I tried to sit down and finally watch this movie, but I often feel secondhand embarrassment and the inciting incident was too much for me. It took the guy admitting to a crime he had no idea he was admitting to to get me to switch to something else. I watched the Wonder Man show instead.

You know, when you think about it, there must be some WILD conspiracy theories around Earth First Contact, when you consider how it actually went down. With the borg and the time travel. Like, up to a point, everything will be known and documents, Cochrane, Lilly, the dude at the bar. EVERYTHING. Then at the most important point, a LOT of stuff suddenly get's super vague. Who were the guys he went up with? What happened to the sensor logs from the Phoenix? Where the hell was Lilly?

Then to cap it all off, Cohrane himself mysteriously just dissappears one day, only be discovered later by Kirk! (and event that never got any follow through, it's not like he died in the episode either, he's still out there potentially.)
The conspiracy theories about it, by the 25th century must be NUTS. I wonder if Starfleet ever actually filled the blanks in after the E came back after First Contact?

I always had a problem with that scene of My Cousin Vinny...
It's not like you can't just retrofit a car because you want newer wheels or different style of tires that you couldn't use otherwise... and that's assuming the rims are different dimensions. Like what if the '78 uses tubeless and the '65 uses tubed and you want the better thermal properties and lower rolling resistance of tubeless. You can't JUST use tubeless tires, they won't seal, you have to swap the rims too.

in my early poor man's driving days I'd use re-threads cause no money, and they'd be bad, so sometimes had to add tubes so they'd stay hard! change the mags? ROFL nah... (I know, I don't know how I live with myself either) -but yeah on an old mitsi mirage, not a sports car!

The crux of the argument wasnt if the boys did or didnt kill the clerk, it was to prove the evidence used against them to support the charges were wrong or unreliable. Technically at the end of the movie they werent even proved that they didnt kill the clerk, the court was made aware that a more plausible culprit(s) matching the boy's description and situation were caught in another state with the murder weapon.

like for example: it takes place in the 90s, we're expected to believe a car from '65 still has the OEM, factory installed tires?
And if a prosecutor is going to try to use the tire tracks as evidence, they should be inspecting the car's tires to make sure they actually match.

Car tires aren't unique to models or years of car. They're off the shelf from tire manufacturers.

Regardless of the facts of the case and why you'd question why a car has 20+ year old tires, the facts of the case are the facts of the case. The persecutor's goal is to convince the jury that the tires being a match is enough to make it evidence and not think beyond that. And the defending lawyer (Vinny) arguing that the tires being a match wasn't sufficient enough evidence, by not only arguing that the tires were the most popular model of tires sold on the market to dismiss the tires as-

Evidence, but also use the "expert" testimony that the car they had couldn't have made those tracks in the way in the photo. Vinny's whole character and point was he could pick apart evidence and testimonies by presenting conflicting information. If he wasn't good at arguing and spinning the conversation to his favor, the the poor "evidence" would have been enough to convict the boys.

That's not generally how competent prosecutors work, because they have to be anticipating the defense's potential strategies to counter the evidence
