English Springer Spaniel named Shadow. Had more personality than most people I've known. 15 years wasn't long enough.

Mimi the murderous void from my childhood. Birds would dive bomb and tease her. She would get em. Fierce hunter and somewhat reluctant purr box.

Brindabella (Bella) - Her arsehole last family dumped her at the pound when she turned 10 because she was "too old" - she lived to be 17 and was the ultimate companion for the time I had her. Used to drag her blankie around and follow me and tell me all her little stories

German Shepard. I was 8. Watched him get hit by a car. Watched him die on a table. He was my best friend.

I have suffered traumatic loss of a few of my best animal friends too.... stories so terrible I can't tell them. But I just wanted to tell you I know how you feel and I'm sorry for your pain. You're not alone.

Thanks. It was hard for me, that's why it's so short and no details. Easily one of the worst days of my life

Niko. We were just connected. I could understand him like he could speak. Dog would have done my taxes if he'd understood how to make me happy. Used to lean into me like he wanted to merge. God I miss him.

Every dog I've had. They've all been unique and different and I mourn their loss but celebrate the time we shared. I take the experiences and try to always do better for the next.

I only had one dog in my life, but she saved mine when I was 2. Bit my butt and dragged me back from stumbling into the pool. She was a good dog.

My beautiful girl Logan, a Saarloos Wolfdog. She was 13 months when she disappeared on January 6th 2020. Despite an extensive search across the Highlands, I never found her body. She most likely tried to cross a river and drowned. I still feel guilty. A year after that horrible day, I wanted to say goodbye and get some closure. I made my way to the river, but slipped and fell on an icy track, breaking both tib and fib in my left lower leg. I miss her beyond words.

Mine is still with me but when he goes, it will break me. Never had a dog before but when I went to pick him up we locked eyes and that was it - we were meant to be together. I've never known such unconditional love and devotion as his. Everytime he sees me his face lights up in pure joy. Never knew that dogs actually smile. Never knew how much I was missing without a dog in my life until I met him. Every day with him is the best day until the day it won't be

3 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

This my husband and our dog. It will completely break him when he passes. It will break me too but I know it will be on another level for him. It’s his first dog and it was love at first sight for both of them.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There is something about your first dog that changes the way you look at love, friendship, commitment, empathy. I think it's because most of us have never received such love with no strings attached. Pups want nothing but to be loved. It's really a very special thing

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had to double check that I didn't post this myself because it's exactly how I feel about my buddy, age 9.5.

Ya our golden retriever Duncan died when I was 8. I’m 35. I will never forget him and no dog will ever live up to him. He was a ridiculously special dog. First time I saw my dad cry and didn’t see it again for many many years.

Mine is a cat. Lost her 4 years ago, aged 16 1/2, still reach down the bed for her. She kept my feet warm. Miss you Scruffy

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Got a cat when I was 7, he stuck around until I was 19 and then his kidneys started going out. Had to say goodbye, but for 15 more years, right when I was on the edge of sleep, I could feel him jump up on the bed and walk around before lying down to settle in. My wife even commented that she felt it a few times. Lasted until I was in a stable enough place I could have more pets, and I guess he figured his watch was over.

When she was alive, my first rabbit's favorite thing to do first thing in the morning was go tearing up and down the carpeted hallway outside my bedroom. For years after she died, I was dead certain she would go hopping past me whenever I was in that hallway. I think she stuck around to keep an eye on the humans she adopted, a lot like your cat did.

Molly. I gave her over to a friend of my MIL because I could no longer take care of her. I had had her since she was born and for 4 years after that. When my spouse and I became homeless, it wasn’t fair to her to be stuck in that situation. But she went to a wonderful lady who loves her just as much as we do and she had 2 new fur brothers and lots of land to play on. A couple years later we got our apartment that had a tiny “back yard” I would barely call it. We were offered to to take her back…

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

if we wanted but she was so happy where she was at, and it was gonna be some time before we could provide everything she already had at her new home. And the lady who has her adores her and Molly loves her too. It makes me cry when I miss her because she was the best dog but I’m happy knowing that she is so happy and healthy and provided for. I know I did the right thing but i havnt been able to get another pet since her.

You made the decision out of love and care, and that's often the best we can do for them.

My little baby Ginger, she was so full of life and love right until the end when she just laid down one day and never got back up again

You never let them go. They are always a part of you. You just gain more friends as time goes on. More pain as well but more friends

My sweet black lab princess, Cali. Said goodbye to her 3/27/22 and I can’t bring myself to get another critter just yet - how can any pup ever be as perfect as she is?

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Don't rush yourself; follow your heart along the grieving process. I wasn't looking for a dog at all when my soul dog found me. Sometimes, they find their way to you.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're never perfect in the same way, and it'll never be a replacement. It will be a joy and a pain unique to each life you let share the journey with you, and you'll still find shadows of her in ways you don't expect.

He grew up with me and then vanished in my teens. Never got any closure. Its awful. I still wonder. Its been.... more than 20 years.

Me too. Disappeared from my yard. Don’t know if he escaped, got stolen, or if someone let him out. I never saw him again and I think about it 40 years later.

When my parents brought me to US they told me I'd go back to visit within a year. I didnt. I never got to see my dog again or say goodbye. She was the best dog I have ever known. They never even told me when/if she died. One day I just realized that it's been so long that she probably died years ago. Some years ago, I had a dream that she was licking my face as I was laying in bed. Woke up with tears in my eyes and realized it was just a dream. Dont think I ever forgave my parents for that.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Shit, mine was similar, except I was in my early 20s when she got lost.

I feel your pain. I lost my Squeaky 2 months ago and was closer to her than I ever imagined possible with a cat. Only 14 years old (aggressive cancer paired with slow-ass vets - made her wait a month which allowed her cancer to kill her). I can't bear to put away her little pad she slept on or her toys. And I miss her purr and how she had to nuzzle up to me to sleep. I credit her for a lot of recovery in life from trauma and illness just by being there next to me all the time.

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I'm very sorry for your loss. I hope you feel that you are allowed to keep Squeaky's things out as long as you want to. It's normal to keep reminders of loved ones.

Leia. She had the most amazing mix of caramel orange mixed with black and grey. Every now and then, I see her in my dreams, and it hurts every time...

My cat Annie. She chose me when I was in 1st grade and she stayed with me until my daughter was born, then she ran off into the woods alone. She was 18 and it was 13 years ago.

Mine was a cat named October. She would come when called, followed me everywhere. Would come running whenever she heard my voice. Could jump 10 feet and climb up a tree without claws….Stayed by my side for days after a suicide attempt… Went out in our backyard one day and we found her dead. Wasn’t more that a hundred feet from the back door. Never knew what caused it. Gosh, she was too good for this world.

Mine was also a cat. But he didn't make it to 5....

I know how you feel. My old lady died approx 6 weeks ago, and I still get teary from time to time thinking about her. We bought her ashes home, and they are the most treasured thing I'll ever have apart from my three children. Been thinking about it and when I pass, its looking like I would like to be cremated and our ashes blended so I'd have her back again

Thankyou for the reminder to hug my cat

My first cat "Kittycat" (original name i know) lost her over 18 years ago. I still tell her i love her every night when i go to bed. Her collar hangs on my rear view mirror, and her rabies tags are on my keychain.

Mine was a cat, too. I don't know how old she was, but she was with me for almost 19 years. She died about 2 months after my dad, around 5 years ago.

Mine was a cat named Ozzie (1998?-2013) Very intelligent and affectionate. I still get teary-eyed if I think about him too much.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Mine was a cat as well. She was the first pet _I_ got. Not a family pet. She was 14, and I hadn't seen her since 2016 (she passed in 2001. A friend's grandparents had her. Long depressing story) I just got her ashes back yesterday. I miss her so much. I beat myself up about her so much... I... Yeah.

I had to put my cat Felix down 29 days ago. I can’t stop thinking about him. He was the littlest spoon. He learned how to shake and sit. He was my shadow, my little guy, who demanded so much attention. I miss him sooo much 😭

Mine is my pitbull. She is still with us but 13 now. So I know my years are numbered and wish I could spend every second with her. I love her so much I will never fully get over losing her. I have had her since she was 4 to 6 weeks old. She is everything to me. Best dog ever.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine passed unexpectedly when she was only 8 three years ago. I was an absolute fucking wreck. Still not over her tbh. The first face I saw in the morning and the last when I went to sleep. I've loved all of my pets but she was on a different level than the rest. I miss her terribly.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine was close to that age when she got out while I was away. I found her as a kitten and had her for 16 years. I probably would have woke up one morning and found her dead within a couple years but instead one day I just never saw again. Still haven't decided if that was better or worse.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same. Cinnamon was my last gift to my mom before she died. She was a kitten in that final year of post-stroke brain damage abuse and was very timid because of it. 3yrs later started to be more social. She was the one consistency through a decade of housing instability and I promised her I would never give her up. She passed away late January this year at 15 1/2. She traveled with me around PA, NJ, MI, MN, and OH and was the reason I came out to CA by car since she would have hated planes.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

She was a Siamese, and I spent over a month looking for a new Siamese for that same meezer loyalty. I finally found Sokka right before I went in for major reconstructive rib surgery and he's been my new support meezer.
