Publicly releasing these files before filing charges could give the rapists a procedural defense to have the charges dropped. But I guess any of them getting charged and succesfully convicted is a pipe dream ... so release them and at least let the court of public opinion damn them.

Our legal system has never really been a justice system, but under Trump, at certain levels, it is now the exact opposite of one. Lots of potential reasons other than the obvious sinister read. They don't trust them to be genuine; they don't trust them to be unedited; they don't trust them to not implicate innocent people; they don't trust them to not reveal personal information about victims.
My guess, some are considering that if prosecution could come from the files, releasing them could taint the ability to do so (which it could in various ways). Its one thing I considered. But, at the same time 'the list' if existent will never be released because the system is built to protect the affluent and will be used for blackmail to continue the path towards a tyrant dictator.
I mean personally I'm dreading whatever comes next, cause it's hard for me to imagine anything being released other than a fully invented list of democrats and disloyal republicans, and then months of people yelling about whether or not it was the real list.
