It's unfortunate but a decent amount of system cooling comes out through the keyboard, so this is unsurprising..

you've probably never worked in an office then :D like 90% of all businesses use setups with laptops, maybe not setups as dumb as this one

I had a setup sorta like this for a time, out of necessity. My laptop screen started going on the fritz, so I had to hook it up to my (1/2)

monitor and then use an external mouse and keyboard. (2/2)

that's not the oddity here. the oddity is that the lid is constantly open. laptop-dock setups are very, very common in businesses

Not even that. We use the laptop screen + two monitors, the laptop is on top of the desk however. Never have too many screens.

please enlighten me. what practical use does a vertically mounted laptop underneath the desk have?

there's no desktop pc. I'm guessing if you close the lid, the desktop monitor would go dark too. You can see the laptop has a vga 1/2

cable coming out of it and the wireless dongle for the mouse and keyboard. 2/2

"Choose What Closing the Lid Does" in control panel would fix that issue.
