I half expected the lightning to reveal a siren head slowly moving in the background

The thing that you will never appreciate about a tornado until you're next to one is just how loud it is. Comparing it to standing next to a freight train is very accurate.
(One missed my house by about 200 yards 10 years ago. I thought we were just having bad thunderstorms. I stuck my head out the door, heard that, and moped off to the basement at full sprint)

that's absolutely horrific https://media4.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPWE1NzM3M2U1OHc3N2h1ajhycnFkMG53NDh0ZGVjd3h1NjlreGZseHJ4eTdiNzFmcSZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/bSEkPdQfsSHCMYn7fD/200w.webp

Remember when conservatives used to say it was god sending the naturals disasters to punish 'the gays'?
So I guess God has had enough of the MAGAts?
redbear1999
God is punishing the sinners! God reminding sinners that he controls the weather. Not some point democrat.

Yeah I remember, man that was way back, how long has it been since people have prayed away the gay from the oval office? /gallery/evangelical-church-urges-trump-admin-to-execute-lgbtq-americans-this-is-horrifying-Y83fPTc

What's shown in the video isn't actually a tornado. It's a wall cloud. Notice how there is zero rotation. Also note how you can see underneath it. An EF3 tornado would touch the ground with a debris could.
iConfirmAnythingAndEverything
This is a confirmed tornado. Yes its a wall cloud, with an associated ef3 tornado.
kahlas
The tornado is to the east of the wall cloud actually. There are two photons on the NWS page for this storm that show the EF3 tornado clearly and that it wasn't directly connected to the mesocyclone. Scroll to the bottom to see them. https://www.weather.gov/fgf/2025_06_20_Summary
AlcoholSugarSaltFat
Wall clouds (mesocyclones) rotate. There was an EF3 beneath this wall cloud that killed 3 people.

@OP - I have to apologize. My stupid brain made me think the sirens were a very long intro to a song you put over the video to enhance the suspense. (It reminded me of the beginning of "Outro" by M83 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY1BfWQWqDk ). I called you stupid for doing it. I was mad. I wanted to hear the real video. Then it dawned on me. Its me. I am stupid. I'm sorry. +1

VibratingNipples
Get this, that was only an EF-3+ tornado
mercyPandaRunner
1. EF scale is measured by the aftermath. So a really strong tornado that just mows some empty fields is not going to get as high a score than a weaker one that goes for a stroll through the suburbs.
2. What you see is the cloud that the tornado sprouts out of at the bottom. That's not a giant tornado wall. The tornado itself is much smaller and somewhere blocked from vision behind the buildings. And therefore, a safe distance away in that moment.
DorkJedi
I saw the f5 that ripped through OKC. the mind cannot grasp how big and destructive it is, even while looking at it.
Isorikk
While I'm sure a tornado was somewhere around there, it's not pictured in this video lol

Definitely a 9 on the "Oh fuck"-ometer.

I came somewhat close to driving into this storm. I was headed to north-central North Dakota for a funeral and was about an hour out of Fargo when I stopped for gas. A friend of mine who lives near Fargo texted me a screenshot of the “get the hell in the basement right now” warning she’d just gotten and told me to maybe stop where I was for the night. I-29 north of Fargo was a mess of blown-over semis, highway signs and crumpled tin roofs.
glovelyday
This is scary shit.
GemsAreOutrageousTrulyTrulyTrulyOutrageous
Fucking nightmare fuel. It'd go so fucking hard in a video game or a TTRPG if you could describe it properly.

A reminder of how tiny we are in the universe.
DexPumpkinGod
I agree, and our whole PLANET is tiny in the universe
SeanBeanJovi
This shit is why I prefer earthquake country. I don't want to see the clouds of death coming for me. And if my house is destroyed, I prefer it if it ends up in one big pile instead of scattered across the countryside.
CanadianLadyMoose
At least if my home collapsed on me it's an easy burial. Who knows who my corpse (or pieces of it) would traumatize after I'm torn to smithereens by everything else the wind picked up. Don't need my ankle bones hitting anyone's windshields.
SeanBeanJovi
Right??
ArtSparkle
Worst blowjob ever
OMGamIImguringCorrectly
I mean that giant thing is not the tornado, that's a wall cloud. If there's a tornado, it's under that. Cool video, tho.
BurlRavenscroft
Ok I won’t be piss shit scared then?
mercyPandaRunner
It better do. Just in a "better watch it if it comes this direction in a couple of minutes" way than in an immediate "Run to the basement NOW!" way.
mmmurppp
This banter is why I appreciate Imgur people. Thank you for the insight.
SonicColonic
I'm not sure you know what banter means...
seanmccorkle
I would have guessed it was a mesocyclone that spawned a tornado.
scottduyn77
Thanks, that makes me feel a whole lot safer!
mercyPandaRunner
If there was a tornado close enough to appear that big, you'd hear the infamous "freight train" sound as loud or louder than the siren.
mercyPandaRunner
I saw a few videos where people are driving down a highway at night and either a lightening or a power converter flashing reveals a tornado that was hidden in the darkness. Super duper scary situation.
mercyPandaRunner
Here ya go. Stuff for nightmares.

CrisprCAS
The tornado was a mile wide.
OMGamIImguringCorrectly
Similarly, that wall cloud is about 6 miles wide and about a mile tall. The tornado is at its center underneath it and behind the trees obscuring it in this video. You can see the bottom of the wall cloud to the left near the bottom of the defined side of it.
phobosorbust
can also see lightning flashes under the cloud layer
if that cloud was the tornado there'd be a debris field in that area
still 100% a 'seek shelter' moment when you see one that tall and well-formed
ChallengerDeep
Some daylight images of that kind of beast here https://stormandsky.com/04-5-28 - that thing looks really, really well formed though.
AngurProne
As a Midwester, yes. We go outside and watch tornadoes. If you can see it move, it probably won't come for you. If you can't tell if it's moving, take cover. We see them so often that it's not always a problem. I know you others think this is psychotic, but no. We watch them all the time.
AngurProne
When I was a call center rep, I thought the Hurricane people were crazy. Apparently, nope. NWS tells them days ahead. They think tornadoes are nuts BC no heads up. We are just used to the scramble(take shelter). Also sometimes I can't be bothered. Maybe my family claims the policy, probably not
