Correct! I think the "orange fur" and "dark fur" genes live in the same place on the X chromosome, so generally only XX cats can display both colors.

That's the right scale. It's small because the X chromosome is also associated with sexual development; nearly all males have XY, and the Y chromosome doesn't have this color-coding gene location.

That's about what they're saying, yes, but not limited to "calico." Calico's orange, red and white; white is unrelated to the genes in question (separate spotting gene). Tortoiseshell cats, which are mottled black (or dilute) and orange (or dilute) have the same genetic situation of X-linked color genes
