You don't need that extra space if you start reversing from where the rear bumpers are aligned.

I thought I was great at parallel parking until I dated a Parisian. She could squeeze in anywhere. I think she may have been a wizard.
They are known for that in all of Europe. They are also known for having dents in the front and back of the car. Or the sides.Or all around.

Parallel parking is easy when people don't park like assholes and only leave half a car length between them and an obstacle.
Parallel parking is easy. Period.
-5 currently. Well, 6 people admitted they failed to learn an easy skill :)
I think about 24 people admitted people park like assholes.
Some people do park like assholes. Majority does park rather ok. Anyway, someone parking like assholes won't excuse others bad parking.
No it means less available parking, and people having to try and squeeze into spots that should easily accommodate them, or park elsewhere.
Niddhoger
But where is the part where you smash both bumpers of hte other cars? Having lived in NYC for a time, this is apparently a crucial part!

not in the US anyway. I had 2 lessons and got my license. Lessons were mostly spent driving around SF talking about instructors life.

JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
I'm 19 and do it all the time. Your need to do it is entirely based on where you need to go, and what parking is available
McMikio
Yeap. 40 here and parallel park at least once a week.
DavidBowiesBulgeInLabyrinth
Unpopular opinion incoming: I love parallel parking. It feels like geometry.
I love it too. I bought a mini because I go into the city a ton and I can park anywhere, it's great.
YerAGrizzardArry
In NZ you have to parallel park to pass your licence test. Haven't done it since.
HybridAndDankDuck
It's also mandatory on a finnish driving licence
antielovena
I did it in my test and haven't done ever since. Which was 35 years ago. I am not proud of my skills :(
d3vilsavocado
Yep, same. I used to be mean as at parallel parking, but then I finally passed my restricted and haven't done it since.
Me too bro. Practiced for an hour each night to prepare for the test and now I actively avoid using a skill I spent ages perfecting.
Yeah, I failed my first restricted test, had an emotional break down, adopted a cat, returned her the next day /1
2/ but the thing I was most pissed about, was that my parallel park was goddamn perfect.
Same in Canada except I live near a big city so I do have to do it fairly often.
They never taught us it in drivers ed nor taking the test in Mississippi... had to learn via trail by fire in college.
They might be part of your test in Denmark, but i was lucky and didn't have to do it
They took it off my state's test a week before I went in for it.
LadyWidebottom
I had to do it in my lessons in Australia, but it wasn't part of my test thankfully.
AliBarber
Yeah cos hand brake turns are WAY more fun
Muttons1337
If Need For Speed and Fast&Furious have taught me anything, that's the only way to park! Also cars apparently have like 10-20 gears.
adriedupoldprune
Its getting that way but with automatics, ford and gm partnered on a 10 speed auto transmission that seem to want to put in everything.
In the UK it used to be 3 maneuvers, and the instructor would choose which 2 you had to do.
Buh, brain fart there. Instructor should be examiner.
PazuzuFromThatFuturama
It's now just one manoeuvre, I had parallel park as mine in January.
I did all 3 due to taking my test more then once when I did it.. getting on for 23 years ago, hence "used to". I haven't checked recently ;)
Vick4rs
Yeah many people disagree with them taking out the u-turn. I'm lazy. Most streets connect in a square block. I'll just go around.
The bootleg turn is much better.
That depends on the area.. around me, going around will often add a mile or so to your trip.
You mean turning in the road (3 point turn when I took my test)? A u turn is a different thing..
U-turn is less letters I was running out so yea 3 point turn. At least city-driving most streets connect. Country driving doesn't work obv
Toastfrog
Well I've had my licence for more then 10 years and I did not have to do a parallel park to pass mine...in nz yes
I goofed; they get you to do a three point turn or a similar maneuver if there's no opportunity to parallel park.
Oh yep they made me do a 3 point turn.. I went to use a drive way and he yelled at me that I'm not allowed to use the drive way..
eicerrus
Lol I think I got the same guy. So I did it 3 meters down from the drive way. Literally everything was the same..
In the '70s, my dad just had to drive around the block because the weather was shot and the instructor couldn't be bothered.

26, so far. Same.
MomoLillia
You don't live in an apartment or in a city
ThisAintASurfinMovie
You would literally have to use public transportation in Europe, then. Or have half of your car sticking out of the spot.
Cheomesh
I can think of exactly one place near me where you need to do it, and it's terrible parking spot anyways.
JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
I'm 19 and do it all the time. Your need to do it is entirely based on where you need to go, and what parking is available
McMikio
ChloeRed
Yeap. 40 here and parallel park at least once a week.
DavidBowiesBulgeInLabyrinth
Unpopular opinion incoming: I love parallel parking. It feels like geometry.
JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
I love it too. I bought a mini because I go into the city a ton and I can park anywhere, it's great.
YerAGrizzardArry
In NZ you have to parallel park to pass your licence test. Haven't done it since.
HybridAndDankDuck
It's also mandatory on a finnish driving licence
antielovena
I did it in my test and haven't done ever since. Which was 35 years ago. I am not proud of my skills :(
d3vilsavocado
Yep, same. I used to be mean as at parallel parking, but then I finally passed my restricted and haven't done it since.
YerAGrizzardArry
Me too bro. Practiced for an hour each night to prepare for the test and now I actively avoid using a skill I spent ages perfecting.
d3vilsavocado
Yeah, I failed my first restricted test, had an emotional break down, adopted a cat, returned her the next day /1
d3vilsavocado
2/ but the thing I was most pissed about, was that my parallel park was goddamn perfect.
zFUBARz
Same in Canada except I live near a big city so I do have to do it fairly often.
Niddhoger
They never taught us it in drivers ed nor taking the test in Mississippi... had to learn via trail by fire in college.
Visiblur
They might be part of your test in Denmark, but i was lucky and didn't have to do it
Cheomesh
They took it off my state's test a week before I went in for it.
LadyWidebottom
I had to do it in my lessons in Australia, but it wasn't part of my test thankfully.
AliBarber
Yeah cos hand brake turns are WAY more fun
Muttons1337
If Need For Speed and Fast&Furious have taught me anything, that's the only way to park! Also cars apparently have like 10-20 gears.
adriedupoldprune
Its getting that way but with automatics, ford and gm partnered on a 10 speed auto transmission that seem to want to put in everything.
ChloeRed
In the UK it used to be 3 maneuvers, and the instructor would choose which 2 you had to do.
ChloeRed
Buh, brain fart there. Instructor should be examiner.
PazuzuFromThatFuturama
It's now just one manoeuvre, I had parallel park as mine in January.
ChloeRed
I did all 3 due to taking my test more then once when I did it.. getting on for 23 years ago, hence "used to". I haven't checked recently ;)
Vick4rs
Yeah many people disagree with them taking out the u-turn. I'm lazy. Most streets connect in a square block. I'll just go around.
adriedupoldprune
The bootleg turn is much better.
ChloeRed
That depends on the area.. around me, going around will often add a mile or so to your trip.
ChloeRed
You mean turning in the road (3 point turn when I took my test)? A u turn is a different thing..
Vick4rs
U-turn is less letters I was running out so yea 3 point turn. At least city-driving most streets connect. Country driving doesn't work obv
Toastfrog
Well I've had my licence for more then 10 years and I did not have to do a parallel park to pass mine...in nz yes
YerAGrizzardArry
I goofed; they get you to do a three point turn or a similar maneuver if there's no opportunity to parallel park.
Toastfrog
Oh yep they made me do a 3 point turn.. I went to use a drive way and he yelled at me that I'm not allowed to use the drive way..
eicerrus
Lol I think I got the same guy. So I did it 3 meters down from the drive way. Literally everything was the same..
YerAGrizzardArry
In the '70s, my dad just had to drive around the block because the weather was shot and the instructor couldn't be bothered.
