If you think this is crazy, back in the Cretaceous the oxygen content of the atmosphere was much higher than it is today around 35%, insects breathe through respiration through tiny little passages in their body and this meant that with the higher oxygen content insects could be much bigger.

Most of these are pretty cool, and I'd be more than happy to hold them. That crab, though? That's a pass from me. No pinches, please.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You couldn’t pay me to hold a millipede

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the quick type of then now gifs vids memes w.e the fuck im lookn for

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pfft they have crabs *and other assorted creatures and insects! Seriously though this was pretty interesting it always amazes me how small some eggs are and how big the finished little friends can be!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can’t stop watching but I fucking hate it

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

They're so beautiful but I'm holding my phone at arms length

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m sorry, that snail egg was an absolute unit! I thought that was a bird egg

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Weirdly... my snail did NOT come from an egg that size. My big boy came from one about the size of a round edemame bean (not the pod).

Respect to people who can handle these creatures. Most of those bugs are harmless but my body viscerally rejects the idea of touching them.

Those are some big boys right there

Is it like 25% of all creatures on earth are beetles? Something wild like that.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

At 48 seconds..no thank you...at 50 seconds FUCK THAT

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the millipede looking thing was the only one I had a visceral response to

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It is indeed a millipede. Giant African Millipede probably. They do actually make good pets and are very docile, but yeah, not for everyone lol. https://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/i-think-this-page-sumarizes-a-lot-of-what-i-like-about-commander

I puckered up with the millipede, but otherwise, COOL!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interesting that some of the larger eggs resulted in smaller critters - specifically the mantis towards the end.

Showers vs growers

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not gonna lie, I thought she threw a bird egg in there by accident until I saw the size of the snail that came after.

2 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Was that an “African land Snail?”

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The whole time I was trying to predict how big they would be based on egg size. I suspect some may have been pods that hold multiple offspring

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Mantids create egg cases, so there's actually HUNDREDS of eggs in it!

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Good eye. The mantis "egg" is an ootheca, a collection of eggs. This species (Hymenopus Coronatus) lays 4-8 ootheca as an adult, each containing roughly 10-40 nymphs (babies).

2 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

I was wondering if the snail/gastropod egg was also an egg case, and not a single egg

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. Thank you for helping the curious minds.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also that is specifically a female. This species is particularly unique as it not only mimics an orchid, but the male reaches adulthood 2 instars (number of mounts) faster than the female. This results in a tiny male (2.5cm male Vs 9cm female). This has 2 benefits in turn

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I'd bet the main benefit is that as males do not investing that much to offspring (eggs) a faster maturing male line will have more offspring than slower maturing line.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2. Prevents inbreeding, as under the same circumstances food/water/temp availability, the male will become an adult before the female is adult and egg ready.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

1. Minimal chance the male can harm the female during copulation.
