#1 with what? A hammer that broke after 3 hits?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#2 yes, but warrants are specific, so it would have to say for the purpose of ex-sanguinating the human resident and no judge would issue that (unless they were also vampires).

Cock- has consistantly mid stats, but low for "cock clown" which sounds like a great insult to me. Fascinating.

#1 it's so stupid, in the Dead Island game. If you used a crowbar as a weapon it would break after hitting a zombie about 30 times. A real steal crowbar could probably be used to kill every human on the planet without wearing down, if you had enough time.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#19 uhhh I assure you, we get bored.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#1 this actually killed Resident Evil 2 for me. The second I found out that your knife breaks after using it to get a zombie off of you once, I was done. That broke the immersion of the world so hard there was no going back.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It doesn't though. It just takes a lot of damage and you can retrieve it by killing the zombie. Like all things, it's a resource and you can decide whether to use knife durability or healing items to counteract the damage.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna be a pedant here and point out that many of these mechanics are for gameplay balance reasons over biting realism. If your knife was always in top condition, all the time you would just fight every zombie you came across completely breaking tension. The same way ammo is a limited resource inside of a police station, that would definitely have an armory somewhere. Admittedly this irks me more in the RE4 remake but the knife has more utility there and it discourages using it all together.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Walking corpses and horrific monsters? Sign me up. A knife that breaks? Well, sir, that's just a bridge too far for me.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It kind of is though. You can suspend disbelief for a lot, but something like it just bizarre to decide on.

#1 i think my favourite things that overlooked in "realistic games" are the absence of stamina bars and healthbars. Yes i dont have some permanent hud showing how fatigued i am but im pretty sure i know physically when im tired. I may not be able to tell exactly when i am dying sure, but im pretty sure i know that i am dying. You dont get that feedback in video games so those bars are representations of those feelings

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#1 Yeah? You and what axe?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#19 Not true. We get "bored" when forced out of our places and made to go somewhere that we could consider uninteresting. An example: I can easily get bored on a vacation if it's all the same usual touristy shit, and I don't get to hide in the workshop at home and make/fix stuff. Yes yes, the place we are can be interesting in a detached way, but I really don't care, and would rather be doing what I like.

#2 A vampire police officer is a vampire first, so no, a warrant wouldn't do shit.

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Your house/land is technically goverment owned. Warrant would be a goverment sanctioned "invitation" to said house, outranking you personally?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of course not. There's no way in hell a supernatural barrier can be thwarted by the technicalities of bureaucracy.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 Swear to fuck, everyone who says they want "realism" in games always mentions something that would actively make the game worse. Like the idiots that want you to have to put gas in your car in GTA. This does not improve the game in any meaningful fashion, goes against the ethos of what the game is about, and would be a major hassle for 99% of players who DON'T want to play a hardcore life simulator and just want to blow shit up.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My theory is that there is a segment of gamers who have little to no skill but lots of patience for repetition, which they mistake for skill. So they clamor for games which require little skill but lots of drudgery so that they can feel superior about their specific "talent".

And of course devs love catering to this, because if your hyper-metabolic survival game character has to spend 90% of his time eating and can only spend 10% actually engaging with the game, that's 10x playtime for free.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That said, 'My Summer Car' is ridiculously fun (though typically best taken in small doses)

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, but that's a very niche game that if you're buying it, you know damn well what you're getting into. It's a shame the devs are using AI in the sequel.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#2 im gonna say no because the warrant doesn't give the vampire permission to enter, just the cop.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The vampire is a cop. They're the same person.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well the cop can’t vampire around in this case

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can if the warrant counts as a valid invitation, which is the question under discussion.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It has to be someone inside the residence.
Not from outside.
If that wasn’t the case you would permit other anomalies like
someone 60 years before inviting someone inside the house would be acceptable.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe. It's really lore-dependent. There's not really one set of vampire-rules that every vampire fiction has to abide by.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I meant it as, the warrant satisfies the cop part of him but not the vampire part of him. They have to be allowed inside by a person who is inside. But also, cops and other authority figures don't need warrants. If they did, ice would be operating completely differently.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, the question is whether the warrant counts as an invitation. Also, depending on the lore, the invitation might not even have to be by a person at all.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 Most games are done before degradation would be an issue irl. Any firearm worth your money is going to last tens of thousands of rounds with proper maintenance. I'm not sure there's enough ammo in Stalker 2 to break your guns.

8 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

In all fairness, an axe might break after chopping ten trees, depending on its temper and the type of trees it is cutting. Also, how recently it has rained could make matters worse. But that's the only realistic one, and technically, if you get more than one axe, one of them should outlast.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Makes more sense in Fallout or 7days where your barrel might be a 1018 steel pipe, there's not a single bullet mold to be found anywhere, and the gunpowder is of 'questionable' composition

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

#2 yes but they could only perform the duties as prescribed in their job as a cop. The search warrant does not qualify them for blood access.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd say no, acictiontually. The master-vampire can't order his vampire minions to enter your home, the best they can usually do is hype up a mob of dirty villagers with torches who are under no such restr

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The master vampire doesn't have proper authority, though. The state does technically own your house and at a higher level of ownership than your own.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This whole argument treats vampires like they're fae, or demons. Laws and contracts aren't something vampires care about. The restriction on vampires is that they need to be invited in by somebody who LIVES THERE, not somebody who owns the property in some vague technical sense.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I clearly remember, in BTVS, that there was a vampire invited in by writing that was on the building. Also, they're demons in that show. But the point is, mostly, that there's not a universal way that vampires work. Some lores might answer that question differently.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hmmm.. perhaps. Though I've most often seen this vampiric limitation as something innate. One can order ice to burn, but it will likely remain there melting slightly.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, so the question becomes what constitutes an invitation, in the lore, and who is 'authorized' to give it.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#3 could be people... could be rats.

8 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Just be sure to only eat free range rats. Rats that chew on trash of civilization taste terrible due to the diet.

Rodents of Unusual Taste?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't believe they exist.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They did, but have been routed from these parts.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

depends on the type of apocalypse, and how long its been going on. Unless its been long enough that the behaviour has been selectively bred out of them, rat traps should still work

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

#2 permission has to come from someone inside, so while a warrant might be needed for the law, it wouldn't be enough for a vampire.

8 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Yeah if anything a vampire cop has a double whammy on going inside

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In curse of strahd, strahd can enter any house at will because he owns the land. If you look at it one way, your land is really owned by the government and you just have a license to that land, so government has the authority to invite someone onto your property through a warrant.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Come back during business hours."

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A warrant is permission given by someone other than the homeowner. So they can't come in. Unless the resident reads the warrant and lets them in. So... Maybe?

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Having sat in on this argument, it really depends on the interpretation of who can give permission. A warrant is essentially state permission to enter a space. I've heard of the idea of police depts keeping a vampire on staff because only *valid* warrants would allow them to enter a house, and thus they can make sure their warrant is legit

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A vampire homicide detective totally could enter to check on the deceased though. It would be a rough few years working their way up from patrolman.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only if the deceased lived alone, otherwise they'd need permission from one of the other living residents of the house.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends on the specific lore. In BTVS, a school motto inscribed on the building was enough to count as an invitation.

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Isn't a school a bit more of a "public" location though? I though the restriction was typically *personal* dwellings.

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I think they might have done a ritual to make it count or something? I don't remember exactly. The scene did happen, though.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

BTVS?

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Buffy the vampire slayer. Idk if they mean the movie or show. But thats kind of a public place. They might not be able to get you out of your locker if you stuff yourself in.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

#1 - Game Designer here. These are 100% intentional time dilations that actually have some math behind them.

VERY FEW games use a 1:1 hour clock… usually it’s 24 hours real time to 20-30m game time, which means that’s 3 mins of flashlight time in game equates to 3-4 hours real time.

Also the one tree you chopped down on that timescale is an abstraction of the total lumber you’d need to build a house etc - real scale that’s like 30-40 trees, in games it’s 5-10. Same idea as the flashlight.

8 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

Horror games are very much presented in real time. It doesn't even really make sense to think of most horror games as a representation of a larger segment of time.
Besides, haven't you noticed it's only the indie/amateur horror games that have the flashlight issue? If you pay $60 for a game, you won't need to collect flashlight batteries. But if you pay $10 for a horror game that'll be at least half the game-play.
It's intentional all right. Intentional padding.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not wrong about indie horror, but some of my favorites use the exact same mechanics just on oil lanterns or matches and I find it so much more believable. It’s an odd psychological thing.

But also those padded horror games would be super boring without a light mechanic (some don’t have much else). And notice how you’re not throwing away a bunch of random wrong batteries? You never open a NEW package either, all loose, implying pre-used or old. Still abstracted for time (length of linear game).

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't buy it. Sure, the game clock may run 50 times faster than a real world clock, but the character doesn't act 50 times faster. "Get the key from the kitchen, use it on the toolbox in the attic, then take the wrench to the basement and use it to fix the pipe.", would take the character 10 minutes, not 10 hours.

8 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

What you’re describing is actually in every game engine usually and we do that during development for testing: raw timescale. Console commands are like ‘set.timescale 50’ - now I’m shooting across the entire open world in 20s. However it’s basically impossible to expect player input to scale with that raw timescale.

In your example, you’d be pressing “chop” 50 more times than you are now. That will take approximately 50x as long, ruining your time dilation because you can’t speed up the player.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You are right that the side effect of keeping player actions real speed and game time at 5x is that things like getting into a car in GTA due to the timescale is you getting into a car for 10-15m in real time.

Additive tasks compound this (get in the car, drive there, get out, walk in, etc) because all the delays and “real time lag” just stack with no ability to catch up. That’s when players typically notice the most - that and when it’s actions they take in real life often.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Right, but that's not the issue here. You don't reduce the number of trees chopped from 50 to 5 because of time dilation. You do it because chopping down 50 trees is super boring and players wouldn't enjoy it.

Same thing with the flashlight issue. Sure, the flashlight battery may last 4 hour of in game time, but I the player watched it run out in the time it took me to complete a 5 minute task, and that's frustrating.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Buddy… if your point is that repetitious actions are bad and that you like it when games find ways to reduce that and save you time… but you call it something different than I did…

I have some startling news for you about my original point and the entire definition of time dilation as it pertains to video game action economies.
