When I was a kid I never understood why my dad would not let me have a toy gun. He instead took me to the range and taught me how to shoot but most importantly he taught me firearm safety. So when I hear on the news that a police officer shot and killed a boy with a toy gun and people are outraged with the Police it really frustrates me.
Then there are sickos that do this... Looks like a toy right??
Wrong.
(Sorry for low quality)
It was a REAL shotgun disguised as a squirt gun. Just think how that could used in a bad way.
Now people are carrying these around?! I'm all for concealed carry but these are a cops nightmare.
I don't mean to start a pissing contest about gun rights, anti-police or #blacklivesmatter so say what you will...
mdzmdz
If your thoughts on seeing a child with an object are that he may kill you with it then you have societal problems not gun colour problems
PeterMus
My issue isn't that police are human. My issue is that de-esculation is more likely to get you fired than promoted.
Kiwiwhovian
Just read a newstory that police in Tulsa gunned down an unarmed black dad who had his hands in the air. His car had broken down. He died :(
AimForTheBushes
Maybe they were still tense from all the toy guns that could be real? (Joking)

Are you saying it's impossible to spray paint a real glock orange, or what?
Sirrussel5
No. He's saying that they're not commercially available, or widely used.
Bortus
Speaking from literally no experience, isnt it common for gun-enthusiasts to paint their guns? https://www.instagram.com/wtfsrq/
zagibu
Real glocks or spray paint cans?
Sirrussel5
Pre-painted orange glocks. Find me one case of someone spraying glock orange and committing a crime, or stop trying to twist words.
zagibu
The point I was trying to get across, is that saying "it's a joke image" doesn't really help, because what it displays is easy to make.

Check your local laws, you might be able to get a collecters permit. Most countries don't outright ban guns, they just require licenses.

for decoration purposes and on larger guns it can be done to shave weight off
jimcake
I'm against ownership of any gun not intended for hunting. Worried about break ins? Get an alarm. Worried about murder? Safe room + alarm
jimcake
I'm for having them available at ranges, but you're not going to be able to take on the government with guns & killing someone changes you
CaptSheffield
I'll send you the bill for my safe room? And my daughters? I'll get started right away.
wererat2000
Yes, an alarm. So you can have the police arrive after you've been robbed and/or killed. You don't need to use a gun to defend yourself.
jimcake
I'd choose being robbed over the burden of killing somebody. Being murdered in your home is a statistically irrational fear and usually 1/2

nice collector's piece. but there is no sense at all in having a gun disguised as a toy in public, especially not to point at cops.

OnlyBegottenDaughter

MoreCowBellBaby

TheArrestingAbhorrentArrantAbominableAlliterator
I love that, but it can be shorter; "There is no sense in having a gun disguised as a toy." Guns aren't toys. Love guns. (1/2)
TheArrestingAbhorrentArrantAbominableAlliterator
The inevitable argument is that you have fun with gun therefore toy. But you can have fun with cars. And they *really* aren't toys.(1.5/2)

A misused airgun can easily maim a human, or worse. A recreational tool != A toy.
Tunaccat
No doubt. I've seen many an airgun bb lodged in people's arms.

LazyLexiconographer

JimHeckler
A simple solution for a simple mind.
MikeLittoris
Care to explain?
JimHeckler
I just mean that not allowing most people to have guns is an oversimplified solution that doesn't address the issues causing the violence. 1
JimHeckler
For example there are lots of places where guns aren't freely available and now people just stab each other. I just mean we need to deal 2
FinValkyria
Humans are fucking simpletons for the most part. Some idiots even think that pointing a gun at an officer shouldn't get you shot.
MikeLittoris
And you want those simpletons to be able to carry a loaded gun around you and your children?
FinValkyria
How you could have reached that conclusion from my comment is completely beyond me.
LazyLexiconographer
Says the human in a generalized and meaningless way.
FinValkyria
Yep, I acknowledge I'm not wicked smart. Your point? I'm still not shoving a real looking gun in the face of an armed officer.

Toothlessgiraffe
Thats a strawman. Both Russia (by far) and Mexico has less firearms related homicides than US.
EdgelordPrime
You forgot Brazil. Actually, it's hard to know how Russia does with firearm deaths because they don't differentiate. What they do have is-
EdgelordPrime
twice the homicide rate of the US with less than half of the population. In regards to Mexico, you're completely wrong; Mexico's-
tuxedobob
If people would obey the meaning of the colors, kids wouldn't get shot for wielding toys.
NobodyLurksLikeGaston

Sirrussel5
"Need" to be shot? Didn't realize America did away with due process.
NobodyLurksLikeGaston
In practice they never really had it because people value their guns more. Don't pose a threat and you should be fine
KeeleonOhms
If someone is breaking into my house and threatening my family they have made their decision about "due process".
Sirrussel5
I have no qualms with you shooting someone breaking into your home. You most definitely have a right to protect yourself and your family.
FinValkyria
How could anyone forget the pre-shooting court session is beyond me.
Sirrussel5
Right.
LazyLexiconographer
Yes, each and every person who ignores and or accepts the consequences of presenting an unjustified deadly threat needs to be shot.
Sirrussel5
What of the people who presented no such threat and were shot anyway? Did they deserve to be shot? You assume too much of what I believe.
Sirrussel5
I'm not arguing for people who aim guns at police you fucking clown.

There is a picture of the gum the kid was holding, and I watched the video; you can't hold the officers at too much fault.
Bryanalt77
TIL a young child pointing a gun at a police officer is a mistake that they should pay for with their life
Laszarus
Natural selection
Bryanalt77
I hope my kids or your kids aren't rambunctious then never know. That's the reality, it could be you next
cleverbeans
Rambunctious? I think you mean armed and brandishing. That's well beyond a little playtime.
FrappuchinoFabuloso
Sometimes you don't have the luxury of taking the risk.
Bryanalt77
So a 9 year old deserves to die because of a stupid immature game? Police can't take 1 minute out of their day to take a look?
lysani
https://youtu.be/X3Wp6RIwfTI?t=530 It's a simulator, but it shows how quickly you have to make that decision.
FrappuchinoFabuloso
A nine year old, a man with a family, who deserves to live in that situation. Its not an easy choice.
Bryanalt77
A 9 year old child being a kid doing stupid shit. Police take 5 seconds or less to decide what to do
Bryanalt77
You're assuming they both can't live, why choose???? That's the worst comment I've ever seen putting a police officer who's job it is, over
FrappuchinoFabuloso
A child is just as deadly with a gun as an adult. In that moment the cop has to choose to risk everything in the hopes he doesn't get shot
FrappuchinoFabuloso
Both can easily live and should, but it requires not pointing weapons at people who don't want to die and are prepared to ensure they dont
flyingpinklobster
"1 minute" can get you killed when guns are involved
Bryanalt77
So it's too hard for an officer to look at the suspect and see its a child or young kid? 6 months of training can't cover that I guess
flyingpinklobster
No one deserves to die, but police officers deserve to have the right of self defense
Bryanalt77
If the gun is fake there's no danger......and taking 30 seconds they could realize that but it's too much work for officers
flyingpinklobster
They could also be dead. Police officers are targets for gang members and criminals. As shown, it's not 100% safe to assume that the gun is
mineovermatter
What if it were a real gun? Sorry, you point a deadly weapon at someone, they're justified in deadly force to protect themselves.
Bryanalt77
Real gun much different situation, but even then they shouldn't assume people are just opening fire on the cops the second they see them
30Jonseredi
As somebody not from America these constant gun rants and such seem so absurd
Reece29
As someone from America, I find them equally absurd.
KyllerQueen
As a gun owner, they are absurd. The problem is too much difference between state and federal laws when it comes to guns. (1/2)
KyllerQueen
I live in MA - if I traveled to NY with the same certification & license, I would be arrested and charged with a felony. Just because.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. And then yeah, the cops see weapons everywhere, because everything's a weapon.
dEdGrimley
And then they think they're constantly under threat. So then they shoot people when they shouldn't. So people get sneakier guns. Terrible.
RaziGrey
the point of the"squirt" gun is to cause hesitation. that split second of indecision is enough for jamal, jose or james to cap a cop and run

theboned1
They need to stop making kids gun that look like real guns. Because all kids are stupid, and some adults too.
StarrrryNight
They need to stop making real guns look like kids guns.
pringlesyum

That's only half the issue though. People can still disguise their actual weapon as a toy weapon, as per the super soaker shotgun above

so same thing with phone guns? Maybe my right hand is really a prosthesis with a gun, he shouldn't take any chances...
teamyolosweg
So ban guns so the cop won't have reason to believe you have live weapon
Laszarus
Banning guns doesn't mean every gun is instantly destroyed, there will still be a lot of criminals with guns, and children with toy guns.
llortamai
You understand that having something doesn't make it disappear, right? See drugs or alcohol during prohibition. Just creates black market.

I guess I just mean that in the same sense that a responsible gun owner feels "hunted" for the actions of murderers; I'm doing everything-

samsonguy920

Sabre2087
I would honestly like to hear the thought process of the people that point fake guns at the cops. Or point anything at them for that matter.
Tunaccat
I genuinely believe a ton of black people don't understand how to be arrested. They resist, then badly trained cops kill them for it.
Tunaccat
And to be fair, anytime you fight with a cop, the cop must logically assume it's a fight to the death.
Tunaccat
"Why is it always a fight to death?" Because there's a gun (cop's) involved in the fight. The stakes could not be higher.
NobodyLurksLikeGaston
No because there could be guns involved on the party that shouldn't even fucking be carrying one. Noone but law enforcement should have guns
Tunaccat
That's literally what I said. If the cop is overpowered, the suspect can grab their gun and end their life. Therefore every fight is L or D.
HanShotFirst39
Well, the kid that recently did this used the fake gun to commit a robbery first.
judocop
You're assuming that they actually think about the consequences of their actions. They don't. If they did, they wouldn't be criminals.

"Fuck the police"

The problem is when cops don't bother to say that and just shoot

Eclaircissement
Tried to find a story of a kid shooting a cop. Tried different search terms. Nada. Apparently it doesn't happen.
biolologist
Try it the other way around if you want hits.
Eclaircissement
Even when I searched "teen kills officer" every result was a cop killing somebody.
xthetenth
Wow that's some on the nose phrasing.
Tunaccat
But carrying guns in public is (mostly) legal? Why don't we hear about rednecks being shot? I'm genuinely asking.
Kerberos623
There's a difference between carrying holstered and brandishing. And state laws. And interacting with police.
VeeTheGee
Because people aren't pointing it at cops, I'd guess.
Tunaccat
As someone from rural Vermont, I have to say that drunk rednecks do all the time. My neighbor was shooting his gun off at 2am.Hewas arrested
KyllerQueen
Depends on what state you live in. I cannot open carry, just conceal carry. No ones I have it. It reduces panic and potential issues.
KyllerQueen
*no one knows

The supersoaker shotgun was a hoax @OP. I agree with your sentiment but people who don't would use that to discredit your argument. 1/

Regardless of whether or not that picture is a hoax, it shows that it is possible to disguise a shotgun as a toy.
BluBoxx
Easier to disguise a shotgun as... Nothing... By concealing it in your coat.... 2/2

Why? It's not illegal to own a shotgun, and there is literally only one recorded incidence of anything like that ever being found. Much 1:

It may be illegal for a specific person to own a shotgun, transport it in a car, or over state lines/national borders.
LazyLexiconographer
Oh no a person is holding a real weapon, but not arousing suspicious because they are not acting threatening . . .
BluBoxx
Happens in lots of places "open carry" and all. It's also much easier to conceal a gun in a coat than as an impractical unwieldy monstrosity
LazyLexiconographer
Brandishing laws are intended to keep jerks from using weapons to threaten others. When charged outside of that context it is inappropriate
Fishworshipper
So that you might openly brandish it without (as much) suspicion, obviously. The picture shows why a cop might see any "gun" as a real gun.
LazyLexiconographer
You folks are so paranoid about things you imagine might be scary.
Fishworshipper
I personally am not. However, I am capable of understanding why others ight be.
BluBoxx
A grown ass man not at a pool is going to arouse suspicion with a big impractical water gun... Again, just conceal one in a coat...
Fishworshipper
The picture is an EXAMPLE of what's possible, not the only possibility. Also having a long hard death-rod in your coat can be unwieldy.
Fishworshipper
See ow, but what if one wanted to use it at a pool? plenty of people at a pool. Or how about disguising a different weapon differently? 1/2
meaculpa91
The kid he's talking about, Tamir Rice, was shot IMMEDIATELY with no attempt from the police to communicate. He was 12 years old.

gun in hand, walking toward cops....
Kerberos623
I do belive he is talking about the new incident in ohio(Tyree King,). and not tamir. black bb gun pointed at cops after chase for robbers.
cleverbeans
He did get up and approach the vehicle with his weapon drawn as the cops arrived. They had a reasonable concern for their safety.
meaculpa91
Yeah. He was also fucking twelve.
CommanderWilliamTRiker
Yeah?
cleverbeans
Every week a toddler kills someone with a gun in the US. Being 12 doesn't make him less dangerous. It's tragic, but why he'd have the gun?
meaculpa91
Of course I forgot, we should be okay for police to kill toddlers too
meaculpa91
Why did a child have a toy gun?
cleverbeans
An airsoft gun is not a toy. They're often designed to mimic real firearms and can shoot. He should never of had the gun in the first place.
dancelikeyousharted
It's obvious that pointing any kind of gun at a police officer gets you shot, so people continuing to do it is natural selection in action.
Irishda
Unless they're white. And boy have I got a list for you

What about people who aren't pointing it at anyone, just merely holding it.

I haven't been keeping up on this but didn't the police report say that the kid was running from the cops and had the gun in his pants?
TheGhostofLionelHutz
I'm of the opinion that open carry an already hard job damn near impossible for even the best cops.
HypnotoadIRL
How?
TheGhostofLionelHutz
Because in a 2 seconds to evaluate, it's very difficult to determine whether someone carrying a gun is a threat or not.
HypnotoadIRL
So everyone should hide their gun instead. That reduces the risk somehow?
jackmiton
Pointing toys at cops does infact NOT get you shot in the vast majority of the world. Does in USA ofc, you guys have fun with that...
FinValkyria
Probably has something to do with how obvious the toy is. A real-looking airsoft gun will very likely get you shot.
jackmiton
Given those are also effectively banned in Australia, not likely.
FinValkyria
So let's say I point a real-looking firearm at an Aussie cop. How do you imagine they would know if it is a real weapon or airsoft one?
jackmiton
you dont get it, that isnt a thing here. at all.

True, but it's very easy to get shot by cops even when you're not a threat. The kid in Ohio died while running away from the cops.

What a horrifying thing to say. His family just lost a child. You need to get a serious grip.

Being a child doesn't make someone incapable of being deadly.

BUT HE WAS A GOOD BOY
DrArbitrary
Clearly, since guns can be disguised as phones, having anything pointing in any direction near a police officer could get you shot.
DarkwingDuc
TBF, for the phone-gun to fire, the pistol grip has to be pulled down exposing the trigger. At that point it's pretty obvious it's a gun.
pastramionrye
Or nothing at all if you're a minority. Source: news: Two unarmed black men with their hands in the air were shot within the last 3 months.

If a kid doesn't know any better than he shouldn't have the toy. We had a no toy guns rule in our house because hey, guns aren't toys.

Then it is 100% the parents fault to many kids are killing with guns to say a kid isn't a threat when they are. Teach your kid no gun is toy

They don't, true. But it does decrease the risk of these events repeating.

Hugoduckandweaving
Yeah. That makes me sad. But yeah.

I don't think a cop should take a bullet just because his attacker is mentally ill. Still he shouldn't shoot unless the gun is aimed at him.

No a cop shouldn't be shot cus of that. However that is the cost of Americans having guns so available.

The gun doesn't just shoot if it's pointed at the cop. Wildfire is a serious threat that needs to be contained.

That sounds appropriate. I know in some places at least they're required to account for every shot fired, but it is abused by bad cops.

Please revisit my previous statement.
KyllerQueen
Incorrect again. There are 340,000 gun owners in MA. It is also one of the safest places to live. Thanks.
cleverbeans
Also, owning a gun makes you more likely to be the victim of gun crime, gun accidents and suicide. There is no benefit to gun ownership.
KyllerQueen
2014, there was 291,396 gun owners in MA, why was there zero rifle deaths and 33 handgun related deaths?
cleverbeans
Because cherry-picking anecdotal evidence can be used to justify anything. You need proper methodology and statistics to reach a conclusion.
cleverbeans
Safest places in the US you mean, but that's a very low standard. MA is not a safe place compared to most of the developed world.
KyllerQueen
You cannot compare the US to most "developed" countries in this instance. Your argument is flawed completely.
cleverbeans
American exceptionalism is trite. Of course we can compare you to other countries because Americans are just as capable as everyone else.
agreatfuckinusername
Whereas Chicago is a "gun free zone" with a very high murder rate
KyllerQueen
Harvard Law did a great study about more guns = more death. Less guns = less death across the US and other nations.
KyllerQueen
They found that there is zero evidence that is true.
cleverbeans
You should reread that paper because that is not the conclusion they reach at all. Also, they only consider murder rates not all gun crime.
realinterrobang
How about cops stop shooting people until they're absolutely sure the person is actually a threat? Non-US cops do it all the time.
downvoter5000
How bout said people stop acting like idiots when dealing with the police? Problem solved. Orrrr better yet, just stop committing crimes!
cleverbeans
Non-US cops don't have to deal with the second amendment. It's different when you must assume everyone has access to deadly force.
StarrrryNight
Almost proves how asinine it is.
cleverbeans
Oh it's definitely asinine. I'd encourage you to look into the rights of the blind to carry. Turns out they're safer than the sighted.
SomewhatOxygenated
Most non-US cops don't live in a country where guns are super common. Even if criminals in the UK have guns they rarely risk the escalation.
berkshire27
Super easy to say, near impossible to be sure under pressure in a high risk, high speed situation. Milliseconds to analyze and act.
Orion1189
That's what they're supposed to be trained for. It may be easier said than done, but if they can't manage it, then they shouldn't be cops.
ogdrujahad
That's why we train cops. If our military can follow an escalation of force while under deadly threat, so can our police.

What do you think you're proving, here? Did the cops recover that from a gangster? Maybe not, but who cares? It clearly illustrates how (1)

easily a deadly weapon can be made to look like a toy. Scroll further in that article, and you'll see an actual example of a gun (2)
