I'm an Apple repair technician. Bless this man and his goals.
dmbelafan
I've been repairing their products for eight years, the last several on their payroll. It's been nonstop downhill from day one.
spacepinata
No one's mentioned iFixit? They're a big supporter of Right To Repair http://ifixit.org/right
forteller
And they make detailed guides for fixing Apple and other products. I first thought this post was about them.
spacepinata
Me too - but before he mentioned his own company, I was confused that I didn't recognize him (I know most of the staff at HQ)
SirAndrewMaxwellDwyer
This guy is a hero.
ilikewobbleboards
How do you like them apples, Apple?
HookerinaHandbasket
In the last gif You can see him look to the left as Apple thugs break into his hideout
CleverUsernameThatAppliesToTheAboveImage
Aside from the last gif and its bird flipping, approximately zero of these images needed to be gifs.
nefelibatacomingthrough
Stupid waste to throw away just a little bit or non broken phones and pads. Just stupid waste. Kudos to the man and to other fixers!
enartloc
it's not as simple as that, but lots of people on reddit and imgur are ignorant, so it's pretty pointless to argue 1/?
enartloc
when one of these big companies repairs something, they ofc replace the whole board the broken component, for two reasons, 1- time, 2/?
enartloc
2 - they need to make sure the repair lasts and can have a warranty on it, if you replace a single component that product might become 3/?
enartloc
faulty again. You can blame companies like Apple for proprietary screws and keeping info away from users, but not for the repair methods
nefelibatacomingthrough
You have a point there but if the manufacturers make it difficult to repair them imo they are doing it wrong.. environment way.
daguq
For us it's a waste - for Apple and all the others it's business.
nefelibatacomingthrough
Yeah. I just wish that they would realise we all have to live in the same more and more polluted world.
daguq
They do realise, they just don't give a flying fuck! ... #consumerismsucks
terribletech
Tim Cook can't hear you on his Everest sized mountain of cash.
FromDenmarkWithHate
And that makes it perfectly ok to make bullshit products! Aaahhh... The American dream!
notabrainlet
Lel Also I don't know how many people take thier broken macs to a person who does component level repair. But Louis makes bank so idk.
MoveAlongNothingtoSeeHere
If enough people stop buying new macs or paying exhorbitant mac store prices for repairs, he'll hear it loud and clear
lickwidghost
unfortunately, people are fucking idiots

lobstasalad9095
you mean starting his own business?!
NationalistCanadianMooseWarrior
1) he can do both, believe it or not good businesses do exist where everyone wins, 2) that's irrelevant because these tutorials are free.
lobstasalad9095
Maybe he is a disgruntled ex-employee. Maybe he had a nasty breakup. I just think there is some healthy competition he could provide.
philosophical1
My iPhone had a problem, they just gave me a new one from their store. I use apple for their customer service, not just their products.
fartharder
I use Apple products, I buy Apple products, and I work on Apple products. Kudos to this guy and others like him.

I'm pretty sure the EU is coming down hard on this sort of behaviour.
ninjagaidensigma
Let's hope the EU is also coming down hard on this multiculturalist blending of the races and white genocide behaviour.
TheClayKnight
White genocide? Wtf are you on about?
ninjagaidensigma
Maybe "outbreeding" would've made more sense. We are slowly being exterminated from the inside out by the constant influx of immigrants.
AlexDuos
It isn't just Apple. A lot of printer brands will have meaningless, serialized error messages and sixty pages of manual saying "lol call us"

To be fair printers are INSANELY complicated. The amount of moving parts is higher than pretty much any other device
AlexDuos
Moving parts, software, firmware AND network components. They're a nightmare.
aldriel
My dad used to sell and fix printers and copiers, I learned a lot from him.
swolritto
Can I call you next time my printer malfunctions?
sillybananas
Ooooooh so is this why printers ALWAYS have problems?
FernandoRumdebum
Jokey answer: their partners are alcoholic so their home life is a mess. This causes stress which shows up as defects
FernandoRumdebum
(Horrifying answer more like...ergh)
drfsupercenter
Serious answer: yes.

It's not just the IT industry either. The car industry have been doing this for years too.
NationalistCanadianMooseWarrior
Recently learned that grease nipples are becoming less common so the joint just wears out because fuck you.... it's fucked up.
AlexDuos
I bet. Their products are way more expensive and I imagine vastly more complex
grovberg
Practically all electronics are like this. But for some reason only Apple takes heat over it.
Atlasraven
They are a big target because their hardware is more expensive and monopolized.
Verizer
Apple is the most blatant about making their stuff hard to repair. I mean, I can't even pull the back off and replace the battery!
celestedrake
Cars too. We had to buy an error code reader because one of the messages means like 20 different errors.
AlexDuos
Lol wow
phlat6
You mean the one check engine light isn't enough to diagnoses all problems a car might have?
celestedrake
Our car has a digital display to say the 'error'... I forget what it displayed as my memory is crap, but it was similar.
Umbrius
There are other diagnostic tools, both built in and external.
Gamemeister83
As one of the little guys here in the repair industry Thank you. You said what we anted to for a long time.
HandoB4Javert
There is a Right to Repair Bill making its way to US legislation - removing the ability of unapproved repairs. https://youtu.be/4eyidi2HaMY
HandoB4Javert
This guy is behind iFixit and is trying to guarantee everyone has a right to own and repair things.
w4rthog
"This guy." Who Rossman?
LaoTze
No, Santa.
MoriartysTeaGirl
Adam Savage is behind this too, I think it's daft we can't yank it apart and work on it like any other piece of machinery!
Falcrist
You can. The issue is companies are actively trying to make it hard.
hellsan631
It doesn't "remove the ability". If it passed, it would have forced tech companies to release repair schematics making things easier
seanweinstein
As a consumer I'm 100% behind right to repair, in my job as a product developer this is a very tricky subject
MrHotWaffles
Is it a federal or a state bill?
sumothername
State bill. In NY.
MrHotWaffles
can people from other states really affect it? If it passes, will it kinda snowball into the house?
sumothername
I read elsewhere in comments that it died. As a follower of my own state's politics, opinions of non residents has no impact on our govt.
txjd
.
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
Unenforceable. Also, just save your old components/cars. No one will buy new and it will get repealed or selectively enforced.
OSCgal
Your wording is confusing. "Right to Repair" forces companies to give customers (& mechanics) the info needed to repair their own 1/2
OSCgal
cars, and makes it illegal to lock out a car's computer from third-party & aftermarket hardware/software. 2/2
tbnd
Got squashed by New York's legislature yesterday.
LokiKingOfJotunheim
It was only in NY though... It would have to be passed through the House and Senate in DC to apply to all states.
greentie001
.
TexasBaconMan
Never gonna happen...
SMurphey
We don't need laws for this. The company has rights too! Smart consumers, not more laws. I'll never buy an apple because of shit like this.
OSCgal
It was related to cars, and car manufacturers are trying to prevent independent mechanics from doing certain repair work.
justpointingouttheobvious
That argument relies on intelligent and thoughtful consumers. Companies fight this by creating advertising that appeals emotionally.
SMurphey
SMurphey
Are you not intelligent and thoughtful?
justpointingouttheobvious
I am. That's why advertising aims to circumvent that logic with an emotional response. Look it up. It's why celeb endorsements exist.
ShockTheBrine
It died. The NY state legislature killed it. : (
ImUgly
Apparently Apple had lobbied to kill the bills

ReiiamaKotsu
It got shut down about 2-3 days ago. Sorry :(
RuneKatashima
Why so many people with sadfaces? Isn't it good it got shut down?
BlastFX
Poor wording on OP's part. It was about forcing manufacturers to sell spare parts and release datasheets, manuals and diagnostic tools.
Alphonsevaher
A bill Called 'Right to Repair', Pretty sure it was establishing peoples right to be able to repair software on something they own.
Jeslis
Commenter above you worded his reply wrong. We WANTED this bill to go through to allow us the right to repair our own technology.
RuneKatashima
Oh okay. That makes more sense.
paps511
If congress couldn't agree terrorist watch list people should not be able to buy a gun, what makes you think this will pass?
TheClayKnight
The terrorist watch list isn't a good system to begin with. It's being labeled a criminal without any due process. So it's not simple.
streptovsky
Unrelated, but the terrorist watch list has a 40% inaccuracy record. NOT something to base civil rights on.
philcollinsdrumbreakdown
Exactly
javatech
The problem lies in the fact people are guaranteed the right to due process and the fear that the government might abuse denials.
javatech
I understand both sides of the arguments of this complex issue and have not formed any opinions on the subject myself.
Radix865
Because they're getting paid to pass this?
Woodcastle
shhhhh he still believes in the system. let his hope live just a little longer.
Treblaine
Gonna be hard to enforce, the law would have to distinguish between something being made arbitrarily unfixable and truly disposable.
Professorsmartbrain
Maybe it will be enforced like false advertisement. You just need another company or entity to take the offending company to civil court.
notme222
We don't enforce laws here. We just pass stuff with good names so we can campaign about how much we care.
OtterlyMagnificent
Besides, it would probably wind up being like the 'We can't fix it if you void the warranty' thing. Which is why I void the warranty in 1/
OtterlyMagnificent
the store, where they can see that I don't actually need them to fix it for me.
WilfredPGrundlesnatch
It's more about making manufacturers release the technical manuals, schematics and diagnostic tools, which is easily enforced.
CorwinMacGregor
I can see the companies (legitimately) crying foul over being forced to release proprietary intellectual property.
WilfredPGrundlesnatch
There's nothing in a schematic that you can't get from looking at the board itself. The schematic just makes it much quicker.
CorwinMacGregor
unless it is a PCB with internal traces and heavy top and bottom grounding planes. Then it is the devil trying to figure out what connects
mohammadbinsalmon
they can fuck off to another country then
MWisBest
Information for repairs isn't exactly "proprietary intellectual property".

The best part was those PSUs used standard ATX connectors, just with a different pinout. So replacing one with non-Dell was guaranteed death
ninjagaidensigma
Fucking assholes.
TK421isAFK
We fried my uncle's Dell like that. A pin removal tool will help you in switching the pins on the connector, but it's a pain in the ass.

Some HPs with Delta PSUs are similar.

as an IT professional, Macs are absolutely the worst for diagnosing and repairing.
dabomber60
As someone who worked in a apple authorised repair shop, I disagree, the diagnostic tools are amazing
BruhahGand
Applecare certified. Anything more complex than a keyboard swap, I take it to the Apple store. Let them deal with gluing the screen back on.
spookyactionatadistance
Ya but hardware repair is fucking easy. Try sourcing a power jack for an Acer 15w34 xx.2. Try changing a display on a HTC one.
NotAgainRichard
And this was people voting with their money. Instead of expansible MacBook Pros they bought more Macbook Airs, and Apple responded.
NotAgainRichard
by building more macbook airs and unrepairable unexpansible items. The consumer base shaped their product line. Its not all their fault.
OverpricedCrayon
Good thing this guy made a bunch of free videos for you
moxiefoxxy
Most IT professionals are trained on PC's so of course they don't like Mac's. I'm a designer using both mac & PC, macs have 80% less issues.
levish
Sony laptops weren't any good either, had a terrible time tracking down service manuals.
AliBarber
I used to sell laptops and the girls always wanted vaios. Had to be careful explaining why they're so shit but it didn't always work
drfsupercenter
I'm inclined to agree, but my sister's Dell Inspiron was awful, you literally had to dismantle the motherboard to swap a hard drive
RobBobertyYT
In my experience as a former IT professional, it's either really easy to fix or I'm gonna send them to apple.
Vagabnd
Not hard at all. A fucking piece of cake to deal with.
Axlegear

On top of that, Macs are just terrible. Big Macs on the other hand...
OverlySuaveITGuy

My fiance's an IT guy and absolutely hates working on Mac's.
PolaroidPuffin
We all do. Apple prefers it that way.

You know, Macs used to be known as the best engineered, most eminently upgradable systems. Now they're completely disposable.

As an IT engineer, bad apples just ended up in the trash can...
Bootsy81
Good thing "it just works" then, right? *cough*bullshit*cough*

Macs are not professional devices. No enterprise would tolerate that BS.

ninjagaidensigma
Well, this IS Apple we're talking about ;-)
CityYeti
As another IT professional, Macs are absolutely the worst in general
HelloThisIsIT
Not to mention connecting to the rest of the network and compatibility
CondescendingCunt
You could have just stopped after "worst", you know...
OctopusOccult
I can vouch as a person who owns a computer, macs are the worst.
Oregonian
I'm all my friends go-to guy for computer repairs. I tell all my Apple friends I wont try to fix their mistakes.

As a tech, I find them easier; the hardware and software is consistent so after a while you start to see patterns of failure
Urgalicity
If you buy an Apple brand anything, I automatically think you're dumb
stilloldbull
You think that is just an accident...or a feature?
foxfire1112
"as an IT professional", the most ambiguous statement of the 21st century
DarthWikki
So if I worked in a computer shop and build PC's and offer IT help to family and friends that makes me a professional right? Also Mac sux.
Ilikestyx
a portion of my job is building custom servers and workstations. Macs are forced upon our admin, at a university which primarily uses MSFT
Hendlton
Well, an IT professional technically means they get paid to do anything IT related, doesn't necessarily mean they're good at it.
Acampkin
This, And then you take it into Apple and they have all this fancy software, GIVE IT TO ME
Limitfromspace

DM? What's dungeon Master have to do with this? :D

NoobGoldberg
Well we have certified apple service. Isn't that bad.

Told my sister I would fix her PC if it broke. Then she bought a Macbook. Nope. Have fun handing all your money to Apple when it breaks.
squallau
That's fine, she can take it to an Apple store and not be judged and condescended by you.
Panzersmash
Being judged and condescended are appropriate when you buy something for the name and not the quality and values of the manufacturer.
squallau
How do you know what her reasons were? Most people I know that've chosen Apple have done so because specifically for the after-sales support
squallau
Besides, if I had a brother with an attitude like that, I'd probably rather hand money to Apple than deal with his ego.
PolaroidPuffin
Actually me and my sister are pretty much best friends. And it's quite obvious you don't know us.
LittleLissa
just saying my mac is over 6 years old and upgrades have cost less than $200...
MWisBest
My PC laptop is 5 years old and I haven't dropped a dime into it. Overclocked like a mofo and still chugs along no problem.
Panzersmash
But you paid up to twice as much as the original cost of the hardware because of brand name. Not really worth it even if you only spent 200.
robothobo
As a former Apple tech, the most important part of taking a tech support call is that we sell you something. Fixing the issue is a bonus.
guilhermedidi
you should do a 'stories from an apple tech' post. i'd read the shit out of that.
StandAgainstTyranny
Seriously, do they imply this in training?
freakybender
Honestly no, the most important part of training, at least when I went through it, was making sure we resolve the issue.
StandAgainstTyranny
Cool. I was hoping it wasnt as bad as that sounded, with the 'sales over service' thing.
BrentCRX
I am a expert and former FRS at Apple Retail. They coach education opportunities over sales. Repairs cost if we replace hardware on 90%
freakybender
I'm curious what facet of Apple you worked for. I work for Applecare and the only thing I can sell would be AC or AC+, and it's not a metric
RyanRawrble
Yeah, I did some Applecare. And literally the only things that really mattered were CSATS (Fuck those. Fuck them hard.) and handle time.
robothobo
I worked for Applecare around 2006, and was basically driven out for not meeting sales quotas. Maybe they've changed that now.
carlrove46
You go robothobo!

That's a typical joke from windows users about how mac users are not tech savvy, even though most programmers use macs. Come at me downvotes
HordeKnight
Just from personal experience, all the people I know who use windows are complete tech idiots. Go on, continue to make uneducated jokes.
IHaveThePerfectPuzzleForYou
Our IT dept. exclusively uses Windows. Our graphics designers use Mac.

People are idiots. No surprise here.
SirAndrewMaxwellDwyer
Not if you take the Genius Bar approach and blame 75% of things on a bad logic board.
battletoads
Now that almost everything is integrated into the logic board it may be more accurate.
AGrammeIsBetterThanADamn
Well when EVERY COMPONENT OF THE DEVICE is mounted on the logic board! (back in the day, we called that a motherboard but it doesn't mother)
Falos
If the solve is "replace logic board" it's not a repair, you're just using a new computer. There has to be SOME isolation to say "repair".

Do you happen to work gatech or Emory?
Ilikestyx
University of Waterloo
theindi
We also had apple certified techs, they would always have the same response. We will have to send this in. For every single problem.
Ilikestyx
These guys have access to AHT and they'll order in parts + do the labour but replacement parts are almost not worth it.
HeWentToJaredButNotJaredFromSubwayCuzHeDidBadStuffImJared
I can vouch for this. Even specialized screws and screwdrivers need to be used in most cases.
TheMexicanStaringFrog0fSouthernSriLanka
"Used in most cases" niceeee
helpusdrzaius
Not to mention really fucking fragile soft plastic connectors.
LeakyTaps
don't forget the awesome imacs with the unshielded power supplies just behind the screen.
BirthdayMassacre
I repair computers. All cases. All off Apple's cases need special screwdrivers.
SilasGrossberndt
And the old MacBook g4. Hah many a time I cut myself on the HD sheet metal just one layer down from the plastic shell. God damn it apple
Ilikestyx
I got a nice set from iFixit, it's done me well so far working on these things.
btimup
Truth. I bought a special toolkit just to open my gf's macbook and clean her fans & change the thermal paste
RobertPenman
I think its time everyone refuses apple products when they stop you from being able to clean your own laptop everyone just needs to 1/2
RobertPenman
2/2 just say fuck you were not endorsing you. I think the best part is that apple products are far worse and far less reliable anyway.
btimup
I actually find them to be such reliable workhorses build wise, but yeah I can't support such a selfish company
Ilikestyx
You should see some Windows laptops though... but I do enjoy a challenge when I have to take the whole thing apart just to fix a clogged fan
TheDudePlayingaDudeDisguisedAsAnotherDude
but Apple's marketing is the absolute best and this alone places them at the "most valuable company" spot
ecodude
I can't remember what the website is called, but there's a site that gives away free apple screwdrivers for iPhone and Macs
kriskat144
.
doritobandito84
Yep
Kj991
They are just torque screws. They sell them at every hardware store almost always are t8 and t6
Stravitch
Don't forget their triwing screws if you're still rocking the slightly older MacBook pros and have to change a battery.
Treeboo
.
ecodude
Not quite. They're called "pentalobe" screws and aren't exact measurements on most models. Only apple products or really good knockoffs work
Kj991
They are Torques. I've taken apart my fair share of MacBooks and power macs and iPhones.
BoltActionGearbox
on some of the older ones maybe, but the current ones are a 5 bladed variant called pentalobe. They're obnoxiously hard to find.
LvAllen

As an IT professional, whenever anybody mentions something Mac: lol, no, bye-bye now.
MiaTheScienceLady
What a meme, there's nothing wrong with mac as an OS, it's helpful because it's so simple so that the tech illiterate can use them with 1/2
MiaTheScienceLady
a form of ease, I personally ensure my elderly family use apple phones (which I find reliable and sturdy) they are easy for me to 2/3
MiaTheScienceLady
problem solve and fix most of the time. It all comes down to preference at the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with Mac. 3/4
MiaTheScienceLady
It's just the way Apple works that is a negative.
Ilikestyx
my boss hates Windows (hasn't used it in over a decade so doesn't know what he's talking about) and jizzes his pants over anything Mac
abrakadumbass
yep. pay me enough money, ill take a look but no guarantees.
AWildImgination
I don't know much about computers, but I'm trying to learn. What about Macs makes them so difficult to work on/fix? Feel free to reply or DM
dashers
Using is OK. But the software is deliberately difficult to diagnose unless you're Apple. It's considered a very closed system.
Shardikprime
Fucking Ionic
CaffeineManic
Not a pro, but I do casual IT support for family & friends as long as it's PC or Android. As soon as they buy Mac or iPhone it's sayonara.
FarmerHE
I mad3 a simple rule for my family.. I'm happy to help with any and all problems on windows/android. Any other OS and they should ask google
cazzegiare
i offer casual support for my family for whatever they use. why is it so hard?
NekoMiko06
Because apple wants yoou to buy a new one as soon as something breaks.
mimomisu
Not just that...but they make it hard to repair and easily to break while attempting to repair
cazzegiare
if you don't want to pay for apple support, take it a repair shop that specializes in apple products. these exist and are not expensive.
Sicarius23
As an IT professional that actually works in a Mac and Windows environment, they really aren't that difficult.
Wixely
Louis is mostly talking about component level board repair, not software.
thedjmattyt
I 100% agree. I've been fixing and repairing Macs since the late 90s. Not that difficult. (I work with both PC & Macs now, both are easy)
wolfghost666
Exactly. Thank you.
Ilikestyx
Yeah because when they do break there's two options. Recover from a backup or replace it.
Sicarius23
You could always fix it yourself if you wanted to become a certified tech. You know, expanding your abilities as a technician.
trippydave
Can you help me with this one problem on my mac? Google isn't helping me much
Sicarius23
People never want to learn, they just want to complain about Apple because that's the thing to do.
kgarthai
Yeah Apple provides detailed tool & part lists, instructions, and easy access to buy replacement parts if you're certified. It's really easy
thatguywiththename
Right so I'm assuming you pay to take a course or something of the like to be "certified" to work on apple products...or just use a real 1/2
LittleLissa
I fixed my macbook from 2010 easily last year & did some upgrades. It's still running strong. I don't get the hate, but to each their own.
Ilikestyx
lol I don't need to be a certified tech to work on them. In fact I just re-applied thermal paste on a MBP 13" the other day.
Roushfan5
So are they unrepairable or not? Pick a narrative.
blacklabel86
whoaa thermal paste lol. we got a bad ass over here

So, don't buy bullshit

Great answer!
crazycatmister
That's a firmware problem
HandoB4Javert
I remember when the Pro part meant professional = repairable. Glue is not a valid substitute even if it saves weight.
dmbelafan
As a PSP tech, top case replacement to resolve a battery issue is easily one of my least favorite things to explain to a customer.
Burritotacotime
How do you feel about duck tape? Chicken wire?

I was always told "If it has glue in it, that's a PROtotype."
SalsaBeard
So Apple would rather you just buy a new one and you are upset about it. Why do you keep buying it? Because you want it. So fuck it.
GhostGuy
Maybe they want the sleek designs and idiot-proof OS, but they also want to be able to repair it. Pretty reasonable desires.
SalsaBeard
Well there is a very strong reason why they don't make their repair guides readily available. People already try DIY repair and mess it up.
GhostGuy
So put a disclaimer on it that "Attempting to repair or modify your device will void your warranty", just like almost every other device.
SalsaBeard
Then they bring it to Apple and demand a "warranty" replacement for the whole thing after they've bricked it themselves. Sad but true.

This guy is a great talker. I watched his videos about re-flowing GPU's and how its total shit. lol
gaenaralhonk
I did that to fix a broken GPU, kept working for about a year afterwards. PC didn't even launch before that.
TheHappyHermit
is he Vin Diesel's brother?

I'm not good with names either! Awesome, I'll check him out. I wanted to subscribe for the same reason. Thanks!
Falcrist
His point was the problem is internal heat damage rather than busted solder joints, and you can temporarily fix it without an actual reflow.
SchizophrenicEuphoria
He was also featured on Linus's channel
Virtika
Interesting & good watch, that one. +1 for Linus actually taking the time to visit and talk to someone who basically shit on his video.

DavidBrooker
I fixed my truck's ABS controller re-flowing solder, but that's a 15-y/o board in a high-vibration environment with poor ingress protection.
DavidBrooker
But I also first checked that the joints were actually cracked (both visually and with a meter), and that I'd still get my core deposit...
Falcrist
That's an instance when reflowing actually works as advertised. His point was that GPU's don't have issues with their solder joints… 1/2
Falcrist
2/2 so reflowing them isn't necessary to fix the issue.
Whitefox789
Cracked? Is this ceramic based solder?
DavidBrooker
I'm not an electric expert. Cracks in at very high vibration cycles at elevated temperatures didn't come as much surprise. Should it have?
funkrebel
I did it on my gtx470 6 moths ago, solved the artifacts problem, still working to this day pic:
funkrebel
Pic right before it went into the oven
linkinstreet
No wonder it's broken. It's all blurry before you reflow it
Jokesterwild
470! I would of thought it would be reflow in itself on a daily basis ha!
funkrebel
I have an SLI of those, havent had to start the heater last 4 winters.
Jokesterwild
I remember I had one, I put a full cover block on it asap. btw want a full cover block? ha
wrincewind
We reflow ICs on iPhones all the time at work, it's a common part of repair after drop damage.
Wonderdog
I got an extra year out of a failing video card by doing that, maybe I was a lucky one but it absolutely did work.
TK421isAFK
I repaired my Dell XPS laptop video card this way, but I was thorough. Made my own liquid flux, and it worked.
Tastefull1
dell xps15? I've got one sitting here, it bluescreens playing games. Its not an overheating problem as it also bluescreens pretty much 1/?
Tastefull1
straight after booting off the SSD and starting a game while being cold still.
TK421isAFK
Dell XPS M1730. That sounds like the same symptoms I had. TBH, it's been 2 years since I fixed it, and it's since failed again. I might 1/2
TK421isAFK
pick up a replacement video card on eBay, eventually. This shows you how to reflow the card: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dOJDRTXaQw 2/2
bitemark
Why does he say it's shit? I've "baked" a non-working laptop into a working one (been fine for 2 years now).
Falcrist
He says the solder joints aren't the issue, and you don't have to get up to reflow temperatures (as high as 450ºF) to fix it.
MostlyJeffGoldblum
B/c reflowing fixes the problem but it doesn't stop it from happening again. Using higher quality solder and fixing cooling issues does.
Cere4l
this is why most of us reflow AND tell the customer to not leave their laptop on ingame in their backpack in a car in the sun.
dwilson0725
Reflow and increased cooling has fixed a lot of boards. Just doing a reflow obviously doesn't fix the original issue. Do ppl think that?
Falcrist
People think the solder joints are compromised. Rossman is saying that internal overheating damage rather than solder joints are the issue.
MostlyJeffGoldblum
"fix" is kind of relative. Reflowing Xbox 360's for example might make it last as long as it should have in the first place.
dwilson0725
In my experience just reflowing a 360 resulted in a short lifespan without increased cooling and/or board stiffening.
Malkhuth
Reflowing? The fuck is that?
Kenblu24
Solder is like metal hot glue, but conductive. We use it to "glue" components in place. If the connection breaks, re-heat the joint.
stalinskayak
You bake the part so any broken solder joints (basically conductive glue) melt and reconnect.
hmzzz
Its only for macs. Definitely works
0ByteMe1
No it works for pc too. Just doesn't last a long time before the gpu shits itself again.
Lenthas
To the people saying it doesn't work: you're right and semi-wrong. it "fixes" the issue its 100% certain to only last a little longer.
thisusernameismeaningless
Except that's because they use an oven that doesn't even go as high as you need to melt the joints. There's a reason why reflow ovens are $$
BlastFX
Except following the online tutorials you don't get anywhere neat the melting temperature of solder. This method (temporarily) fixes 1/2
BlastFX
bad connections inside the chip itself, not broken solder joints. 2/2
ProbablyDrunkAgain
That only works if a cold/broken solder joint is the problem, AND you get a solid connection with the reflow.
Hulkhulkthehulkinghulk
Much better to open the shit up and reflow each joint with a soddering iron in my experience
MoriartysTeaGirl
Exactly, did this for my own 360 and all my friends. Sometimes having dainty fingers is a good thing! Helps if Microsoft used proper solder!
karmaslap
Also helps if microsoft didn't ban you from live for getting caught doing this or installing crucial extra fans
sinbios
You can't get at the pins for some types of packages like BGA. And it's much easier to screw up and bridge pins with a soldering iron.
Hulkhulkthehulkinghulk
*soldering
Davidnfilms
Tried this with a PS3 Board... didn't fucking work.
icantgotoprisonroytheyllrapetheflipoutofme
I have a BGA workstation and used to reflow/reball 360 and PS3 chips. There's a science to it.
RemoSiracha
I baked my phat PS3 in the oven once. Broke the beep speaker when you turn it on. But it's still kicking. It works. It's just temporary.
ThisIsJustMySecondNSFWAccountMoveAlongOrPMmeIDontCare
Yeah, I've done it 4 times and the amount of time before breaking is shorter each time. Do it and back your shit up.
botwes
Worked several times for me, just gotta get lucky I guess
noobsquad
Same :) felt so much like I was an expert
CaptainLegot
Reflowing bga components isn't easy to do.
crann
not at all
Zoddom
thats why rossmann said its bs and doesnt work that way ;)
OfficerWinstonBishopTheCarportHero
It works, just doesn't last that long. I did it with a hair dryer once. Lasted 3 months so I got a heat gun. Much better.
darksamus8
Tossing the broken components inside an oven in an attempt to allow the solder flow and connect any broken connections. Last ditch effort.
thisusernameismeaningless
But a regular house oven won't melt any solder, lead-free(which it is) or not(lower melting temp, still not hot enough).
Woofbloodywoof
Ah the days of making 360's overheat themselves to do this by sticking wet towels over them, Good god my friends where stupid.
Bamophet
The ring of death!
DefinitelyProbablyPooping
Except it actually worked temporarily or even for a long enough period of time to get a new one
Gherkincensed
Yea saw this work several times with a 360
Woofbloodywoof
Oh yeah, but not when you burn the carpet it's not good.
KingsAndQueens
I'm not sure the towels were supposed to be wet were they?
Sirrussel5
Right? I fixed my red ring with towels, but I feel a wet towel would just break it more.
