Don't think, just do and you will not drop a single avocado.

While the level of skill here is impressive can we not forget the only reason we have a human doing this and not a machine is because someone worked out that it's cheaper to get a human to do it.

Makes me sad seeing skilled workers what I would assume is a under paying job for the speed she is performing at

Is this the unskilled labor i heard so much about?

That box could buy a small island.

Knowing how I handle my tools and car keys, I'd probably drop half of them.

That would take me at least 10 mins to accomplish

Zen and the Art of Avocado Packing.

A fruit whose consumption is very harmful to the environment.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Consumption isn't harmful. Land use, production, and transport are problematic, but that's a general issue. End of the day, it's another situation where it could be more effectively managed but the people who make those decisions rarely give a shit about the longterm costs.

Consuming avocados in area they don't naturally grow increases demand, which increases water use ( they need an awful lot of water), creates a monoculture farm, and causes a great deal of pollution through transportation. So yes, consumption is the problem.

You're blaming consumers for decisions made by producers. Yes, they base their decisions on demand, but that doesn't mean they are being forced to use practices that negatively impact the world. They elect freely to cause further damage in the pursuit of profits.

I'm blaming the producers by selling them to consumers where they don't naturally grow.
But also, if consumers stopped buying them, they'd stop growing them.
And you are thinking somehow they can be grown greener. They need a lot of water, so that won't change. They need to travel globally, so that pollution won't change. Stopping consuming them is the only way to reduce the environmental impact.

Notice that “bad” and “naughty” are listed separately.

Naughty: Disobedient, disrespectful, etc.

Bad: Not good enough, poor grades, freckles, and so on…

Give that woman a raise!

2 years ago | Likes 183 Dislikes 1

I have not packed avocado, but I worked for 2 years doing repetitive food packing in a factory. This isn't amazing packing skill beyond the norm, this is just how the job is done. I, personally, would not throw them, but I'd pick up 4 per reach to pack them just to avoid the occasional miss and throwing an avocado across the room, but everybody's technique differs somewhat. I did mostly CHEEZ WHIZ. Unflatten box, fold box, 3 per reach, 12 per box, fold box, slide box. 8 hours / shift.

As for pay. I was paid well, hopefully she is also. I was making about twice minimum wage back then.

Best we can do is automate her position out.

What are you? An avocado for workers' rights?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If she's being paid piecemeal, her rate of packing IS her raise.

Trust me, a raise is somehow cheaper than having a machine and a few guys to maintain it. It comes down to speed. If she does this all the time every day slower than the product they're bringing in, then yes replace. It comes down to cutting down the bottlenecks

Are they paid by the packing rate or by the hour?

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Almost certainly not a piece rate in a place like that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

By the hour but if you don't meet your quota you're fired. And if anyone exceeds the quota, the quota is raised.

Sounds about right; We don't reward hard work, we exploit it.

welcome to capitalism. The system that a many priviliged idiots call "the best system we have" while not realising that billions are suffering because of it and the world is dying because of us.
