I was a successful illustrator that also did caricatures of coworkers and friends, and gladly retired. A friend passed recently, and I was asked by his wife to do a caricature for his celebration of life. I was rusty, and she wanted it right away! I went to Gemini AI, posted his pic, and asked for an ink rendering in the style of R. Crumb. It was fucking great. Like I said — glad I’m a retired illustrator now.

What occupation you have won't matter. All that's going to matter is that a pile of linear algebra designed to produce an imitation of human generated text will be given control over things that "almost but not quite human like text generation" is a really bad hiring qualification.

That's not true. LoRAs are a subset of AI which are essentially "expansion packs" to add a new concept to a model, like adding Crash Bandicoot if the model doesn't already know about him, and those have been made by training on AI images for years now. The source just has to be high quality and well-tagged. Additionally, the greatest gains to AI now are not being made by absorbing more and more content, but by training on existing content in a better, more thorough way. And also >

If it ever DID happen that AI models started degrading from training on AI, everyone would simply shrug and go back to using the previous model. There is an incentive among model makers to make new an improved ones, and if they fail they're just not going to get used. Current models can already generate essentially anything you can imagine anyway, it would be no great loss if generation tech froze solid right now and never improved.

Every day I wonder if that’s the day it updates and shows the message: “introducing the make-nice-with-ai button” at which point I can just pack my stuff and leave.
I’ll bet all my money they’re working on something like this because every online store needs nice pictures of their products so they’d never not buy Adobe again and will gladly pay additionally for AI credits if it means they can fire people.

I have a friend working in a print shop. Several of their customers have already stopped having them do any brochure designs and started using AI. The results aren't great, but they're good enough that the customer doesn't care. They still get to print the stuff, but a fair portion of their business is disappearing.

Nah, there genuinely are actually fewer fake videos making the rounds. Even though it's gotten a lot better, there are still a few key things to look for that give them away pretty easily. Secondary effects are a big one. Like a car driving through fresh snow without leaving tire tracks, a vehicle rolling over a railing without damaging it, bystanders not reacting to things they should, etc. Monotone or bad audio is another easy tell.

Realistically, the technology is coming and staying, and is gonna be part of many industry like any other tool before it. Same thing happened when digital art started taking of: people were blasting it for "killing real art", being the death of physical art, etc. Now most artists use it and live by the fancy brushes in Photoshop, Gimp, Procreate, etc. and the glory of Ctrl+Z.

I use it my personal life and at work. It's like having a really eager assistant that you have to keep on task and double check work. It's replacing jr level folks, but only if sr level folks know how to utilize it. Oh, for sure. GenAI images have been at the level of "100% convincing at a glance" for quite some time now and that's how most of that stuff is used: as filler slop you don't spend more than a second or two looking at. On the other hand, even the current really high-quality stuff tends to fail at closer examination, but any potential smoking guns are becoming more and more unlikely to stand out enough to make one realise something's wrong in the first place.

Unless the intent is to deceive, like fake pictures of a politician doing something plausible to turn the public against them, I don't necessarily consider it deception. A meme or a goofy image is about the content that makes you chuckle, and is often already not photorealistic or obviously unbelievable. An AI-created meme/joke/"Photoshop" is about the creator's idea and sense of humor, anyway. If it's good, it's good.

Their work was not stolen by AI. The training process does not copy or compress the works into the model, only a small amount of non-infringing information is learned during the training process. For example, SDXL-based models are about 6 gigabytes large, but were trained on 2 billion images, which means any given image contributed about 3 bytes of data to the model. That's not even enough data to write the title of a work, and certainly not copyrightable information.

If you're referring to the process of gathering the images in the first place, that's called scraping, and as long as images are not being obtained from under paywalls, it is legal. It has been tested in court many times and reaffirmed as legal each time. What you DO with the images after scraping them might not be legal, but that's why it's fortunate that the training process doesn't infringe on the works being trained on. Neither aspect of training represents "stealing."

What you described is not deception because its obviously not real. That is not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a photo that is not at first, or even second, or maybe any number of glances, apparent to be a fake. THat is deception. It doesn't need to be nefarious, my friend is sitting at home putting cars in various locations for his own amusement. Nothing nefarious about it. But if he were to post it on facebook without context, that is deception. They look legit.
