You don't slow down when you get old. You get old when you slow down. Before I showed up in my office today, I had already biked several miles and spent about half an hour on roller skates. Yeah, I'm a little creaky, but I'm going to keep on going. And my DOB ends in 50. My dad used rollerblades into his 90s. I hope to follow his example.
Not even halfway there, just above the age where you no longer get free meals. Need to make this a habit. I don't want to spend all my waking hours on exercise and demanding activities, no, but enough that I on occasion can, for as long as possible. So lots of regular habits to form. Terrified of slowing down only to layer find out I can't speed up again...
I mostly just do fun stuff to stay active. No treadmills for me, and I don't go to gyms anymore. Biking, skating, rollerblading, swimming, hiking, and using the stairs instead of the elevator is what keeps me going. I also enjoy ballroom dancing, which is low key exercise but it keeps me on my feet and moving, as well as providing social contact.
I'm not quite 40 but my body has already started doing things like hurting itself when I sit in certain positions for more than a couple hours which I think is pretty rude.
You got this! Follow drs advice, do physiotherapy, dont overdo it, but also actually do more than they prescribe, try to learn the difference between ārecovery painā and āinjury painā, recovery can hurt but its to get back on track, and injury pain is actually damaging yourself again. Hope you do well!
I'm a fair bit older than that. I defo get more injuries than i did when i was in the 20ies. 30ies was nonestop injuries because i thought i still was 20. In my 40ies i've learned to have a little respect for my aging body, but i can also comfortably run a halfmarathon or go paddeling 8 hours without break. I can even get out of the chair without groaning for the most part. I feel most of those i've known that declines also have been a lot less pro-active about keeping somewhat in shape
Yeah, in 85 I was trying to decide whether to take advanced or regular physics for senior year. (Tried regular, it was a snore, switched to advanced. Struggled but made it through okay). And I make sounds when I go up stairs now. Crack like a glow stick? No. I shatter like a windshield.
I used to do this until I learned recently that it is horrible for your kidneys and was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney failure. Now I mainline acetaminophen because my liver can heal itself faster.
As bodies age, their ability to recover from injuries - including minor, normal wear and tear throughout the day - decreases. People typically gain weight over the years as well (1-5 lbs a year isn't noticeable until 20 years go by and you're 30lbs heavier) which puts strain on backs, knees, feet. For a number of reasons people tend to be less active in their 40's than their 20's, which reduces things like core strength and flexibility. All that adds up to an increase in aches and pains.
Plus the damned arthritis. I'm sure for people with easy access to healthcare the 40's generally aren't considered 'bad' barring major disfiguring injuries or severely debilitating conditions, but for Americans 30-35 is about when the warranty wears out and we stop taking the meatsuit to the mechanic. They're gonna charge us a fortune to tell us the only 'fix' they have will cost an additional fortune and probably has like rat poison in it. I can ache with my ibu at home for 10 bucks a week.
I'm secretly hoping that daguq is actually old and is just lucky enough not to have any of those issues because if they're young and don't know what aging is?......God our education system sucks.....
meanwhile im 37(? quit caring of age in my 20's so i have calculate it when need recall it) and still fine. Either 40's magically goes off a sheer cliff edge or im lucky.
I remember a comic book where I could not help thinking it had to have been written by a twenty something because it kept going about how old and rickety the FORTY YEAR OLD protagonist felt.
It's this perspective that has me trying to do my best to appreciate every age I am - I'd rather be 20 than 40, but I'm sure when I'm 60 I'll be looking fondly at my 40's, and when I'm 80 I'll wish I could go back to my 60's. Better to savor things now than to look back with regret at not taking advantage of my relative health and ability.
Better than me, at 44 I'm typing this having woken myself SPECIFICALLY with pain, Charlie horsing my leg from over stretching it in my sleep, something that happens biweekly despite profuse water drinking

Same. Luckily avoided most major injuries, but pieces are going bad and it's far easier for fitness to slide and harder to keep it up.
