This is going to sound dramatic, but my kid and I are starting to feeling like Jews in Poland in 1938; like we need to GTFO before they get here too. I'm scared and don't know what to do.
Edit: Thanks for the concern that most are showing, and the attempts to make sure I do this properly and for the right reasons. There's just a non-zero chance of shit going down and I'd want to be ready if it does. Even if I'd go through with it, with our gun laws it would be a few months before I get one.
Honestly, I think I'm just a scared and panicked parent right now. I just need to go through the emotions, and re-centre myself before I do anything.
I think we're all allowed a moment to panic right now.
SocialStomach
A gun is a gravity well. It pulls everything in, in the context to it. Colt made people equal, it is said, but what is equal in the context is the gun. Humans become an extension to it. Pull a gun, and it becomes the situation. You are just attached to it. The guy staring into it is just afterimage. What he does is… peripheral. After the gun came out, all of us, just a bunch of marionettes hanging from those strings, all attached. Fucks a guy up, I think.
SocialStomach
Coming from a something that had to shoot a human being, this. That said, if I had to do it again to save your kid or my friends in the same boat… I think I would do it. Never told them that, never will.
darthnerdus6236
Canada is in a rough spot. New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are already coming for trans kids. The worst possible people are too comfortable calling queer people pedophiles and groomers. The impending Conservative surge at the Federal level is daunting.
Find your community among queer people. That's how we are strongest and how we have always survived times like these. NB ousted their ghoul of a Premier. There is hope.
AmeliaAmmalia
I thought New Brunswick just elected a liberal premier?
darthnerdus6236
They did but New Brunswick was the Province to lay out so much of the current anti-trans policies being enacted in Canada. Highs and the Conservatives revised Policy 713 in 2023.
AmeliaAmmalia
I see. That's disappointing.
hfctom
Armed Queers don't get bashed. People forgot that in forty years. This is going to be the Reagan years all over again, but worse.
meadowmeal
Guns escalate situations. Carrying one statistically results in a good chance of it getting used against you. When it fails to be a deterrent, how many people have the conviction to shoot? Not saying you don't have a point, just that it's not a get out of lynching free card.
thepeenisbehindthetrenchcoat
get your PAL, pal.
Xenarion
As a fellow Canadian, I'd more recommend other avenues. Self-defence classes, pepper spray, tasers at most.
canadmos
I agree. Buying a gun for self defence purposes in Canada doesn't have any positive outcomes. Perhaps a better solution is to attempt to move somewhere safer or more open minded. Not everyone out there is a nutjob and there are plenty of safe areas to live, without feeling like you need to live in fear or have a weapon for self defence.
Skeptickler
People pepper spray and tasers are prohibited weapons in Canada.
joburg90
Is bear spray legal? Spray that can dissuade a grizzly is pretty powerful stuff.
canadmos
Yes it is, but it's for protection from bears. Not humans. Yeah you could use it on a human, there is no stopping that. But you'll most likely face penalties.
distraingotnobrakes
In North Carolina they sell both at the DMV so you can get them along with your drivers license renewal.
Xenarion
Ah fuck, never mind then.

Everyone has the right to exist. Everyone has the right to defend their existence. Or as captain Reynolds would say "If someone tries to kill you, you try to kill 'em right back!"

idiotsonfire
The better trained you are in handling yourself in a fight, the more you realize how to avoid getting in one in the first place.
idiotsonfire
Its a good skill to have to know how to defend yourself, don't get me wrong, everyone should know how to defend themselves.
idiotsonfire
So long as they also realize how few situations might require a gun to be kept that close at hand. If ever.
friendsofsandwiches
Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get one and get some training on it. But DO practice control of it. Don't let the kid have access to it unless you're going out shooting and supervising.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Oh if I'm getting my gun licence, they're getting theirs at the same time.
friendsofsandwiches
Get them a pink gun.

BosunMark
Even as a Canadian I think you are right to be scared. Canada has its fair share of right wing nutjobs. LBGT+ folks are going to be the first to be rounded up. But getting a weapon takes a great deal self introspection. A gun has but one purpose and that is to kill. If you can't squeeze that trigger, you have no business picking it up. That being said, I would suggest a shotgun. Far less training and practice needed for it to serve its purpose.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Thanks for the concern. And yeah I'll be thinking long and hard before I actually do anything. The shotty is just about the only gun on my list. To quote Bill Burr, it's got a good spread.
psmith00
yeah, we've got Pierre Poilevre ready to adopt the Project 2025 type agenda and deliver Canada as a vassal state to the American Heritage Foundation.
mechscientist
I know guns are designed as weapons of war, but you don't have to kill with a gun for it to be effective.
Not only can it wound, must people's behavior tends to get nice real fucking quick, when the alternative is someone waving a gun around.
KiddR78
My hillbilly mother gave me the advice to get a shotgun. She said just the sound of cocking it will make someone pause. It shoots a wide spray of bullets so you don’t have to have great aim. And it’s fairly easy to load, especially if you practice.
She’s had her concealed weapons license for years now and has several guns. My mom’s a badass. But she’s a trump supporter so I’m glad she didn’t vote this year.
Lysergian
This is a very touchy subject, but please be aware that guns in the home are used much more often for suicides than they are for self-defense. Bringing a gun into the home has it's own risks associated with it, so please make sure that no one in your family has suicidal ideation or drug use issues before considering one.
It's not glamorous or advertised, but more people need to talk about it when bringing guns into a shared household.
Mmbear
Not just suicide but also mishandling. Picking up a gun you thought was unloaded and not handling it as such. “Treat every weapon as if it was loaded.” One of the primary tenets of firearm training.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Fully aware of all of this and it's one of the main reasons I am anti-gun. Still.... worth considering at this point....
dreammer243
Unfortunately it's still going to be more likely your child will hurt herself with it than you'll ever use it to defend her.
dreammer243
Sorry, just realized you never specified gender, I shouldn't assume.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
All good, he/she/they so there is no wrong answer lol.
Lysergian
I'm not really a 2A guy, but i 100% understand where you're coming from. If you are aware of the dangers and take appropriate care to minimize risks, that's all you can do. If you do, practice. Make sure you know how to use it. Keep it locked up.
pickledpete1337
They are getting weird in the prairies.
Lugh314159
Canadian Pro tip, if you say you want a gun for self defence, you’ll be barred from owning a gun. You want to enter the sport of target shooting as a recreational hobby… is what you want.

Talk to your local gun store. Take classes, spend time at ranges that have rental firearms. Learn about guns. Even if you stay anti-gun you will have an educated opinion about them.
Hana77
From the statistics I've heard, I'm very sorry to say this, your queer child is much more likely to use that gun on themselves than to actually be protected by it. So be very careful
pomax
Getting your PAL is pretty easy, one day course, just don't make small talk with most of the room because holy shit do they admire Trump. Just do the day, pass the test, and get your rifle/shotgun. Don't bother with the second day handgun, there's no point.
Mexrose75
I hated the idea of a gun in the house. Despised it. Have one now. Learn gun safety. Go to a range. Practice. This is where we are now.
CedricDur
This is going to go so deep. They are openly laughing and admitting Project 25 is going to be a thing which is a compound with all the 'presidential immunity' (already seen as charges against Trump are dropped because the president is, apparently, immune to the law(???????????????).
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Seems there are more people with their heads in the sand than are actually paying attention. The belief that "It can never happen here" is so strong that they don't see it while is actually fucking happening.

if you want to go back to WWII, think of it this way. America is about to leave the Allies and join the Axis. the modern Axis being the Dictator controlled states like Russia, China, North Korea, pretty much half the world is controlled by Dictators at this point.
joburg90
He has said he will be a dictator. He is going to be the leader of the party that will control the whole government. Many states are gerrymandered and controlled by that same party. If you aren’t feeling absolute dread then I’m jealous of your privilege.

freshthrowaway1138
Or protect their family, like MLK did with his guns. Do you think he wasn't lynched because whites respected him? Noooope. He was fucking strapped anytime he wasn't publicly marching.
eddbrowne
I carry a tiny pistol & twice ended a situation by holding a hand forward & "stop" & reaching to pocket. (could also result in getting shot)
TheNLK
Completely innocent unarmed people get shot too. You rather get executed, raped, or beaten? Or have a chance to fight back? I assume the latter as you carry.
PenguinRiderKing
When the start of the conversation is 'there is a small but possible future where people want to kill us for being ourselves' then that is no longer an absurd question.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Bingo!
ApothecaryGrant
In an ideal world and a functioning society, you don't have to. But if society falls into decay and madness, killing could become a more normal part of life. That thought becoming reality should scare everyone, but I'd rather if such thoughts inspired people to vote for a better tomorrow. We're past that point, though. Tomorrow will not be better. The time for voting is over. Now we're all just waiting to see if we're going to become victims or not.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Pretty much the conclusion I've come too.
mechscientist
That implies the only thing a gun can do is kill.
A gun is scary. It simply existing and its' existence being known is a deterrence. After all, are YOU gonna fuck with the guy with the gun, unless you have some serious backing?
Hell, even if you have to fire the thing, you don't have to go for immediate killshots, since I take it you aren't a cop. Shoot them in the arm or the leg (best the shin, so you don't nick the big thigh arterie).
eddbrowne
I was infantry in war. Now I would not inflict more harm than appropriate to quickly stop a lethal threat; with a bias toward a quick end.
ThomasThundersword
while i agree in principle, most legal doctrine actually disadvantages you using anything less than full lethal force. if you draw its to shoot, if you shoot its to kill. anything else and you can quickly be the one in trouble for escalating. since “if it wasn’t serious enough to kill, why did you brandish/use a deadly weapon”
JohnWickdidnothingwrong
If they try to hurt me or mine? Yes. What is your wife going to do if that happens, file a complaint with the HOA?
zagibu
Yes, if somebody tries to kill your daughter, it's better to kill them instead. Of course you can also take the moral high ground and just sacrifice your daughter, the choice is up to you.
nikored
That's the exact fantasy the right wingers have. And one of these days the a-rabs really will come in their house and threaten their wives, and then all those decades and millions of guns will be worth the while.
zagibu
Ok
Marsupialmessiah
I would not advise to do this tho, moral high ground usually results in no change and you out of a loved one and angry. In martial arts the secret ingredient is absolute devastating reaction every single time. Soneone Throws a punch? Break their arm, literally. I thing in this situation, we should adopt a "dont attack but take no shit" stance.
Someshithead241
Why, in your mind, are those the only two options?
zagibu
They aren't the only two options, but it might boil down to those two options, and then if you are unarmed, you only have the latter option.
Someshithead241
It absolutely will not boil down to those two options. There is no scenario in which it will ever only be those two options. But let's say foe arguments sake it is, it won't be, but let's play pretend.
Being armed is not necessary to kill, so you are not shoved into "own a gun or let the people die." That's moronic.
There are a multitude of ways to kill someone whilst being unarmed. But even if that weren't true and we lived in a world where only weapons can kill, then the fact is that the
Someshithead241
Attacker, since they are aiming to kill, would therefore be armed themselves. Something you can use to kill them, in this magical world where that is your only option and only weapons can kill. And just to be extra explicit, because I don't think you understand this, guns are not the only weapons in the world.
Acdkatie
I support your decision, most of these Maga idiots are under the impression that they are the only ones with guns which emboldens them. They assume these marginalized communities they go after such as the LGBTQ don’t arm themselves. Make sure you do it in the right way, you and everyone in your household need to take safety training.
Peter21237
Sir/Ma'am

Yup. I fully plan on going through the comments and showing them how wrong they are every time a new atrocity will come out.

Wait, how many condoms do I put on a gun until it doesn't shoot it's load?
memeseeks
I think it depends on the gun. If it's a derringer I imagine one should do.

HaveANiceFace
There's no "practicing" safety. It's a ritual, a code you live by, a procedure performed every single time. Make a checklist if you have to.
zenoshogun
So move to Australia?
zenoshogun
(ok ok in the context of gun safety, not taking wildlife into account)
Aesonique
We're pretty hot on gun safety, proper licencing and such here in Oz.
jonhamsandwich11
Bright side in Canada, to get your possession and acquisition licence, you have to pass a mandatory safety class then submit to the RCMP for a background check
friendsofsandwiches
Do we have anything like that in the US?
LordofSadFace
Dude, it is easier to buy a gun than condoms
Akistos
BUA HA HA HA HA HA HA
dogboybastard
Absolutely not! All you need is to be 18+, valid ID, pass a federal FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS). 21 for a handgun, six states and the District of Columbia have a waiting period for purchasing any firearm, while four other states have waiting periods for certain types of firearms. Mental Health issues and Domestive Violence will not keep you from getting a gun.

MilesNiveus
Out of curiosity, which state(s) require a safety class before purchasing a firearm? Or require an acquisition license? I know a few still require license to carry concealed firearms, and background/history checks are in place for retail purchases, but that's the extent I've ever seen. Buying, owning, and open-carrying are all fairly unregulated. Not trying to be antagonistic, I just can't find any info.
whoatherebigfella
I hear ya. I really just know about Illinois. When I was into it, they required at least 16 hours of classroom training plus time for shooting skills development for a CC license. They still run background checks on firearms purchases but I think they may still waive that requirement at gun shows, not sure. I believe that they do require mandatory insurance for conceal carry.
Sooner70
I shouldn't laugh, but I can't help but chuckle here. Not because I'm anti LGBTQ+. Far from it. Because I find irony in the number of anti-gun folks who've "seen the light" in the last 48 hours.
fnoigy
It's the whole reason liberals were chosen as the anti-gun side. Keeps us weak.
TacoPoweredHelicopter
They are still anti gun, they are just scared as hell because of the rhetoric coming out of the right. It wouldn't be a problem if the people threatening the existence of their family had no guns themselves and you know stopped threatening the existence of their family.
There has been nothing in your life you have been against but gone along with because you felt you had no choice?
TheZeldaZone
It's almost like hatred and threats of death are the only things keeping these section things relevant.
zagibu
Anti-gun stances have always been nice-weather philosophies that quickly fall apart when times are grim. Most jews during the holocaust have also been anti-gun, pacifist and trusting in their god to protect them, and in the end, over 6 million of them were dead.
MissSiesta
Fuck off. The reason is that an increase in guns in a safe society increases the probability of a nut job committing a mass shooting.
The people now trying to get guns is for them to be bale to defend themselves AGAINST the nut jobs. Because a nut job won the election and his followers will be coming to people's houses for lynchings. You can laugh, but maybe try to use your brain instead and place yourself in their shoes.
Teawrecks66
Is it ironic? Or did people just use to genuinely believe the people around them wouldn't sell them out to the government to feel special
Sooner70
The Salem Witch Trials. The Red Scare. People are people. They've *ALWAYS* done that.
teknojo
Right, but in the moment most everyday people don't think their neighbors will do that. Humans are bad at remembering this, and the US Right has spent effort over the last 50+ years aiding that bad memory by fucking the education system.
It is still enough in the minds of folks thanks to media and not completely crap educations, and is now suddenly very real that it CAN happen in their backyard.
If nothing else good comes of this, at least a LOT of folks are finally going to get wake up calls.
cyanideremark
I bet the fire-arm industry is rubbing their hands together. I'm grateful for a wide ocean divide rather than a land border like the poor Canucks. - An Australian.
Muffyns
Ocean divide dont mean much anymore ships and planes exists also the usa has nasa im sure with trump and elon they will figure out a way to drop nukes from orbit
cyanideremark
It was more a comment on civil unrest. An ocean makes a pretty good boundary compared to land.
Sulexar
Most aren't anti-gun, they're anti-assault rifle. Pistols and shotguns for personal defense are absolutely necessary. Military grade weapons for civilians and police are not.
MrStealYourGiF
Strangely we can get a .50 caliber similar to the one that holds/held the distance sniping record, but no subsonic pistols.
zagibu
So what is the miliary or the police going to do with an assault rifle, that is too dangerous for regular people to do?
jayinvancouver
Canadian laws say otherwise.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Our lives have never felt to be threatened by society before.
zagibu

Canada is a VERY safe place. Always hovering around the top 10 world wide. The first time I felt threatened was during the trucker convoy. This feels worse.
Sooner70
So what's changed? Admittedly, I'm not in Canada, but from outside I'm not seeing any changes. Hell, even down here in the states the only thing that has changed is awareness. It's not like the Orange One introduced new ideas that made good people bad.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
What changed? Project 2025 reading like Mein Kampf, but replacing jews with migrants and the LGBTQ crowd. And he didn't make good people bad. He allowed shitty people to be worse and bad people to be in charge.

Yes, I am afraid of lone fascist actors. They're the ones that feel like they have nothing to lose. I'm not afraid of all of them as if they're some military industrial monolith that all have the same Chuck Norris skill at asymmetric warfare or that can manage continually getting nonspoiled food to their "troops." Did the Confederacy win the Civil War? No. They won't win their crusade either.

The whole WORLD IS A LESS SAFE PLACE NOW, BECAUE OF THE ELECTION YOU DIMWIT.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
You're aware that the American election won't only affect America, right? I think you greatly underestimate your influence on us. That and I'm honestly kind of scared that Trump might think annexing Canada is a good idea. We'd have absolutely no way of stopping him if he did.
cyborganism
It will surely influence people here like he's influenced Canadians in his last presidency. But he'll never annex Canada. What we need to do here is not vote conservative in a couple of years. We gotta vote NDP.
IainG101
Trump might want a piece of Canada for some obscure reason, but his wannabe Nazi backers know that the *only* thing that will persuade other countries to reintroduce democracy is to invade a neighbour. Otherwise there is no reason to enter the logistical nightmare of moving materiel to another continent. They WILL try to take Canada, but NOT by force. Stay vigilant, stay politically active, and you can probably keep them out. And of course vote like your life depends on it, because it does.
IainG101
But also, yes, your bigots will feel empowered, and they will probably be backed. IF you can stomach actually doing the deed, arming up is not a bad idea. I know you've expressed a preference for shotguns, but I'd suggest a decent hunting rifle for the range advantage; if someone is close enough that a shotgun is viable, there's a good chance anything they have is also in effective range.
SitSnacks
You need to get help, friend, if you are entertaining the notion of America annexing Canada and Donald being unstoppable. Absolutely not the right frame of mind to have when you're going to be a gun owner.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Am I just allowed to panic for 1 fucking day? Gun laws up here make it that even if I started the process today I wouldn't be able to get one for a few months. So please just let me just get through the emotions. Am I allowed to do that at least?
SitSnacks
"Getting through the emotions" by posting some rather delusional stuff then arguing with strangers online doesn't seem like an entirely healthy way to process things ngl.
Affray
Maybe you just aren't appreciating the severity of the struggle we're all probably heading toward from like five different angles.

pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
We have 70% of the world's drinkable water, the world's second largest oil supplies, and the world's largest soft wood supply. That's not even going into our precious metals. There's plenty to want.
ChanceVLuck
You're making my point. Canada, according to Canada.ca has 7% of the world's renewable fresh water and as much as 20% of the worlds fresh water. As for softwood. Russia is the largest trees and the is the largest exporter of softwoods such as the Siberian Larch. I could go on but you are making mountains out of molehills with your talk of buying a gun in a country that has outlawed handguns and now your concerned about being invaded? Seriously, you need to talk to a professional.
morrighan42
Yup, the only reason I'm looking to move to Japan instead of Canada is that housing is cheaper there and Canada is too close to the US
JohnBigboote74
Wouldn't that be fucked up if Orange Asshole pulls the USA out of NATO, tries to annex Canada, and then NATO has to come to Canada's aid. Sounds like a bad movie script... or something totally plausible with Orange Asshole headed back to the White House.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
To me it doesn't just sound plausible, it sounds likely.
JohnBigboote74
Well, the one thing stopping him is that he doesn't tend to follow through on anything that isn't instantly gratifying to him personally. He might like the sound of invading Canada, but if it starts seeming like work, chances are he'll move to something else.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
That's the problem, it wouldn't be any work at all. You know how Russia thought it was going to get to Kiev in a day? That would ACTUALLY happen here. Our military is a joke.

It's usually both.

It may not happen anytime soon, they'll be busy rounding up minorities for a few years first. But when the climate disaster really hits and half the US becomes all but unlivable? You better believe they'll be looking North.

It is illegal to carry a gun for self-defence in Canada.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
No, it's illegal to carry a gun in public without a trigger guard and carry case. Self defence has nothing to do with it.
Self-Defence With a Firearm in Canada is governed by Section 34 of the Criminal Code, which permits using force for self-defence under reasonable grounds. While the Code allows for proportional force in self-defence, it doesn't explicitly state that firearms can be used for this purpose. But it also does not state that you can't either. Everything is situational.
NaughtButOne
You also need to have a purpose for carrying a gun. "I always take it with me" isn't good enough. If it's a handgun, you need to be a member of a local gun range and be explicitly travelling to or from said range. Otherwise, a peace officer can arrest you for carrying a weapon in public.

I literally copy pasted the law from the government's website. But sure, go ahead and downvote me.
majortool
I didn't downvote you, but you're still wrong and you need to re-read what I said.
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
It was a general comment. At one point I was at -2.

When you apply for a licence, the form you fill out will actually say, "Do you intend to use a firearm for self-defence?"
LylaLexie
Wait, can I ask a clarifying question? (I’m from the states so we of course have a few guns in my house, though I’m pro gun control myself.) In Canada, they have a question on the application asking if you’re planning on using the gun for self defense, and you’re supposed to say no?
epledryyk
correct. you are not allowed to have a gun for self defence here, as there's very very very little circumstance where self defence with firearms is actually justified (we don't have stand your ground laws). if you shoot someone, basically no matter the circumstance, it's tried as murder.
there's a lot of people who lie, of course. they "need" this decked out tactical rifle "for hunting" and so on, and mostly just keep 'em in a basement forever, but
pirateninjaunicornattacksquad
Ah, okay, see that I wasn't aware of. Thank you, that actually does lighten my position.
Listen man, I'm just panicking right now. I wouldn't be able to get a gun today, or even within the next couple of months, even if I tried. I just needs to go through the emotions and re-centre myself.
PineappleLoopsBroether
What you’re doing is not pre-meditation, don’t listen to that moron, he’s probably looking forward to you being unarmed.
majortool
Yeah that's all the wrong reasons to have a gun. It is permissible to use a firearm to defend your life. It is not permissible to carry a gun in public outside of a locked container or to bring it with you to defend yourself against something you expect to happen. You need a special licence to do that and they're very careful to whom they give them.
majortool
And if you catch a transportation charge, they are going to bring the full weight of the government down on you hard.
