I was threatened when I took my 3 kids (1M, 2F) to change in the labelled Family Change Room at my local swim and aquatic centre. A female centre supervisor opened the door a screamed at me to get out or she'll call the police. I pointed at the signage and suggested she get the Manager while I finish the tasks at hand. I then waited for the Manager and suggested he train his staff better than that woman displayed. He apologised and we went home without the kids being overly concerned.

His family shouldn't suffer for it, but neither should his employer. The company would be unfairly destroyed through guilt-by-association if they kept him employed. It might be different if his job wasn't customer-facing, but real estate and sales in general require interpersonal relationships.

So most bigger companies have clauses in your employment contract that allow for termination over basically bad press. Its to protect the company from hiring someone who latter is seen in video harassing people. And since it was part of the condition for employment its on you to not get fired for something you both agreed you can get fired for.

Two things to understand here.
First, there are basically no protections against your employer firing you in the US. There are some laws that make it harder for an employer to fire you because of protected status, like race, religion, gender, etc, but the employer can say they fired you because they didn’t like a shirt you wore and then they can fire away.
Second, the article states that the company referenced this person as an independent contractor that had been working for them.

True, but it's a bit more involved. They stated he was an independent contractor, so they're technically not firing him, just not using his services anymore. Same kind of bullshit logic Uber and DoorDash use to escape liability for severance, among other things. It also means he has very few rights or benefits through the company, because he wasn't technically an employee. I hate that they get away with this shit, but I love that journey for him.

Valid distinction! Ironically in the US it’s actually harder to terminate a contractor in some cases (you’re more likely to have to pay out a contract to get out of it early, while employees can be terminated at will).
In other cases, you have termination for convenience in that contract and it’s as easy as writing a letter.
Grey shirt’s employee rights (if any) are with the contacting company itself who actually employs him (if they even do, some don’t or it could be his own business).

Possibly, most work contracts stipulate that you must at all times represent and conduct yourself in a way that reflects well on the company, these are known as reputational clauses. He was an independent contractor, so no union protections, that's why he could be easily fired. If he worked in a sector that had a union like police, fire, teacher etc then he would be suspended until whatever protocol/ investigation is completed to determine is he should be fired or not.
