Quote:
At least 11 large companies—including Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, and Oracle—are cutting ties with law firms that caved to President Trump’s threats of political retribution, according to The Wall Street Journal.
General counsels for multiple companies told the Journal that the law firms’ willingness to cut deals with the president, rather than stand up for themselves, greatly eroded their confidence in the ability of those firms to represent them in court or in high-pressure negotiations.
Massive law firms that work on lucrative contracts, like Paul, Weiss, Kirkland & Ellis, and others, struck deals with the Trump administration after he aimed six executive orders at them, removing clearances, building access, and government contracts from firms he thought were attacking him. The law firms capitulated, offering billions of pro bono work to the Trump administration, allegedly in the name of protecting their clients and their contracts.
But multiple lawyers at each firm think that their leadership should’ve put up a tougher fight. One staffer told the Journal she felt “physically ill” upon hearing of Paul, Weiss’s sellout to Trump. Some younger lawyers have even quit over these deals, as one associate at Simpson Thacher said in his exit email that he would not “sleepwalk toward authoritarianism.”
The firms that decided to strike back did end up losing clients but kept some of their principles intact. Jenner & Block declared in a statement that folding to the Trump administration would require “compromising our ability to zealously advocate for all of our clients and capitulating to unconstitutional government coercion, which is simply not in our DNA.”

Oracle cutting ties with lawyers? Is hell preparing for winter olympics?
MentalUproar
You will never get my approval for literally anything Oracle does.

This may be self-interest on the end of all these companies, but I hope these cowardly, spineless law firms go under. They deserve it.
xizar
I mean... cool, but it would be really nice if they'd cut ties with Palantir, too.
zoeytg
Mmmm, didn't we watch all the heads of AI projects, Microsofts included had a big ol glad handing session with Trump. I'm not sure I buy they suddenly got a spine, or morals, or ethics.

Isn't all work for trump pro bono? He doesn't pay shit

Member when companies took a stand agaisnt trump after the coop? Yeah... then they donated to his election fund.

So Microsoft is dancing on both sides of the sword?

Some of those companies like Microsoft and Oracle are huge cunts in their own right, but not as big as the cunts who capitulated to Agent Orange.
Leithoa
Y'all could have done this a year ago, but no. You hedged your bets & gave the GQP money.
EroticZombiePants
Oh, they are still cool with Trump. They just don't trust that the law firms who caved to Trump would mercilessly crush whoever they want them to anymore.
MadmanSprinkles
Ayo, fuck Oracle tho
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
Microsoft donated $1 million to trump's inauguration fund earlier this year (plus half a million in 2017). Let's keep that in the back of the public consciousness. MS, Google and other tech giants with way too much global influence all need to be smashed into a hundred little companies when this nightmare is over.

Let's not pretend that Bill Gates isn't a lifelong thief just like Donald Trump.

Whats crazy is its not like these law firms were super pro trump or something. They caved to trump after He went after them for being involved in suing him. So Its not like a bunch of right wingers are going to want to do business with them because they are buddy buddy with trump. Rather they gotta do hundreds of millions worth of free legal work for trump while facing notable drop off in clients. Wouldnt be surprised if some of those companies go under.
Bojovnik84
We need a list of firms that caved. I work for a firm that hasn't been put in the position of having to choose yet, but I've already heard directly from our top brass that if it came to it, we wouldn't bend the knee. The firms that did, shouldn't get any business going forward, because it is clear that they choose money over the rule of law.
Rongeong
I hate to break it to you buddy but all law firms chose money over rule of law. That's why they make so much money trying to protect mcdonalds after burning a woman's vagina shut or argue that an iphone blowing up in someone's pocket and damaging the screen voids the warranty. The firms that stood their ground did so because they knew that caving would cost them their clients. They know that having their clients trust them is more profitable than giving the government whatever they want.

They didn't do it for being against fascist.
They're protecting themselves.
Law firms exist to protect these companies against government regulation etc.
If they can be threatened by executive to do what's asked, they can't protect these firms anymore.
Cutting ties is a way to say: we don't pay you for doing what our enemies ask...
aducksayswhat
It's interesting how companies get personified (by actual people) when they're doing something they like or dislike, or if it aligns with what they want. Also how the company presents the news, whether it's a faceless press release, some blog, "leaks", interviews or putting some spokesperson on a press tour. Chances are they didn't change, that's just what gets them more money or security today
ElroydIsGone
Yeah, I guess the law firm's argument is like "Hey, the admin threatens you? We're buddy-buddy with them, we might be able to put in a good word for you..." and their former be clients like "Nah, thanks, Trump admin only has useful, disposable idiots, you help jack shit".
EternallyIgnorant
I made a comment about this, but I noted that they ARENT buddy buddy with trump. Its not like they are super right wing and volunteered to help Trump. They were on his shit list and he punked them into giving him a free billion dollars and they folded immediately.

I think companies should stand up against the orange turd BUT I have no respect for the ethics of any of these companies So. WGAS?
Elkarlo77
Microsoft and Oracle are losing money thanks to those law firms advice right now. They have recovered but thanks to kneeling in to Trump they are loosing the EU Market right now. They are atm finding out that they need to stand up against trump or lose 30% of their Market.
donsterkay
What makes you think its due to "law firms advice"? I think its that neither has added any new products to the mix that are any better than those that existed 5 years ago. Bing? Skype? I've never met anyone in business that was happy with Oracle.
canadianreserve
Ya it's not altruism, but self interest mostly. Can't have a firm representing you against the government if the firm has already shown it's boot licking stance. That said, many lawyers are anti establishment and would find this stance unpalatable.
unluckyandbored
And how much money did those companies donate to Trump's campaign?
YOU WANTED THIS.

Well..yeah. Nobody wants unreliable legal representation...or unreliable trading partners, or unreliable allies, or an unreliable economy...
Margrave9000
They should start refusing services to clients supporting tRump or other rightwing organizations and individual actors.
You provide financial services for Ben Shapiro? Good, now all your Oracle licenses are revoked, hope you got your file cabinets at hand and arranged paper shipments.
ElroydIsGone
I'm afraid they don't do it due to some political stance, but simply for business reasons: You hire laywers to fight legal battles for you, and when you have to expect a government to become increasingly hostile towards everyone, you don't want to hire fighters who already bent the knee for that potential enemy.
gesel
And everybody knows that. So why is the President so actively destroying the American reputation for stability and reliability. Who benefits from the destruction of America's reputation, alliances, leadership in global organizations, and global humanitarian leadership? Not America's (former) allies. Not America.
Where the benefit accrues to, the leadership generating the benefit flows from.

Anyone that caves will cave again. You can never trust traitors, even if they are betraying your enemy
ElbowDeepInAPoliceState
Demanding blind, unflinching loyalty out of people is... not exactly a good thing.
somerandomusernamebecauseididntlikemyoldone
No one is asking for blind unflinching loyalty, if anything that's part of what has lead to the current state of affairs. However if trust and responsibility is placed in someone based on an elected position, a certification, code of ethics, past deeds, etc. and they betray that with no reason beyond personal greed, then there is no longer any trust. They don't necessarily have to be cast out, but their image/position/responsibilities shouldn't be maintained. It shows where their priorities are.
ElbowDeepInAPoliceState
But would you trust people who betray the trust and values and ethics of their employers/organization/profession/gov't/country/etc? Whistle-blowers, or soldiers or law enforcement who refuse to carry out illegal orders, or any other thing of the sort. I agree that the likes of those who kowtowed to trump are untrustworthy and betrayed quite a lot of things in doing so; but betrayal in and of itself does not necessarily make one universally unworthy of trust. It's contextual.
