I tried to fill out a job application. I had to talk to a chatbot to get my name, email, phone number and a few other questions. Like. Just give me the fucking form.
And after all of that, it emailed a link to the application(...where of course I have to upload my resume *and* fill out all the information that you know, is *on* my resume of course)
I'm doing all this and knowing I'll never hear from them again. Yay.

Company I work for has purchased several software suites that are 'powered by AI', Upper management purchased these suites without any involvement from anyone from IT. Why, because it was to replace a number of the staff, which they fired before the ink was dry on the contracts they signed for these packages. They weren't able to replace anyone with any of these and just dumped the extra work on those that remained.

I tried using AI instead of the usual formula I used to determine roof gutter and downspout sizes required for a 100 year storm. The answer seemed right, but just to check it I then asked for sizing for a 500 year storm… It suggested smaller gutter and downspouts. I input a 1000 year storm and it sized the gutter and downspouts even smaller still.

Except this case would be a complicated math problem that the interviewer doesn't actually know the answer to cause it's really just a "see how you think" question and the interviewee gives a very detailed and plausible (but is wrong in important ways) explanation of how they arrived at their answer. The interviewer has no idea the explanation and the answer are wrong since they don't really know the subject matter.

Or they do know how to arrive at the answer but are asking the question because apparently this guy is much faster at solving it. So in the end needs to take more time to not only ask the question in the first place and get the guys answer but now has to double-check that it's correct by solving it anyway.

This app we use at work gives us a place to document the details of the software we're going to build. It takes a lot of time with the customers to figure out and document what these this software will need to do. This fucking app has a new button where it will somehow generate this information with AI. I haven't pressed it yet but there's no way it'll produce anything useful, and it's one of those things where if it's even slightly wrong, it's worthless. I'm sure it was a very expensive button.

Remember the early days of the Internet? Everyone was throwing spaghetti at the wall with startup promises that got so much VC money... where 9 out of 10 of these companies crashed and burned.
It's like they're doing the same thing with AI. Throwing it at everything, seeing what sticks. But even what sticks... is flawed. It's useful at digging up data, but composing it into a smart document that is logically cohesive and accurate... rarely happens.

There are practical applications of AI algorithms, but not everything has to be an LLM.

These comments always bother me as it is still, on your computer but also backed up. Screw AI and recall but I love using OneDrive to backup my documents folder and desktop, no pictures or movies. You only get 5gb but you can invite temp emails and get yourself 500mb per. I got mine to 8gb and more than I need. Nice thing is if you have folks who save everything to their documents folder, most their shit is backed up. Also shutup10 works on windows11

AI artists are not artists, but the quote in the picture is still nonsense. We already automated both of those jobs; the dishwasher & washing machine. The only human interaction left in them is to load/unload the machines that do the rest of the job for us, and that's not something that AI, especially generative AI, can resolve. That's an issue for generalized robotics, which is a whole different field of tech.

Right, and then add in the invention of the dryer; beforehand you could only dry your clothes on days where the weather was good because the standard practice was to hang them on a line between two poles outside. It could take hours to dry that way. If it was raining all week, you weren't getting laundry done. Then the dryer was invented and suddenly you could dry any load in around an hour no matter the weather.

I get it, but I have never heard it expressed that way. I don’t hear people saying that AI is the same as making art. I think most people realize that it’s entirely different much like taking a picture with a camera is different than painting that same scene. That said, 99% of what is called AI art is pure garbage, a kin to someone’s lazy photographs on a crappy camera.

My company has gone all in and my job has become about 75% more depressing since that happened. Not entirely for that reason, I have a lot of other complaints too. Basically, our corporate culture has dramatically transformed over the last few years and... I am waiting to see the results of some projects before I make any rash decisions. Might want to change industries, but I don't have any wonderful alternatives in mind either. I paid my dues already, as it were. Ugh.

i get that shuffle i based off rng but computers don't really do random, but windows shuffle is soooo bad. i have30,000 songs and it literally plays the same 50-100 songs over and over again.
they should just connect a pc to document like a cesium atom decaying and base their algorithms off that, kinda like how they did with the lottery numbers, and then use that like the world time zones thing where pcs dial into that server to grab their baseline and make calculations.. like OTP based onclock

I am still fascinated by the 3d emulation on my parents tv. Did I use it out of novelty maybe 3 times? Yes. Did my parents ever use it? No. So money spent for a feature not used and unknown to the user, and consequently not wanted by the user.

I have a 3D TV, because I bought it in the year when that's all you could get. And for animates films like the Lego Movie, it's fantastic. So while it doesn't get much use, it's going to be a shame when it gets replaced.

It's both. It is a fad and people are throwing everything AI (even other ML that has been around for ages) at the wall and seeing what sticks. But some of that will stick well and hang about and become a refined useful toolset. I love it for the simple case of giving me the right combination of commands from Linux man pages for things I rarely use.

Depends on what you use it for. I use ChatGPT regularly as a better search engine. It functions really well for finding information and summarizing it. In contrast, I’ve never used VR, because it doesn’t seem to add anything to me life, so I’m not sure where the comparison is.
