Just guessing this is just more of the spread of surveillance. “Grocery Outlet is an affordable grocer that caters to lower-income consumers, who may not have another option,” added Hepner. “There is a coercive element to this data collection, because some people cannot simply choose to not go to the grocery store.” https://missionlocal.org/2026/07/sf-grocery-outlet-facial-recognition/
TheFastpaws
I'm just so tired of it all.
toogoodtomiss
Plus these stores are often in food deserts- there aren’t any options.
LittleChickadee
How is a store called "Grocery Outlet" not a joke on the Simpsons and actually a real place?!
Trimule
Camera stuff aside, contrary to some opinions here, as to prices, they are a great place to shop. Some of their stuff is kind of second rate (Fresh fruit and veg) but they often have major brand name products for major discount and many of their generics are excellent quality at low prices. I'm a "shopper" and usually go through GO before going to Kroger.
PeeterGrant
As much as the surveillance state sickens me, those fast expiring foods at Grocery Outlet would probably sicken me quicker.
Arenlor
One more reason that they're terrifying. I'm counting the puppets. Mostly the puppets actually.
unluckyandbored
Ban corporate surveillance.
azazyel
Bet they have one of these in the parking lot too
kaijuuGold
thats fucked up i wonder if that made the store close down
Resistance1000
Madison Square Garden also uses them, so if you went to any games or concerts there, I hope you smiled for the cameras. /s Since it's owned by the same asshole, I bet the Sphere in Las Vegas uses them, too
OregonComputerGuy
That company has higher prices than winco, so I rarely buy anything there anyway
FeloniousMonk13
Guys remember when we all wore face masks for a while there? Yeah I liked those for this reason also. Noone talks about this enough I think.
lezgetfukkinreal
Simple we need to start making realistic masks of our Republican Congress persons and muck shit up a bit
VodkaReindeer
Sounds like Alice York could afford to shop elsewhere. And the only commenter over on that site discovered the power of face masks.
DasBeaker
Huh… odd the one near me closed down very suddenly.
ButtscratchMcPherson
I ****ing loved Grocery Outlet in Nevada. Favorite grocery store, shame there's none in Virginia. (ignoring the facial rec of course)
EmperorCartagia
Reading the story linked, I don't have a problem with this, it's one store basically digitizing its ban list& enforcement. That's not a biggie to me.
Now, if it ends up being something shared among multiple companies or industries all operating one big list, that's a problem, that could effectively block someone from participating in commerce, which is a death sentence in a largely capitalist economy.
We need good laws & regulations and we need them now, before it's a problem.
jtwood
Shit like this is why government oversight that favors the people of their country instead of the corporations is so important
Grimlinnan
It should go the way of the warehouse that did not pay a living wage. No more nazi surveillance.
CelestialSea
You can get "celebrity" face masks (basically a printed nylon full face covering) for under $5... Just sayin'.
spontaneous9
“without compromising personal privacy or data integrity.” yeah right.
So there's a real easy fix to this. Mask up if you wish to maintain your personal privacy. Mask wearing should be the normal protocol for anyone who has a cough or a runny nose in public anyway, like they do in Japan. There's no reason it has to be only under pandemic conditions.
I still wear a neck gaiter every time I leave the house b/c I have adult-onset asthma. When I hear someone cough, I just pull it up over my nose.
ROGUEdenied
time for this
Kablooeeey
Another reason I never stopped wearing a mask in public. I never expect to leave the house without a mask again. Sad "free" country where we are tracked and surveilled constantly everywhere.
datphone777365
Thats assuming its only going to beusing facial data. Anything they record can in theory be used later to train or act on with different tech.
The vid with your face also has the rest of your morphology.
YeahFineSure
My local grocery store just permanently shut one of its entrances (the once closest to my office) and started locking products in cabinets due to theft (mostly high school kids). I'm not sure I'd mind having my face scanned if it helped cut down on the theft.
KingdomsCrown
And how does the company's losses due to theft effect you personally?
YeahFineSure
Personally it adds time and frustration to my grocery shopping. I also see the frustration on the faces of the employees when they have to unlock things for me.
Chattafaukup
There are better ways to fight theft life fair wages.
YeahFineSure
For fifteen year olds?
TheobromineAddict
Is it more likely that undocumented folks might be shopping at Grocery outlet? Yes it is.

We are already there. They just don't advertise it. Apply to a major Corp and they have AI scrape you're entire social media history and if you score low your resume never gets to a human.
IamnotarobitIseethenumber2
Good for them! I won't be a customer of theirs now!
kitnnicole9
Sadly they're often in areas with lots of unhoused people, so their business model takes advantage of them not having the ability to travel far for shopping
Selfinflictedwounds
Walmart and others are doing it as well.
Sypurist
My local ShopRite has a sign saying they're doing it too.
DonkeyGoat
Well that's a shame, I just recently discovered this place. They have decent Doritos alternatives made of chickpeas.

We desperately need to toss Republicans out of office in a big way and finally pass some privacy / data sharing legislation.
TimeFoDat
Only the ones with offices on the second level or higher. Otherwise they just come back like roaches.
homoerection
Dems have voted in favor of mass surveillance, too. We need a whole update
DVSBSTrD
That time was 2016.

More like toss them into the sun.

We really should have the right of consent against these practices.

Dixie chicks tried to warn us 20+ fucking years ago. Our right t privacy is long dead and gone and is never coming back at this point.
FukcTedCruz
No such thing as consent under a Trump administration
Jewdakris
I fight with people about this all the time but I don't think because I've left my home that should Grant anybody the right to start fucking filming me. The idea that we live in a world where once you're in public anybody can take your photo is fucking ridiculous how do we not have any presumption of privacy just because we're in a public area. I know that sounds counter intuitive, but their surveillance isn't constitutional and it's intrusive.
AbeFromanSausageKingOfChicago
The day the patriot act passed, this was done. And ultimately the NSA can listen or watch anything you do with your phone.
drinkthederpentine
You do, it's a business. Don't go to it.
EmailFail
As someone else pointed out, this grocer exists in communities that have no other grocery stores. Therefore, that's not really an option for most
drinkthederpentine
Why are you parroting blatantly incorrect facts without doing literally any research? I just took 30 seconds and looked it up on Google. There are 3 markets within a few blocks.
EmailFail
Cool. If you check their website they say they service communities in areas where there are no other options. I'm sure there are exceptions to that rule.
Kilo11
You walking in and shopping there is the consent, very easy to revoke and voice your opinion, dont shop there
anarchoFeline
that works when it's one chain... what happens when this shit is 80% of businesses?
Kilo11
And what can I do about it besides not shop there?
anarchoFeline
vote for politicians that will regulate ai, organize/participate in protests targeting these stores, support unions that oppose it, take matters in to your own hands, poison data sets by wearing masks, help people that are economically locked in to those stores to not shop there, support increasing the minimum wage... i thought of all that in a minute. get creative and get organized
Kilo11
The thing is we are already doing all that and its not working, pretty words but useless in reality
Leaps
The shopper would have to be informed of this first to give consent. Shopping without knowing is not consent.
CallMeCourierSix
Tell me you didn't read the article, without using those words.
"Just don't shop at the cheapest grocery store. Who cares if you're poor, and have no other options. Just fucking die."
Fuck you, you sack of rotting dog shit. Keep licking those corporate boots. They'll reward you any day now. ANY DAY NOW! KEEP SIMPING! SIMP HARDER! C'MON MAN! YOU CAN DO IT! FIND ANOTHER WAY TO GET ON YOUR KNEES AND SUCK CORPORATE DICK!
ElbowDeepInUserSub
Reading is fun and cool! “Grocery Outlet is an affordable grocer that caters to lower-income consumers, who may not have another option,” added Hepner. “There is a coercive element to this data collection, because some people cannot simply choose to not go to the grocery store.”
IamnotarobitIseethenumber2
That's the gotcha though and they know it. if you complain they can say that just entering was consent.
ElbowDeepInUserSub
Hence why it is coercive - manufactured consent is not freely given and so should grant no legal protections to the entity that used their power to gain it. I technically have other options, but I've used Grocery Outlet for awhile to help drive parts of my grocery bill down to allow me more overall diversity and quality in my diet. I hate this so much.
IamnotarobitIseethenumber2
I agree, but we've all seen how this has played out in the past. Plus, what are the poors gonna do? Sue? fucked if you do and starving if you don't.
toogoodtomiss
He’s just saying legally, your consent is given by going there. The law doesn’t take into account that your options are few and far between.
ElbowDeepInUserSub
But that's precisely why it is being framed as coercive, to highlight how their argument may be that consent is implied, the counterargument is that if people have no choice, then it isn't actually consent at all.
Kilo11
Im poor, havent found a cheaper place for food than Walmart
toogoodtomiss
They don’t put Walmarts in the part of town that has Grocery Outlet. Too much shoplifting-
ElbowDeepInUserSub
Walmart is a cancer on scoeity in every conceivable way.
Kilo11
I agree but its cheap, I dont have target money right now
EmailFail
You're not telling the right person that. They're a captive consumer.
djevelen
They are yes, but, they also dont exist everywhere, my city actively blocks them from opening up shop, they have been trying to get a foothold here for decades, i am even pretty sure they were the high bid for a closed down K-mart site, and got rejected.
