Grew up in the Ozarks. One year an ice storm hit out of nowhere. Generators were suddenly double price. But it kept us warm enough until power was restored (3 weeks later).

Reporting on this hasn't even left the local media. We're on our own, we've always been on our own. I wish the floods had taken me, too, but unfortunately all it did was renew the water damage.

I believe his goal is simple. Its not about cruelty, thats a perk for him, its about "how can I make money from this". Its simple, dismantle FEMA, slash their budget, contract it out to private companies, to which somehow his "blind trust" will invest in before he makes an announcement, causing their stocks to go up, at which point he sells and makes more money. Its always been about enriching himself, the cruelty is a side benefit, especially if its to his perceived enemies.

The linemen have been hauling to get things back and running as quickly as they can. This could have been less harsh if NIPSCO would do their jobs and prune foliage back. Seriously, having to chuck out everything in the fridge sucks. There's a lot of animals lost and being dumped because of the storm too.

No FEMA that we've heard of. Grocery stores only gave discounts on freezer items. We had to go to Michigan City for gas. Ice was in insane demand. Our family was out of power from Tuesday to Sunday. It kept flickering all of Monday. I will never take a hot shower for granted ever again.

OK as an Emergency Manager: FEMA has been devastated by Trump and I worry about their capabilities but
1. FEMA very rarely hands out water or food. They are significantly more likely just to give disaster survivors money so they can buy food and water and thus pay sales tax to fund local govt, and to keep local stores that employ local residents busy.
2. Power restoration takes time and power lines are generally owned by private companies. FEMA nor state or local govt can fix your power.

Gary is in district 1, which is essentially Chicago suburbia. We're true-blue here.
I'm in nearby Hammond, and was without power for four days - almost four and a half; it was roughly 105 hours. A few hundred in Hammond are still without; a few thousand in Gary. 41k overall in the service area.
NIPSCO's been working as much as they've been able, but the damage is so extensive BECAUSE of a policy change a couple years back, when they stopped trimming trees near power lines. So I've all respect

The storm on the 11th was a doozy of a derecho, and follow-up storms on two of the next three days added more outage as they damaged anything left standing (but weakened) by the derecho. That power was going to go out all over was a certainty. But, recovering it should NOT have taken this long.
But, you know,... trimming trees costs extra money. Can't have THAT, can we?

Food & water are being distributed right now. In Gary, local shelters are open. PR is using National Guard water trucks. Hawaii also has active emergency shelters. These are managed locally, which is the standard US emergency process.
