I am a crumbly old maths supply teacher and the kids at my previous school, with my enthusiastic agreement, stickered my laptop with ally, trans-ally and shiny stuff. Every time I teach a class in a new school i flip that laptop open on my desk so the stickers are very visible, so kids know, without me singling them out, that I am safe and supportive.

Although it made me bawl my eyes out - reminded me of a similar situation with a friend, without the happy ending. He was abused by his dad, my parents tried to adopt him, his parent sent him to a youth facility instead. We both cried as the cops led him away from our house. Heard he got pulled into a criminal life at the facility - dead from gang violence only a few years later :'(

My best friend of the last 18 years is gay. He didn't tell me for the first 4 years I knew him, and even then, I only found out because he forgot to scrub his history on the laptop we shared. Had to confront him and assure him that it didn't matter that he was gay, that he would always be my best friend.

When I was a kid, my godfather was a man my folks had known for a long time, who was gay. His apartment in the city was amazing... he had dozens and dozens of fun little sculptures, some animated toys, some whirligigs, all kinds of cool shit. I never really thought about how lonely he was or why all of the gay people knew had died over the years; that was something I caught later. But at the time, I was a mere child of, I don't know, 6 or 7 maybe, and when we went to see him I was always 1/2

mystified by his place. It was cool, and I wanted an apartment just like it with gizmos everywhere. But one time as we were leaving, I asked my mom if it was okay I went there. We were in the elevator and she asked me what I meant, and I sheepishly asked, "Well, he's gay... is it safe for me?" I was a tiny, young little child, I didn't know anything, and my folks were very open... there was no clear homophobia around me but somehow I had picked it up, and I didn't even know it. THAT'S why. 2/2
