EDIT: Monday Frontpage once more! Thank you very much, Imgurians! Normally I do reviews as a hobby, but today, I analyzed Hideo Kojima's directing and writing! You can check the first part here https://youtu.be/rGOpjZGEPJA

By hand
Kenbamazingbutprobablywontbe
I wrote an entire essay on a dragonlance novel i spent 2 weeks drawing a poster for. Didnt read the book other than a few pages. Nabbed a solid 80 because my art was amazing.
Rubyrose99
I once saw John Wick write 3 essays on a bar napkin... with a pencil. A fucking PENCIL.
AtmaDarkwolf
LOL that is actually fact. I remember writing a 5-6 page essay, single spaced both sides of page, based only on the description a friend told me (And he was somewhat off) - I still managed a somewhat decent passing grade (Lost marks on penmanship, spelling, and some lost points i obviously never read)
Bohrdumb
I have a BA in English. I don't think I ever finished reading a single book.
ItTookMeAGoodWhileToComeUpWithAUsername
What can you do, with a BA in English? What is my life going to be? Four years of college and plenty of knowledge. (Not sure if that’s the correct lyrics)
lovethemutts
With a pen, AND in cursive!

IN A CA- well, not a cave, but it felt like that sometimes.
BrokenAnimal
Once for a litterary assignment about the book "Bend it like Beckham" I forgot the deadline and had to deliver the next day. I figured I'd never have time to both read the book and write the assignment, so I rented the movie, watched that, read the Cliffnotes online, wrote the paper and got it approved.
zeacorzeppelin10
Bend It Like Beckham is a book!
BrokenAnimal
Indeed it is.
I didn't know either before the assignment.
TrainsDeluxe
is she actually a lesbian in the book, I remember feeling like the movie was queer baiting with some generic man becoming the love interest out of no where
Bossco20
I once wrote a 10 page paper and forgot to double space it
Noevilgifs
Ive made 15 page lab reports a day before they were due without ai
Rufferstuff
I wrote a report on "Romeo and Juliet" by reading the back of an album cover from a performance and got the best grade that day.
SarcasticComment
Ai is garbage at writing essays and the worst part is that students don't edit them to make the paragraphs sound human
SansAandAnguS
It absolutely is!! If you actually read the AI text, it's long, grammatically nonsensical and really verbose - like it's trying to sound smart but it doesn't actually make any sense! Also, it doesn't flow right and often gets things mixed up or out of order. Truly, the amount of time needed to edit and rewrite sections is more trouble than it's worth! I don't know why anyone bothers with it?!
SarcasticComment
It reminds me of gradschool writing. 2 paragraphs to say something basic because everyone gets off on throwing around vocabulary
SansAandAnguS
Yes, you're spot on!
PorneliusHubertII
I find it crazy that they are prompting, printing, and turning in without reading. If it were me, id prompt, read, revise in my own words, then turn in.
lozeldatkm
editing that garbage would be more work than just writing it. I hear programmers spend more time fixing bugs in code AI gave them than they'd spend just coding (or googling) it themselves.
Z0op
Heh theres a few ai skills lile unslop, ai instructions to remove the ai junk, most people just grab whatever the bot says directly, but a few layers of those on top, and it reads a whole lot less than machine. Doesnt improve any of its quality ofcourse, garbage in > garbage out, and these fixer skills are just regurgitating ai generated content a few times.
And all that is pretty easy to do too, so getting an obviously chatgpt summary is just lazy
KWJester49
Dunno what the other guys on, or maybe just different culture where he works. Hated the guys that would vibe code for my stuff, they would take forever and eventually bring it to me and then they'd usually be so behind I would just show them what (if any) lines they should have looked at as a starting point, then what it actually needed to be to work. Majority of the time the vibe coders would be less efficient than not even having someone in their role
Z0op
Vibe coding _can_ be done right, but it requires someone who can actually code to ask the bot the right things. Problem is, most vibe coders cant code for shit, and rely fully on the ai to do everything. So the simplest little fixes take ages as they struggle the ai what to do (while just a handedit would have been seconds of work).
Its like when photoshop first became popular, every idiot that could pirate it would call themselves a designer.
Same thing, any idiot can tell an ai to build apps
hsalonen3000
You heard wrong. Nobody fixes AI code by hand. I have seen a guy just typing "fix this" three times at AI prompt. I have vibe coded one app, AI got stuff wrong at first iteration and I discovered that vibe coding is just chatting with AI about the code, until it comes out "good enough".
ParaBellumOutfitters
Pulled an all-nighter to write 5 pages on Native Son when there was basically nothing online about it (eons ago). Basically had to do it off of the blurb you'd read on the back cover of different editions. Was still one of only two people in the freshman college class who didn't plagarize. Got an A-
BitRoyal
Applying for a promotion at work, and I have to write a cover letter. Co-worker recommended I just use ai to do it. Instantly shot them down. "Not only would it be dishonest to submit something i didn't write myself, but if I'm not willing to spend 30 minutes writing a cover letter do I really deserve the promotion?"
Kazpur81S
After a PhD, I hear writing a 15-pager is trite
SpaceMarineWithAnUrgeToPurge
I once helped my brother do a six week science experiment in five minutes, he got an A.
LurkingSarcasm
It was having to cite sources in a properly formatted bibliography that was the bitch
ScrippyChan
Absolutely asinine how nitpicky everyone is about that shit.
EstoyPoopis
It's school. They're teaching you how to properly do it for when it matters. It may only matter for 1 of 2 people in your class, but those are the ones that will advance society the most while the rest of us look at memes while we poop.
hsalonen3000
Have you heard about our lord and saviour LaTeX?
dracklen
Formatting mathematical notation in LaTeX made me want to cry. Not sure how much of a savior it was 😅
Cookiesnm1lk
"WiKiPeDiA iSn't A vAlId SoUrCe BeCaUsE aNyBoDy CaN cHaNgE iT" MY TEACHER IN SHIT, that. is. what. the. ENTIRE. internet is. but ofc.... using wikipedia to *find* relevant articles is fine tho. make that make sense.
whereismymind86
That’s why I just made them up, I knew I wasn’t plagiarizing, I’d just list broad sources about the topic and call it good.
theSoulciologist
Remember when online articles weren't accepted? Spoiler alert: even today, teachers don't check citations.
brownribbon
I had a teacher in HS in 2001 check citations
LurkingSarcasm
Maybe they don't, but they always checked it was formatted correctly
chrstphrsh
I had a history professor whose tests were always essay questions, to be written in class in blue books, and he expected at least 10 pages.
QuartzPoker
I wrote a four page paper with hand-crafted illustrations in six hours one day and got a A. You don't need AI.
hsalonen3000
I once took a week off work, wrote 16-20 pages of my Master's thesis. I had to convince my thesis supervisor, I wasn't doing plagiarism and I actually read all the new references.
theSpinnerBoy
I would allow an hour per page. If a 5 page paper was due at 2 pm, I would start writing it at 9 am.
TheSecondPiewackit
Homie... I wrote OTHER peoples' essays, in classes I wasn't even taking, for money. And then I uploaded them to websites for everyone.
TheSecondPiewackit
I never spent more than an hour on each one. $20 an hour in the early aughts was my fuckin bread and butter.
GreatOdinsTaint
In a cave! With a box of scraps!
Shaddak
I wrote 10-page papers the night before they were due.
wejustdontknow
Or the morning they were due sometimes.
djguydan
Game respects game.
dripstone
Single spaced with 10 point font.
CallMeCourierSix
I wrote a 40 page essay on life in New York City prior to indoor plumbing and sewers. In sixth grade.
TheMindEntropic
Uphill both ways through the snow?
CallMeCourierSix
Nah. I'm just autistic and thought it was an interesting subject.
E12IK
My proudest academic writing achievement was when I realized I was too sleepy to write the night before my deadline and resolved to get up early and write it in the morning. And I basically composed it as I drifted off to sleep. I somehow remembered the paper that I had dreamt and banged out a 5 pager in the morning for an A- from a tough grading prof. A feat I don’t ever expect to repeat. (not just cuz I’m decades past school papers)

sjs9702
Did the same thing with my AP English final paper senior year of high school. Was supposed to read Huck Fin. Got to page 6. Nope. Research the symbolism. Write the paper. 93%. Fabulous.
tareatingrat
Up hill. And in the snow, too. And the PC never loaded the letter.
zeacorzeppelin10
Me too, I wrote my art history paper the night before it was due. Emailed it to myself. Got up early. Went to the library on campus, proofread it. Printed it out and handed it in, got an A. Wouldn't repeat it.
figuringeights
Until every time I had a paper due after that..
Buffoonery
Did the final draft just before breakfast.

That gave me flashbacks, why you had to say that...
DWandRFaremyspiritbeings
We would write 3-5 page papers in the class before the class in which they were due.
Yoshimaster
Same. Stayed up all night to first read 60 pages of 500 and then write my 10 page final paper by 9 am for an anthro class. Oh and this was when we had to physically turn in our shit too, no online submission, so I had run my ass to campus to turn it in on time. Got an A-.
TheMindEntropic
Same. Had a month to do it. Started on it night before. B grade (and much anxiety).
Zetor
Those were the the days my friend.
CallMeMcGyver
I was "AI" before AI existed... In the 80s I made a couple of bucks here and there writing other people's papers... I barely understood some of the subjects, used whatever abridged information I could get ahold of and hoped it all flew... as far as I remember, nobody ever had a problem and all got passing marks... bee bop bloo blop... even robots need to eat.
DarkSock
As a recently graduated architect intern in the late 80s, I made side cash doing presentation renderings of other architects buildings, some of which were competitors to the firm I worked at… I would ink over a quick penciled-in two point perspective, hit it with colored pencils, and cash that $500 check - which was a lot back then.
Nowadays, our Interns crank out 3D computer animations… They are so realistic, clients sometimes think we are showing them video footage of existing buildings.
Nanntuckett
Same. It’s crazy looking back at it and thinking we actually did it.
whereismymind86
It was pretty easy if I’m honest
Shaddak
That's when neurodivergent hyperfocus comes in handy!
whereismymind86
Very much so
OmenJones
What kind of animal wrote essays in pen?
Alistairetheblu
Animals that didn't have their 1st word processor yet. I had a typewriter at the time but man, so much easier when word processors came out.
NeverDownvoteMelBrooks
Some of us were in school before computers were standard household items.
eadanke
It was faster than waiting in line for the one printer or waiting for open time in the computer lab. It's just 5 pages.
thedudeman519
Me!
FoxPesdassi
This kind, for one.
pyroshen
Old ones
alt86er
Not exactly essays, but from the length of it, they could just as easily have been: Lab reports for practical courses. Some had 20 pages and more. You would have been busy for quite a while even if only copying them from another student. Not counting the analysis of the measurements taken or re-checking if the theory part of your buddy was sound. And they seriously looked you in the eye, saying they expect 12 of those monsters in 8 weeks while having 3 other courses in parallel. Those fuckers!
HandsomePenguin
I once had a teacher erase my entire essay in front of me because I used pencil on an essay. "This is why you HAVE to use pen"
reichstein
Then I did it again, but in pen, and the teacher set the essay on fire. "This is why you HAVE to use asbestos based paper"
HandsomePenguin
Yes I know it sounds far fetched. But its how it happened. Luckily she let me keep the paper and I was able to re write a lot of if, because even the best pink eraser can only remove so much.
iamlegendinjapan
Final drafts used to have to be written in pen.
ILoveThiPlatform
I remember typing my handwritten essays out on a 45lb electric typewriter.
OmenJones
I was in school in the 80s and 90s and never had that. Damn, that sucks.
iamlegendinjapan
I had some in the 2000s. Yeah they sucked. It really depended on the teacher
caledric
I was in school in the 80s and 90s, and all my classes required it.
Jimmah1
90s and 2000s. Same. And quality of penmanship needed to be up to par or you just failed it.
