That generally is the corporate ladder for criminal law attorneys, with the possible offshoot of private criminal defense. I started PD, went pros, went private defense, went back to pros (where I am at now). Prosecutors do make more than PDs. Private defense salary really depends on how good ya are. I'm *really* good (if I do say so myself), so I can make a lot more over there, so I'm just spinning my wheels waiting for a good position to open up.
