I feel crazy because is seems the world has completely forgotten the origin of that term (in its modern sense). Am I the only one who remembers a huge trend around 2015-16 of fake news websites and facebook pages popping up to spread misinformation and outright lies. It was so prevalent that it got it's own term in actual news coverage: "Fake News." Most of the sites benefited Trump, so he deftly co-opted the term to use it against any legitimate story he didn't like.
It might be the worst the US has seen, but it's important to understand that the invention of "news" was specifically for spreading biased views on things. We've never not had fake news. Sometimes we've had relatively high integrity reporting. News and reporting and journalism are all related but different things btw, and there are still good sources for reporting and journalism. But as always, stay vigilant and triangulate your information.
The news lying on occassion is not the same as a prominent leader constantly telling us that everything we hear that he doesn't like is a lie. i.e. Trump, Goebbels
fake news is how you ended up with a fake president. the internet was flooded with fake news websites and shit in the Obama years. they'd clone CNN or NBC and have it filled with made up bullshit and it would spread on Facebook etc. how have people forgotten about this???
He certainly made things *drastically* worse, but we were already on the "not good" road. McCarthyism, Southern Strategy, Reaganomics, the aftermath of 9/11, and Citizens United ALL played their parts.
I feel the scales "tipped" somewhere between Reaganomics and CU. Not sure if it'd be before or after 9/11. At some point, the slowly-accruing damage Reagan did added up to a point where we went from "more good than bad" to "more bad than good". (I speak of the national situation at large, not the
government alone; the government has been making trouble the ENTIRE time.)
If that damage didn't reach the tipping point by 9/11, the policies that were enacted in response to the attack definitely were the deciding factor. The attack shook us, badly, and many retreated into fear, and let it lead them.
That fear became the seeds of the resentment, and ultimately hatred, that fuel MAGA today. Things were already trending bad, but that upped the game a great deal.
If you think the media was not manipulative before Trump, you are really not informed, young, or just very very stupid and manipulated. Maybe all together. Western capitalist media is all together manipulative because profit is priorized over telling the truth. USA is really "first" at it. But we have the same manipulative news in every European country...
I dont think this is an R or D argument. Do parents lie to their kids? The government lies to the people. I think the real question is how do they lie and for what purpose
I am firmly of the belief that the gov't lying to its citizens is treasonous behavior. They're being paid by the people's taxes, they owe those people an honest accounting.
Cool. They have been, are currently, and will continue to lie to you. At least in the past, the govt lied out of a sense of protecting the public to some degree. Now the goat lies for blatant corruption and to protect pedophiles
Bush? You mean Nixon? Or Hoover and the Depression telling everyone it's going to be fine in newsprint? How about Harding? Hanging his hat with corruption and crime, redirecting funds, and watching the good people secure their funds pre FDIC banks knowing they were going to collapse, but stating that "everything is fine...." Misinformation is what The Orange calls fake news, but it's been around since hominans (early humans) began having languages and rivals. About 150,000 years ago
Ugh… no offense to OP, and not a value statement on their character… but this image is the dumbest fucking thing I have seen on Imgur today. We’ve had fake news every day since the 87 when the Fairness Doctrine was repealed. (Even before then, but this seminal act 39 years ago really kicked it up a notch)
....I mean it got worse sure, but this is also incorrect. Go look back on all the Pro War pieces during WWII and before. Yellow Journalism was 1890's almost predating by a literal 100 years. Media in all its forms under capitalism has always been a propaganda wing for the wealth and powerful.
Yeah. Although... it wasn't as big of a problem before the fairness doctrine was removed. Doing that has allowed them the spew whatever vile opinions they want as 'fact' and led us... here.

We have had fake news since the printing press allowed any asshole to distribute pamphlets

Your fake news is partially why your fake president was elected.

You must have slept through the first half of Rupert the Stupert's media career with NewsCorpse.

I mean we did. Fox somehow became "Fast Animals Slow Kids" and Simpsons into the #1 source for American News...
EroticZombiePants
Disney basically owns The Simpsons now. Murdoch kept control over Fox News though.
jenoween
Yes, now. Now for the ~20 years before that.

"fake news" is just the press calling a liar a liar

Regardless of who is Potus do you think the media is honest when it comes to a story that involves their advertisers.

It's not the news that are fake, it's the editors who manipulate the news at their will:

It's clear this person does not remember the post 9/11 fear mongering that brought about the Iraq war.

People have been creating fake news since the concept of news even existed. The Ancient Romans excelled at it.

Because Communist countries always print the truth?
ChiLLeCheeze
Yeah, because every country that the US overthrew was because they were Communist/Socialist. How could we ever expect truth from those countries?

can no one ever post an honest, accurate critique of something in capitalism without you yutzes coming in "but communism bad!"

And yes, he is who the Pulitzer prize is named for.
