I'm so glad Dalmatians are recovering from the cartoon. Such a beautiful breed.

Why do his ears look like my parents fighting?

My wife and I saw one at a park and it was almost all black with white spots. It occurred to me we might be getting it wrong, but they're actually black with white patches

Cute puppy. Aren't Dalmatians known to be bad tempered little shits and may be in reality more dangerous to humans than Pitbulls are thought to be?

Aside from all the bad breeding, and tendency to be willful, they are more prone to being deaf than most breeds, which is not something new dog owners can handle.

Chihuahuas are more dangerous than put bulls. Its the assholes that breed put bulls and fight them that have given those dogs a bad rap.

No they're not. They may bite more often but their bite is a nuisance, not fatal

A whole lot of breeds are more likely to attack than the average pit bull. It’s just our kids have the jaws of death so when they do bite they freaking mean it.

Mine is a gentle little lamb unless you’re a cardboard box or bully stick.

I've always heard that, too. They just get a pass because they're more famous as fire dogs.

I grew up with one and am still so traumatized that I won't go near dalmatians today. I can recall the dog tried to attack me when I was 8 years old because I dared reach into his bed to grab a card of mine that he was ripping apart. He died after eating through a big box full of hot cocoa mix intended as a scout fundraiser that he grabbed from on top of a 6' tall bookshelf.

All to say, the dog was probably not trained nor given the daily stimulation the breed requires.

This was from massive inbreeding in puppy farms after the cartoon spiked their popularity, otherwise they are just dogs. Find one with proper breeding permits and you'll get a normal, lovable little doofus. (They aren't the brightest breed, but at least they aren't terrified of leaves?)

I've certainly heard of a lot of bad tempered ones, at least. Their issue is the movie, really. Every time 101 Dalmatians gets released or redone, there's a surge in demand for the breed so backyard breeders & puppy mills will churn them out, without a single care about the animals they're breeding or their breeding suitability.

Yeah, any time a cute pet movie a bunch of morons go out and buy that animal.

I have a Dalmatian and she’s a great doggy. Yes she’s strong willed but she’s a very loving dog. Like many breeds, it comes down to training.

By personal experience, yes. The only time I had something of a close call was with a Dalmatian. A sample size of 1, but still.

All the ones I have met have also been beyond stupid. Which is funny to me because they are the "firefighter dog." I wouldn't let one near a birthday candle nevermind a house fire.

Babysat a friends dalmatian for 1 week. dumbest dog ever and had to be on leash at all times because she was aggressive towards other dogs.

IIRC, dalmatians got their reputation as fire department dogs because they were originally bred to accompany coaches with teams of horses and to scare animals and pedestrians away from the horses. The first fire wagons were horse-drawn, so firefighters used dalmatians to scatter people and wandering dogs our of the way ahead of the fire wagons. Dalmatians were bred to be bad-tempered bodyguards.

Also, a lot are deaf.

Proper training from the day you bring the pup home is essential. Get professional assistance with it. And make sure the pup is well socialized around people and other dogs.

They can turn nasty with improper training or a lack of socialization. My family was breeding Dalmatians for years, we had very few problems reported.
