb, don't know if I believe that. But it was a form of conspicuous consumption. The more shit that coated the walls, the more apparent it was that you have a lot to eat. It was a form of advertised wealth and power, which many "castles", especially domiciles that were not true militarized fortifications, themselves symbolized. Keep power by demonstrating power. And poop was power.
To those who don't know, it's an incident where a large group of noble men gathered for Hoftag, court date, conducted by King Henry VI.
Due to the weight of the people, the floor collapsed and almost everyone fell down into the pit below where all the human waste from the toilets was collected.
Approximately 60 attendees died either from the fall or drowned in the human feces. Henry VI and Archbishop Conrad were saved because they were sitting in a stone window alcove when the floor collapsed.
Reminder that before these were even built many other cultures (including in Africa and South America) had multistory buildings with flowing water and flush toilets.
Actually, the Artemis toilet is more lie a garderobe than you might think, since feces is pulled away by a fan. Instead of a water closet, it's an air closet. There is also such a thing as an earth closet (basically, a human-rated catbox), but if there is a fire closet, I don't want to know about it.
Because you’d think intuitively that putting a big hole in your walls just to increase hygiene would make the defences weaker - but ironically it made them stronger in that spot?

As far as medieval toilet factoids go, I think I prefer the Erfurt Latrine Disaster.

What, you don't have it in you to take your monthly bathtime without soap, and maybe have to miss it if you're too busy?

I doubt they were called garderobe, which literally means wardrobe.

Fun fact, the reason why ship's toilets are called the "head" is because these holes were at the front of the ship near the figurehead.

*fires an arrow up at the garderobe hole* Huh, maybe this is why some people worry about something coming out of the toilet...
