Trump only knows one thing vaguely well--Wall St. He knows that the best way to beat it like a piñata is for the numbers to go up or down quickly. You either go long or you go short, but you make money either way. It's hard to make things go up quickly, but it's VERY easy to make things go to shit overnight. And what I saw in 2020 was the set up to a very nasty implosion of the economy. The only people to profit would have been the short sellers, but they would have owned the world in the end.

The US exports *certain* oil-derived / refined products - for example jet fuel - that it’s only able to manufacture *because* it imports so much of its domestic crude oil needs.
When the cost of oil imported from Canada suddenly goes way up for no good reason, all those American companies exporting oil products will need to jack up their prices to compensate, making their exports harder to sell.

It's not a wash, it's a transfer from a progressive tax system (those with more to spare pay a larger proportion of the tax) to a regressive tax system (those with less to spare pay a similar or larger proportion of the tax).
The poor will have less money left over after paying for necessities, while the rich will have more left over after paying for necessities.

I wouldn't say that, that's the point of tariffs in the first place, but you'd have to have hefty ones in place to make it comparable, and it makes it comparable by making foreign shit hella expansive, not domestic goods more affordable. Plus you have the issue of wanting to use tariffs as a blanket instead of a needle, which, in a globally integrated supply chain..... Let's just say it's a bold strategy Cotton.

The stupidest thing ever though is Canada sells the crude oil to the US to be processed (because our dumb ass leadership don't have the foresight to make our own refineries) so that it is sold back to us as refined fuel which makes our gas prices essentially twice as much as they are in the US on average but the raw crude was extracted right here in Canada so it should be cheaper.

I think MAYBE that’s from their assumption (or assertion) that in order to sell products in America, manufacturers will bring manufacturing jobs back to America from where they exported it to. But the fun kicker is he knows his friends who own those companies or their umbrella corps are just gonna move to countries like Vietnam or Brazil where we’ll have lower or no tariffs. No one is willingly bringing factories back to America with our EPA standards and such, it’s too expensive to build
